“Expect to like this great as it may be exciting.” The War Diary of Sapper John Popham Fotheringham June 1917 - January 1919 June 2009 Sapper John Popham Fotheringham served as a driver with the 9th Canadian Artillery Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery in France and Belgium from June 1917 to January 1919. His diary, on its own, is not particularly detailed, except in certain small parts. However, when meshed with the War Diary of the Brigade, and the history of the Canadian Army in action in World War 1, it becomes evident that Sapper Fotheringham was involved in some of the biggest battles of the latter stages of the war - Amiens, Cambrai, Arras - only missing Passchendaele as he recovered from exposure to mustard gas in September 1917. John Popham Fotheringham was born in Ottawa on May 19th, 1897 to John Turnbull Fotheringham and Mary Popham Fotheringham. His sister, Laura, was born two years later. His uncle, George Beveridge Fotheringham (father of cousin Lieutenant John Beveridge Fotheringham) served with the Ottawa Field Battery during the Fenian Raid of 1866. J.P. Fotheringham studied Applied Science at McGill University in 1915 to 1916, serving in the cadet corps with CCTC McGill. On August 24th, 1916, at Ottawa, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a Sapper (Private) with the Canadian Engineers, being posted to the 3rd Canadian Divisional Signal Company. Following training, he left Canada on January 16th, 1917 on the RMS Scandinavian, arriving in England on February 6th. He arrived in Le Havre, France, on May 24th, 1917. He marched from the Divisional Rest Camp and joined the 3rd Canadian Divisional Company on June 9th, 1917. -
Althol Hobbs Athol Joseph Hobbs (1899-1979)
Althol Hobbs (The Architect, vol.1, no.3, December 1939, p.19) Athol Joseph Hobbs (1899-1979) was born 2 February 1899, the fourth child of architect Joseph John Talbot and Edith Ann Hobbs. In 1897 Talbot Hobbs had designed a grand residence for his growing family, to be built on undeveloped land at a newly subdivided western suburb of Perth, Peppermint Grove. By the end of 1898, Hobbs had moved his family to the freshly constructed house which he named the Bungalow, and Athol was born in the still incomplete home. Athol was educated at Scotch College, Claremont in the years 1908 to 1912, and then at Bedford School in England from 1913 to 1916. He joined the British Army in late 1916, and moved to India for training. During 1919 Lieutenant Athol Hobbs was engaged to Isabel (Babette) Hearn, trainee nurse and daughter of a Captain attached to his battalion. In October 1920, the twenty-one year old Athol married Isabel in India. Talbot and Edith Hobbs were ecstatic in July 1922 when Athol and Babette came to Perth on leave, and their first grandchild was born - John Athol Talbot (Tally) Hobbs. Tragically, just over a month had passed before nineteen year old Babette took her husband’s service revolver and shot herself at the Bungalow. The death certificate stated temporary insanity, but in later years came societal understanding that the probable cause of the suicide was post-natal depression. Athol had to return from leave to India, and his baby Tally was left in the care of the Hobbs grandparents. -

Abstract 350 words maximum: (PLEASE TYPE) This thesis examines reasons for the success of the Australian Corps in August and September 1918, its final two months in the line on the Western Front. For more than a century, the Corps’ achievements during that time have been used to reinforce a cherished belief in national military exceptionalism by highlighting the exploits and extraordinary fighting ability of the Australian infantrymen, and the modern progressive tactical approach of their native-born commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Monash. This study re-evaluates the Corps’ performance by examining it at a more comprehensive and granular operational level than has hitherto been the case. What emerges is a complex picture of impressive battlefield success despite significant internal difficulties that stemmed from the particularly strenuous nature of the advance and a desperate shortage of manpower. These played out in chronic levels of exhaustion, absenteeism and ill-discipline within the ranks, and threatened to undermine the Corps’ combat capability. In order to reconcile this paradox, the thesis locates the Corps’ performance within the wider context of the British army and its operational organisation in 1918. -

Bruce Beaver 2 Introduction For critics of recent contemporary Australian poetry, the term 'New Poetry' sug• gests primarily the work of those poets published in John Tranter's 1979 anthology, The New Australian Poetry.1 According to Tranter these twenty-four poets, only two of whom are women, formed a 'loose group'2 of writers associated with various poetry readings, little magazines and small presses in Sydney and Melbourne during the late sixties and seventies.3 Although there were many little magazines and small presses associated with the period, and earlier anthologies which had gathered together achievements of the New Poets,4 to a significant extent Tranter's anthology has circumscribed for critics the boundaries of the New Poetry group, and those poets published in the anthology have attracted a measure of critical acclaim.
