BURDEKIN WOODCRAFT ASSOCIATION

Isn’t it amazing how small things can change our lives? At my last report we were a thriving and active organisation, busily crafting beautiful creations from timber, helping community members with their woodworking needs, and having good social interaction while doing so. Then along comes a tiny little bug called Corona, and everything has changed. As with many clubs, we have had to suspend our normal operations and “socially isolate”. We can only do what we have been asked to do, and hope that our usually Silky Oak bedside table made for a undervalued scientists are able to find that “magic customer. bullet” we all so desperately need. Maybe then we can resume where we were when the “pause” button was pushed. In the meantime, though, our members are not idle. Many of us have reasonably well equipped workshops at home so we can continue our passion. As well, our Club workshop is available for members to use as they need, with the requirement to suit insurance conditions that they do not attend on their own. Bearing in mind social distancing needs, of course.

Before we went into hiatus we were able to have a huge Burdekin Plum tree slabbed and stored in our workshop for future use. We also crafted a Silky Oak bedside table for a customer, and among other projects Cheese board from Rose Gum and Blackwood, completely renovated two small occasional tables which with accents of Jacaranda and Gidgee. had been made many years ago from some beautiful, though unnamed, African timbers. It is a pity that the photos accompanying this article are black and white, and cannot show how lovely the timber is. As well, one of our members has crafted a large storage box from Rose Gum and Blackwood for his daughter. The original plan was to complete the box, then deliver it to her on the Tablelands over Easter. That plan had to be put on hold, so the box is flat packed in the member’s garage for the foreseeable future, until it can be delivered and assembled on site. Ah, frustration. Keep in mind that we are still available to help you with your woodworking needs. Some members are always keen to find new projects, and are happy to produce what you need. You can contact Mindi on 0418 986869, Phillip on 0409 615559, or find us on Facebook.

Burdekin Shire Council are helping locals shop local with their latest campaign. The best way to #BuyInTheBurdekin is to look for these posters in the windows of local businesses - or on their display cabinets, like this one at the Home Hill Bakery! Whether you're replenishing your groceries or grabbing a quick lunch or dinner for your family, Burdekin businesses are still open and operating, ready to help you where they can.
