Structure and Meaning in Lamentations Homer Heater, Jr. Professor of Bible Exposition Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas Lamentations is perhaps the best example in the Bible of a com bination of divine inspiration and human artistic ability. The depth of pathos as the writer probed the suffering of Zion and his own suf fering is unprecedented. Each chapter is an entity in itself, a com plete poem.1 The most obvious literary device utilized by the poet is the acrostic; that is, poems are built around the letters of the alpha bet. -

The sofit letters sound the same as the normal letters, but are used when they are the last letter in a word. For Bible code purposes. the regular letter and final letter are fully equivalent. In other words, in the code, a nun sofit could appear in the middle of a valid term and the regular letter nun could be at the end of a word. (discussion of numbers on the next page) If the Hebrew letters only go to 400, how can you look for higher number in the Bible code, like the year 1998 (5758)? When you have numbers over 1000, you use the thousands letter as a digit. For example, 1561 would start out with “aleph” which is 1. -

philological encounters � (�0�7) 368-387 brill.com/phen The Semitic Component in Yiddish and its Ideological Role in Yiddish Philology Tal Hever-Chybowski Paris Yiddish Center—Medem Library [email protected] Abstract The article discusses the ideological role played by the Semitic component in Yiddish in four major texts of Yiddish philology from the first half of the 20th century: Ysroel Haim Taviov’s “The Hebrew Elements of the Jargon” (1904); Ber Borochov’s “The Tasks of Yiddish Philology” (1913); Nokhem Shtif’s “The Social Differentiation of Yiddish: Hebrew Elements in the Language” (1929); and Max Weinreich’s “What Would Yiddish Have Been without Hebrew?” (1931). The article explores the ways in which these texts attribute various religious, national, psychological and class values to the Semitic com- ponent in Yiddish, while debating its ontological status and making prescriptive sug- gestions regarding its future. It argues that all four philologists set the Semitic component of Yiddish in service of their own ideological visions of Jewish linguistic, national and ethnic identity (Yiddishism, Hebraism, Soviet Socialism, etc.), thus blur- ring the boundaries between descriptive linguistics and ideologically engaged philology. Psalm 119 & the Hebrew Aleph Bet - Part 14 The fourteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is called “Nun” (pronounced “noon”) and has the sound of “N” as in “now”. It has the numeric value of 50, the number of the Jubilee. There are two ways to write a Nun. A Nun appearing at the end of a word (sofit) looks like a Vav, but is longer, extending below the baseline. A regular Nun looks much like the Kaph, but is half its width. The Nun stands for FISH. In modern Hebrew, the letter Nun can appear in three forms: Writing the Letter: Nun – The Nun is half as wide as the Kaph Nun: Letter of Faithfulness Nun represents both faithfulness and the reward for faithfulness. Moses is seen as the iconic humble servant of Yahweh. The word “Nun” itself is spelled Nun-Vav-(final) Nun and looks as follows: The one who is humble before God will stand upright in the final Day. In the olam hazeh (present life), this means that the tzaddik (righteous man) will simultaneously affirm: “I am nothing but dust.” Humble yourself in the sight of Yahweh, and He shall lift you up (James 4:10). Nun Study Page 1 Spiritual Meaning of the Nun Nun = 50 and means “FISH” of Yahweh or “The SAVED”. Our Messiah could be called “The Chief FISHERMAN.” He told His disciples that He would make them “FISHERS of men”, (Mark 1:17). Like a FLOURISHING, darting school of FISH that continues to propagate, our Saviour’s Love causes us to multiply and grow in numbers as we share Him with others. -

Diacritic-Based Matching of Arabic Words MUSTAFA JARRAR, Birzeit University, Palestine FADI ZARAKET, American University, Lebanon 10 RAMI ASIA and HAMZEH AMAYREH, Birzeit University, Palestine Words in Arabic consist of letters and short vowel symbols called diacritics inscribed atop regular letters. Changing diacritics may change the syntax and semantics of a word; turning it into another. This results in difficulties when comparing words based solely on string matching. Typically, Arabic NLP applications resort to morphological analysis to battle ambiguity originating from this and other challenges. In this article, we introduce three alternative algorithms to compare two words with possibly different diacritics. We propose the Subsume knowledge-based algorithm, the Imply rule-based algorithm, and the Alike machine-learning- based algorithm. We evaluated the soundness, completeness, and accuracy of the algorithms against a large dataset of 86,886 word pairs. Our evaluation shows that the accuracy of Subsume (100%), Imply (99.32%), and Alike (99.53%). Although accurate, Subsume was able to judge only 75% of the data. Both Subsume and Imply are sound, while Alike is not. We demonstrate the utility of the algorithms using a real-life use case – in lemma disambiguation and in linking hundreds of Arabic dictionaries. chapter 16 Lexis The lexis of the Hasidic Hebrew tales reflects the distinctive polyglossic envi- ronment of its authors. Yiddish was their native language and chief vernacular, while they had received intensive training in the reading and recitation of vari- ous biblical and post-biblical forms of written Hebrew from a very early age and employed it as a major vehicle of written composition (see Stampfer 1993 for a detailed discussion of understanding and use of Hebrew in Eastern Europe). Moreover, they possessed at least some familiarity with biblical, Talmudic, and kabbalistic Aramaic texts. Finally, they lived in a Slavic-speaking environment, typically Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian. The ways in which lexical elements from these diverse linguistic sources manifest themselves in the tales will be discussed below. 16.1 Hebrew 16.1.1 Maskilic Hebrew Vocabulary As discussed throughout this volume, there are many instances of linguis- tic overlap between the Hasidic Hebrew tales and contemporaneous Maskilic Hebrew prose fiction. Perhaps one of the most striking of these instances con- cerns the Hasidic Hebrew use of lexical items typically considered to be Mask- ilic Hebrew coinages. These usually consist of compounds and collocations used to describe modern items and concepts lacking earlier Hebrew designa- tions. Examples of these are shown below; the terms in question are all con- ventionally regarded as Maskilic creations (see the references following each lemma for details). Considering this, let’s review briefly what we’ve found in the first letters: Aleph – represents the ONE, Almighty, invisible God, our FATHER, Who… Beit – “Housed” Himself in human flesh and Scripture, Tabernacling among us… Gimmel – Yah’s plea to mankind goes forth from beit, carried by the final Elijahs… Dalet – who “knock” on the heart-door of the lost, inviting them to sup with Yah… Hey – Those who open their doors (dalet) to the Truth, receive Yah’s Spirit (hey)… – Anyone who has been filled with the Spirit and imputed with Messiah’s Vav Righteousness, becomes a true man, re-connected to Heaven… Having received the Spiritual Gifts and Messages of these previous six letters, the new man is ready for effective SPIRITUAL WARFARE. Zayin means “weapon” and its form represents the SWORD of the SPIRIT. Zayin Study Page 1 Spiritual Meaning of the Zayin Zayin = 7 and is formed by crowning a vav. It represents a sword. The gematria of the word Zayin is 67, which is the same value for (binah), meaning “understanding”. -
