Brewers Toast the Return of Real Ale - FT.Com Page 1 of 1
Brewers toast the return of real ale - FT.com Page 1 of 1 FINANCIAL TIMES September 4,20128:10 pm Brewers toast the return of real ale By Christopher Thompson On a weekday evening at the Rake in London's Borough Market the assembled drinkers - a mix of hipsters and suited local businessmen - are not supping Foster's, Stella Artois or any of the other mass market lager brands. Since opening in 2006, the Rake has only sold craft beers, of which it offers 130 different types. Despite typically charging more than £4 for a pint or a bottle, co-owner Richard Dinwoodie, 45, says the pub has registered year-on-year sales growth since it opened. "Our popularity is on the back of the foodie revolution, where people are more interested in taste ... we've also seen big growth in supplying restaurants and hotels, [some of whom] have beer menus and even a beer sommelier," he says. The Rake's success reflects a broader movement of beer drinkers towards cask ale and craft beers as Britain's overall beer market declines. In 2011 total beer sales were £17bn, of which ale accounted for £3.7bn, according to the British Beer and Pub Association. Last month Heineken, the maker of the eponymous lager and Kronenbourg brand, reported a fall in volumes in western Europe, including the UK, in the first half of 2012. It follows a long decline in UK lager sales, which have fallen by more than a fifth over the past five years. In contrast, cask ales sales have declined at less than half that rate, with many companies even registering sales increases. -

The following day I had beer spraying in my face as I spiked the barrels with Dennis and knew I was going to enjoy it. Here’s the view I had before I was Chair. With the jackets on and everything finished I was totally impressed, not least by the efforts of so many volunteers but also the amazing view with everything set up. Now almost a year later I’m the Chair of Thanet CAMRA Branch and finding out just how much we do. Because of this I have to express my thanks to Jo and everybody else for the work they’ve put in over the years to make this a great branch to be involved with. We have recently announced our Pub of the Year competition winners and I hope you agree with how good all the entries were this year, especially the winners and runners up. -

Festival Fun
STOCKPORT - - AND SOUTH MANCHESTER CAM RA CJI No: 158 FestiVal Fun s this issue of Opening Times went to press, the A 11th Stockport Beer & Cider Festival looked set to be yet another roaring success. Early indications were that more beer and cider than ever before was likely to be sold although careful management and a slightly increased order ensured that supplies lasted until late on Satur day night. Thursday night was a particular success with attend ance and sales well up on the previous year. On the beer and cider front several treats were on offer- the first commercial cider from Cheshire for many years was well received and the beer quality, despite the hot weather, held up until the end. OT's particularfavourite was a wheat beer, White Dwarf, a last minute appearance from the well-regarded Oakham Brewery - a view shared by many as this was one of the first to sell out on the Thursday night. The award-winning local guide, Viaducts & Vaults 2 was also selling well and the festival programme included a cut-out-and keep update in the same format as the guide itself. Look out for future similar updates in Opening Times. Look out, too, for the V& V2 commemorative T-shirt- a very limited edition for those A recent visit to the Beartown Brewery in Congleton enabled OT involved in producing the guide was launched - and worn to to catch up on the latest developments at this local micro. great effect!- by the guide's production editor Paul Hutchings. The brewery is now 21f2years old and is still run on a part-time basis The last word must go to Festival Organiser Jim Flynn who told us by founders Ian Burns and Andy Millican who have kept their day "We were hoping that this festival would be the best ever and so it jobs. -

It was first introduced in 2002 and was later adjusted in 2004. The relief is sometimes referred to in the industry as “progressive beer duty”. 1.2 Following requests from brewers to look again at the scheme over a number of years, the Treasury announced at the 2018 Budget that it would review the scheme “to ensure it is supporting growth in the sector”. 1.3 Since then, the Treasury has received submissions and engaged with a wide range of brewing groups to understand their views about reforming the relief. -
