Tampines: A History & Faces of Tampines by National Heritage Board Ongoing Level 2, Our Tampines Gallery

Tampines: A History presents an overview of the history of Tampines from when it was a rural locale in the 19th century to its development into a successful residential town in the 1980s. Through maps, photographs, and objects, the exhibition uncovers lesser-known facts about Tampines. The exhibition also explores the development of Tampines Town in the late 1970s, which brought Singapore’s public housing onto the international stage for the first time.

Complementing Tampines: A History is a temporary exhibition titled Faces of Tampines. Featuring a collection of community memories from past and present residents of Tampines, the exhibition presents a glimpse into the diverse Tampines community as well as reflections upon and impressions of Tampines and the experience of living in this town.

Our Tampines Gallery is a community project organised by the National Heritage Board in partnership with the National Library Board and with the support of students from Temasek Polytechnic and residents of Tampines.

The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon Author: David Grann Publisher: New York: Vintage Books, a division of Penguin Random House LLC, 2017

The Amazon has beguiled explorers ever since Europeans first landed in South America. Convinced that it hid an ancient glittering kingdom, thousands ventured into the Amazonian jungle and never returned. Like the ill-fated explorers before him, the famed Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett vanished in 1925 during a much publicised expedition to find the Lost City of Z.

80 years later, journalist David Grann sets out to solve the mystery. Facing starvation and surrounded by hostile Indian tribes and bloodsucking pests, Fawcett and his party were literally on a suicide mission. What could possibly have propelled men to risk everything to find a fabled city? Grann ventures into the jungle, and into Fawcett’s life story, to find out.

Grann’s reconstruction of the bygone age of exploration is a captivating blend of travelogue, biography and detective story, and a spellbinding read.

Food Author: Sylvia Tan Publisher: Singapore: Institute of Policy Studies: Straits Times Press Pte Ltd, 2016 Call No.: Adult Lending SING English 394.12095957 TAN

Take a trip down memory lane with food writer Sylvia Tan as she discusses the food and culinary culture of Singapore. Reminisce about the times when sounds of the ‘tok-tok’ hawkers would fill the streets as they peddled their fare with two pieces of wood, or recall the familiar sight of a ‘kachang puteh’ man balancing a tray of nuts on his head.

If you are too young to have experienced these sights and sounds, this book will bring you on a tour of iconic eating haunts from the past to the present. Did you know that the Satay Club used to be located close to a bus terminus at Beach Road, where customers were charged according to the number of sticks of satay they ate, and not how many they ordered?

This book is full of insightful titbits about how modern Singapore cuisine has been shaped. If you ever need some help to whet your appetite, read this book.

The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes—and Why Author: Amanda Ripley E-book

How do people react when disaster strikes?

When the planes struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, some people waited as long as 45 minutes to leave their cubicles. Survivor Elia Zedeno took a mystery novel with her. In 1994, the MV Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea, entombing hundreds of passengers who froze like statues as water flooded around them. After Flight 90 crashed into the Potomac River, Roger Olian jumped out of his truck and into the ice, knowing he would probably die too. But his heroism might have kept the five survivors conscious until rescue arrived.

We all wonder how we will fare in a crisis – this perhaps is why news reports of disasters terrify and mesmerise us. Reporter Amanda Ripley sets out to understand how the human brain operates under extreme duress, and to find out how we can train our brains to save ourselves. In this riveting catalogue of tragedies, she uncovers some unexpected, unsettling and hopeful truths about human nature.

Sekeping Gambar Seindah Memori: Merakam Gambar Anak Gaya Profesional Penulis: Zubye Rosli Penerbit & Tahun Penerbitan: Selangor: MPH Group Publishing, 2015 Nombor Panggilan: Malay 779.25 ZUB - [ART]

Manny Publisher: Beverly Hills, California: Anchor Bay Entertainment, 2015 Call No.: AV English 796.83092 MAN - [REC]

“Boxing takes so much from a man,” Liam Neeson narrates. “No other sport asks a man to sacrifice himself so deeply.” Manny traces the life of Manny Pacquiao, once a poor Filipino boy who has overcome insurmountable odds to become the boxing phenomenon he is today.

Raised in the shadows of war in the Philippines, teenager Pacquiao left his small village to escape a life of poverty. In Manila, he entered the ring at the age of 16 to support his family. Boxing eventually led him to America, where his dazzling career began under the tutelage of Freddie Roach. Crowned world champion in eight different divisions, his record has not been eclipsed by any other fighter. Today, he is cloaked in the same glory as legendary champions Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson.

Directed by Ryan Moore and Academy Award winner Leon Gast, Manny takes an intimate look at the trials and accomplishments of the Philippines’ national hero, and will leave you enthused by his fighting spirit inside and outside the ring.

After Lord Greystoke – aka Tarzan – receives an invitation to return to Congo, he finds himself in the thick of an evil scheme in the corrupt diamond trade, helmed by the villainous Captain Leon Rom. Alexander Skarsgard is a perfect fit for the role of Tarzan as he shows off his strength, athletic prowess, height and muscular physique. The dazzling Margot Robbie plays his love interest, Jane, and Samuel L. Jackson gives a brilliant performance as Tarzan’s sidekick, George Washington Williams, who helps Tarzan and those enslaved fight against oppression.

Set against the backdrop of the Congo Basin, this action-packed adventure features spectacular landscapes and wildlife. Not just a feast for the eyes, this movie also depicts the violence and slavery the African people endured under King Leopold II’s rule. A story of colonial greed and human nature, this movie is not for the faint of heart.
