Mw 15,1999 8:45AM My VISION FOR XAVIER

"My vision for Xavier is simple. What I want most of all is that a Xavier education be ofsuch qualitythat each and every graduate will say: 'I received an absolutely superb education at Xavier. 1 could not have received a finer education any where in the world.' 1 want every Xavier graduate to say: 'I know that 1 am intellectually, morally and spiritually pre pared to take my place in a rapidly changing global society and to have a positive impact on that society - to live a life beyond myself for other people.' "

------·------·------CLAIRE B. SEIDENFADEN ------

Claire Seiden[lden's career at Edgec1iff College lasted felr more than 30 years, but her work to keep the spirit of Edgecliff alive has never ceased. During her tenure there, she touched the lives of many people with whom she worked. It has been said that during the merger ofXavier and Edgecliff, Seidenfaden was the person who galvanized the people at Edgecliff. "She held them together all those years," said Joe Ventura, executive director ofXavier's national alumni associa tion. "She united her constituency and led the way with her commitment to sustain the Edgecliff legacy."

In 1944, Seidenfaden graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in history from Edgecliff, where she was student body president. After graduation, she stayed at Edgecliff. When the Edgecliff Alumni Association was formed in 1960, she was asked to become the College's first director of college relations. With Seidenfaden's direction, the alumni association received a Grand Award for sustained performance from the American Alumni CounciL Under her leadership, Edgecliff also received the U.S. Steel Mobieus Strip for sustained performance among women's colleges.

Seidenfaden wore many hats at Edgecliff. In addition to being the director ofcollege relations, she also had a hand in job placement, admission recruiting and fund raising. She also served on numerous committees at the college. The EdgecliffAlumni Association appropriately honored Seidenfaden in 1971 with the Sister Mary Virginia Sullivan Award, which is awarded for "out standing service to Edgecliff or to the community through career or volunteer work." Indeed, Seidenfaden has served both sectors in extraordinary ways.

Seidenfaden became the full-time director ofcollege relations for Edgecliff in 1980. That year she also took the position of assistant director of alumni relations at Xavier, where she worked to keep the legacy of Edgecliff alive. One result ofher efforts was the establishment of the Edgecliff alumni scholarship, which, to date, has assisted in funding a Xavier education for more than 500 relatives of Edgecliff alumni. Since retiring, she has consistently contributed to this scholarship and participated in alumni events. She is currently serving as co-chair of the EdgecliffHall renovation committee.

Outside of her professional life, Seidenfaden has worked with St. Thomas Parish Council and school board, the Guardian Guild, the diocese of Covington advisory development board and the board of Passionist Nuns. Most recently, she has been a volunteer at Mercy Anderson Hospital and St. Luke East Hospital. She raised her three daughters on her own after the death of her husband (William R., "Si," '42) in 1960. All ofher children are Edgecliff graduates.

Seidenfaden has selflessly served and given to Edgec1iff and Xavier with unparalleled spirit. Because of this service and dedication, Xavier is honored to award Claire B. Seidenfaden the 1999 Paul L. O'Connor Leadership Award.

45 XAVIER UNNERSITY LEADERSHIP MEDALLION

,.------..--.---~------.------JOH N E. PEPPER------

John Pepper is a renowned leader in the business community. He led Procter & Gamble to its most profitable times ever and expanded it to 140 markets worldwide. In addition to his obvious business skill, he is most respected for his hard work and integrity. Gordon F. Brunner, a senior vice president at P&G, calls him "the most principled person that most people have ever encountered." He thinks of people first, and prefers consensus building to confrontation. He is the nice guy who finishes first.

Pepper was named CEO and chairman of P&G in 1995. He began his career at P&G in Septem ber of 1963, after serving in World War II with the Navy. His first assignment with the company was that ofstaffassistant. By 1974, he had become the general manager ofP&G ltalia, and became international division manager three years later. In 1986 he was named president of U.S. business.

lnJanuary, Pepper stepped aside as CEO. His time as the leader ofP&G will not soon be forgot ten. His work in international sales helped the company to double its sales and profits outside the United States. He developed new markets in Eastern Europe, Russia, China, India and Latin America. While president new innovations such as Liquid Tide and Tartar Control Crest were developed. During his tenure as CEO the company had an average annual growth of 14 percent. Pepper has also done a great deal for P&G internally. He has softened the image ofthe company that has been seen as "fortress-like." By making the working environment less rigid, he helped to breathe new life into an old company. Pepper worked to bring more women and minorities into management positions, which has earned P&G several awards. In September, Pepper will leave his position as chairman of the board to become chairman ofthe executive board, where P&G will continue to benefit from his leadership.

"He has a passion for Procter & Gamble and what it stands for that has inspired all the employees," said Brunner, a 1965 graduate ofXavier's MBA program and a University trustee. "His belief in people, the men and women at Procter & Gamble, or for that matter in broader circles that he encounters in the community and in his dealings on many charitable fronts, is legendary."

Since coming to Cincinnati with P&G, Pepper has also been very involved in the community. Last year, he was given the Public Service Award from the Advertising Council for his philanthropic efforts. Pepper was chairman ofthe 1994 United Way campaign when it set a record of$44 million dollars. He is a strong supporter ofeducation, having served as co-chair of the Governor's Education Council ofthe State of Ohio. His involvement in organizations also includes the Yale Corporation and the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, an organization that works with several businesses and organizations to help meet the needs of children, focusing on helping them to finish high school. He has also been part of the Christ Church Endowment Fund and the Business Roundtable, which works to promote the long-term growth of the U.S. economy.

Pepper is a 1960 graduate ofYale University, and has received honorary degrees from Mount St. Joseph College and Sr. Petersburg University in Russia.

For the outstanding leadership ability he has shown in the corporate community and for his many contributions to the city ofCincinnati, Xavier is honored to award to John E. Pepper the Xavier University Leadership Medallion.

46 HONORARY DEGREE CITATIONS

JAMES W. FRICK

For many years, development for colleges and universities was fairly straightforward. There was an expected way to do it and an expected result. Then James Frick came along and changed those norms and shattered those expectations. Development work across the country hasn't been quite the same since.

Following service in World War II with the U.S. Navy, where he earned a Purple Heart, he graduated from the University ofNotre Dame's College of Business Administration in 1951. Soon he became Notre Dame's first staff member to engage exclusively in development work. In 1961 he became director of development. Four years later, he was made vice president of university relations, and held that position for 18 years. In 1972 he earned his Ph.D. in educational administration. In 1987 he became the first layman to be elected vice president (and vice president emeritus) of the University. For many years, he served on the university's board of trustees.

Frick engineered four of Notre Dame's capital gift campaigns. His last one, the "Campaign for Notre Dame", concluded in 1981 with gifts and commitments totaling $180.5 million, far surpass ing its goal. Frick also served on several boards at Notre Dame, including the academic council, the committee on university priorities, and the campus ministry committee. He served as counsel for the "Strategic Moment Campaign" in 1990, which raised an impressive $463 million.

A known leader in the field of educational philanthropy, Frick served as the volunteer president of the American College Public Relations Association, which has a membership of 1,300 colleges and universities throughout North America and Latin America. During his presidency from 1971 72 he began an effort to merge the organization with the American Alumni Council, which, in 1974, resulted in the formation ofthe Council for the Advancement and Support ofEducation (CASE), one of the largest and most prestigious professional education organizations. During this time he continued to strengthen the endowment of Notre Dame.

Frick has received numerous honors and awards for his accomplishments. He was invested by Terrence Cardinal Cooke as a Knight ofMalta in 1981. He now serves that organization as chair of its membership committee, on its board and executive committee. Notre Dame awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1983. He was also the first recipient of the James A. Armstrong award from the Notre Dame Alumni Association, and was named "Professional of the Year" by the Indiana Council of Fund-Raising Executives.

Frick has been active in several civic organizations over the years. He is a former chairman of his local United Way. He has served the Development Council ofAssociation of Governing Boards, the United Negro College Fund and the American Heart Association. He has been a director ofW.R. Grace & Co. and the Grace Foundation, Inc. and a director of KeyBank.

Presently, Frick is the president ofJames W. Frick Associates, a firm that counsels colleges and universities in governance, public relations, development and alumni affairs.

For his exceptional contributions to the field of educational philanthropy and his commitment to the community at large, Xavier is honored to award James Frick a doctorate of humane letters, honoris causa.

47 NEIL ARMSTRONG

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Spoken by Neil Armstrong during his first steps on the lunar surface, these words are some of the most t'lmous in American history. The black-and-white picture of the astronaut and the static-filled sounds ofhis voice created an indelible scene in the minds of millions ofAmericans who will never forget the name of Neil Armstrong.

Born in 1930 and raised on a farm in Auglaize, Ohio, Armstrong began his flying career at the age of 15, and received his pilot's license a year later. After high school, he attended Purdue Univer sity on a scholarship. Before he graduated he was called into active duty in 1949.

In Korea, Armstrong flew in 78 combat missions while stationed on the U.S.S. Essex. When he returned to the United States he graduated from Purdue with a degree in aeronautical engineering. He went on to the University ofSouthern California to earn a master ofscience in aerospace engmeenng.

Armstrong also worked with NASA as a research pilot in California. There he piloted high-speed aircraft, including the well known X-IS, which flew at speeds over 4000 miles per hour. In 1962 he was one of nine people chosen to begin training at NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston.

As an astronaut, Armstrong flew on Gemini 8 in 1966 and on the famed Apollo 11 moon landing mission in ] uly of 1969. He was the first person to set foot on the moon, and did so in front of a nationwide television audience. Armstrong and his Apollo 11 colleagues received a ticker tape parade in the streets of New York City when they returned from their mission.

Armstrong's long list of honors and awards is crowned by the Medal of Freedom, the highest honor a civilian can receive in the United States. He has received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, 17 medals from other countries, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Governor's Award from the state of Ohio, among many others. 48 XAVIER'S HERITAGE

Xavier was founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., pioneer Catholic bishop of Ohio, as the fIrst Catholic institution of higher learning in the .

Known as the Athenaeum, the college's first building in , was largely financed by European Catholics and particularly by Catholic citizens ofVienna. The first class numbered 60 students. From its beginning, the school was dedicated to the patronage ofSt. . The Athenaeum attracted students from as far away as New Orleans, Mexico and Central America, and its educational quality drew many local Protestant students.

At the invitation of Bishop John Purcell of Cincinnati, the Society ofJesus Qesuits) assumed control of the institution in 1840, ensuring a steady source offaculty. Under John A. Elet, S.]., the first Jesuit president, the institution was renamed St. Xavier College.

Xavier offered its first evening classes in 1841 and summer courses were introduced in 1914, thus beginning a tradition ofserving the unique needs and schedules ofprofessionals and aspiring professionals in the Cincinnati community.

In 1920, the college moved to its present site in Avondale, and in 1930 was renamed Xavier University, reflecting its growth and complexity. While women had been attending Xavier's evening college since its early years, Xavier's undergraduate "day" college became coeducational in 1969. In 1980 Xavier acquired the Edgecliff College programs and integrated them with those at Xavier, and by 1987, Edgecliff faculty, staff and students were moved onto the Xavier campus.

Xavier's growth in over a century and a half since its founding reflects its origins as a teaching institution which soundly prepares students for careers or graduate study or both. A Xavier educa tion, particularly at the undergraduate level, is marked by the emphasis on liberal arts learning contained in Xavier's core curriculum. Equally important in the Xavier tradition is the synthesis of human, cultural and ethical values; concern and respect for people; and an appreciation ofthe worth and dignity of the self and others.

The College ofArts and Sciences, Xavier's largest and oldest college, enrolls approximately 1,900 undergraduate and 100 graduate students, and accepts the primary responsibility for the liberal education of all Xavier undergraduates. The Williams College of Business enrolls 750 undergradu ates and 1,200 MBA students, and is dedicated to preparing business students for positions of responsibility and leadership. The College ofSocial Sciences enrolls 1,000 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students in specialized areas of human services.

Xavier has been an innovator in graduate education, establishing, for example, the first graduate program in Montessori education in the United States. Its graduate programs in education have produced the second highest number ofschool administrators in the state of Ohio. Xavier's gradu ate program in health services administration is a recognized innovator in the field. The Executive MBA Program, the Evening Health Services Administration Program and the MEd in Human Resource Development educate upper level managers, professionals and executives while they maintain their current positions in their respective organizations.
