Jelica Stojanović THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT Podgorica 2020 MILOš KOVAčEVIć THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT, MADE UP OF STRAY PATHS Only two years have passed from the two hundredth anni- versary of the beginning of Vuk Karadžić’s struggle for “intro- ducing the folk language in literature”, that is to say, from the introduction of the Serbian folk language in the Serbian literary language, or to put it in the more modern phrasing of today: the standard language. The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history.

They manifest themselves in archi tecture, sculpture and painting, or in combinations or extensions thereof. The H borderlines are sometimes fu:a:y, but this is not too important. The repertoire of forms contained by a work of fine art is the same, regardless of which branch of fine arts is involved. Fine art forms communicate, i. e. they bear a message. They are not just any visual forms, but forms with content. If there is a message, there must be a system of recog nizable signs that we read in order to receive the message. In verbal arts things may ap pear simple and straightforward. We just have to learn how to read, meaning, we must know the alphabet, a system of visual signs which make up a language and its written communications.

  • 251 the Mongol Invasion of Croatia and Serbia in 1242 the Mongol
https://doi.org/10.26262/fh.v2i0.5294 Panos Sophoulis Lecturer National and Kapodistrian University of Athens The Mongol Invasion of Croatia and Serbia in 1242 The Mongol invasion of Croatia and Serbia constitutes a single, albeit extremely interesting, episode in the great western campaign of 1236-1242, so meticulously planned and executed by the armies of Batu, grandson of Chingis Khan and founder of the “Golden Horde”. Although Slavonia, Dalmatia and Serbia suffered less at the Mongol’s hands than did Hungary – the prime target of the offensive–, in each of these regions the advent of the steppe invaders caused havoc and induced unimaginable terror, as evidenced by the apocalyptic sentiment present in Christian writings of this time. The goal of this paper is to provide a narrative account of these events, one that can be used for general orientation, and at the same present new approaches and conclusions, partly based on recent scholarship not easily accessible to wider audiences. The decision to complete the subjugation of the western steppes, which had began during Chingis Khan’s final years, was made at the quriltay (national assembly) summoned by Ögedei, the conqueror’s third son and successor, in 1235. The following year the Mongols dispatched a large army, numbering 150,000 men,1 which quickly defeated and 1 The size of the Mongol army is hard to assess. According to D. Sinor, «The Mongols in the West», Journal of Asian History, 33, no. 1 (1999), 1-44, esp. 11, at a very conservative estimate this could be set between 105,000 and 150,000 men.

КСИО 3 (2020): 1-16 KSIO 3 (2020): 1-16 Amina Abaspahić Originalni naučni rad Odsjek za historiju Original scientific paper Filozofski fakultet, Univerzitet u Sarajevu DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.4926084 [email protected] primljeno / received: 30.11.2020. prihvaćeno / accepted: 25.12.2020.

  • Dubrovnik I Heretička Bosna U Prvoj Polovini Xiii Stoljeća
