Jenny (Braun) Liu ’00

Jenny (Braun) Liu, Class of 2000, received a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from following her undergraduate degree from Hanover College. A Clinical Counselor-Supervisor and Registered Play Therapist, Jenny owns a private practice, Counseling and Play Therapy. She is a graduate of Mt. Notre Dame High School.

“While at Hanover, I discovered my love for psychology and began my pursuit of owning a counseling private practice. After graduating from Hanover, I worked with adults with severe mental illness as a case manager, assisting them in their homes and in the community. While working as a case manager, I attended Xavier University and graduated in 2013 with my Masters in Mental Health Counseling. Following graduation from Xavier, I worked Jenny (Braun) Liu ’00 started her own counseling private practice, Cincinnati Counseling and Play with a wide array of individuals including high school students at DePaul Therapy in Blue Ash, Ohio. Cristo Rey and Aiken High Schools, nursing home residents in the Deer Park area, two to eight-year-old children in a partial hospitalization setting and children, families, adolescents and adults in a group counseling practice. In that time I became a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor-Supervisor and Registered Play Therapist.

“I recently started my own counseling private practice, Cincinnati Counseling and Play Therapy, located in the Blue Ash area. We provide counseling to adults, children, adolescents and families; our areas of expertise include working with adults with unresolved childhood trauma, anxiety and depression as well as working with children through the utilization of play therapy. “In my personal life, I met my husband Chris Liu in 2013 and we married in April 2015. We live in Deer Park and enjoy exploring the world whether it’s abroad, a weekend getaway trip or stay-cationing in the Cincinnati area.”

After graduating from Ursuline Academy, Claire Williams attended The where she was an involved member of Pi Beta Phi and studied abroad in Australia. Claire is currently studying to be a nurse practitioner at OSU.

“I’m specializing in pediatrics and will be finishing up in May of 2020 and then hopefully (if my dad gets his way) moving back to Cincy!” During her study abroad, Claire Williams ’09 spent time on Magnetic Island. The island is offshore of Townsville, Queensland, Australia.

Long time parents and parishioners Rick and Colleen Beckman have six children: five alumni and Annie, future class of 2019 alumna. Graduation will mark the end of a remarkable era for this loyal family.

Karen (Garber) Volpe ’00

Karen (Garber) Volpe graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Special Education from in 2008. Several years later, Karen earned a M.A. in Reading Science and a Dyslexia Certification from Mount St. Joseph University. She has enjoyed ten years as an Intervention Specialist at J.F. Dulles Elementary in the Oak Hills Local School District. An alumna of Mount Notre Dame High School, Karen works with kindergarten through fourth grade students. Karen and her husband Jim were married in June and honeymooned in Jamaica.

“I have a passion for helping kids that don’t have an easy path in life, whether that is at school or in things going on in their home lives. I enjoy helping them find their strengths as students as well as their strength in character. When I’m not working with kids, I love spending time with my family, husband, friends and dog! I like volunteering with the rescue group where I got my dog and doing other events around Cincinnati that support animal welfare.

“I have been lucky enough to travel to seven foreign countries over the Karen (Garber) Volpe ‘00 is pictured with her husband Jim. past few years and am looking forward to continuing building on that list!” The couple was married in June.

Tommy Fette ‘98

Tommy Fette graduated with the second class of St. Margaret of York School eighth graders. He is an alumnus of Archbishop and completed a double major in Entrepreneurship and Marketing at in 2006. Tommy moved from Columbus to Mason four years ago; he and his family are members of St. Margaret of York Parish. A Senior Account Executive for SAS Institute, Tommy and his wife Chelsea have three children, Lucas (4 years old) and twins Michael and Grace, who are one.

“I have so many fantastic memories from SMOY, beginning with kindergarten, taught by Mrs. Messer in the basement of Fr. Obermeyer’s house, all the way to our 8th grade field trip to and Mr. Tarnowski nearly getting kicked Tommy Fette ’98 and his wife Chelsea are parents to out of Wrigley Field for starting the wave. Lucas and twins Michael and Grace.

“There were so many outstanding teachers that had a major impact on my life including Mrs. Messer, Mrs. Vickers, Sr. Mary Ann Trotta, Mrs. Karl, Mrs. LoConti, Mr. T, and others. In retrospect, Sr. Ann Gorman did so many amazing things as principal and a leader to propel St. Margaret of York to what it is today. It is very impressive to see how much the school and parish have grown over the last 20 years!”

Lindsey (Benvie) Schaaf ‘99

Lindsey (Benvie) Schaaf ‘99 is a Mason High School graduate with an undergraduate degree from in Social Studies Education and a 2010 graduate degree in Special Education from Xavier University. Lindsey is an intervention specialist at Clough Pike Elementary School in the West Clermont School District. She spent ten years teaching seventh and eighth grade social studies at Immaculate Heart of Mary School before moving into an intervention role.

“I was a member of the third class of St. Margaret of York School!!! I live in Mt. Washington with my husband, Chris, and our son Luke, daughter Millie and our dogs Edison and Watson (both named after historic figures). Chris Lindsey (Benvie) Schaaf ’99 and her husband Chris are and I were married five years in April. He is the Assistant Technical Director pictured with their children Luke (age three) and Millie in the at Xavier University and also works in the video booth (20 months). for the Bengals.

“In June 2017, I made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with the School of Faith program and many other local teachers and principals, including SMOY teachers! We were able to walk Jesus’ path here on earth and experience Jesus in many holy places.

“As a family, we like to take historic vacations and spend time with family and friends!”

Leslie (Schuler) Michel ‘99

A class of 2009 graduate, Leslie (Schuler) Michel works at LexisNexis where she spent several years leading global teams and is now a member of the company’s Mergers and Acquisitions Team. Leslie loves exploring Cincinnati’s parks and trails with her husband, Chris, and their 2-year-old twin boys. Indian Hill’s Red Bird Hollow Trail with their twin sons Now we are enjoying everything that’s in our own backyard. Conor Faulhaber ’14

While a St. Xavier High School senior, Conor Faulhaber was an Inspire Award Recipient from Grant Us Hope. The mission of Grant Us Hope is to “transform the conversation on suicide prevention and bridge local service gaps through collaborative, evidence-based research, education and programs.”

Following the loss of a soccer teammate, Conor decided to raise funds and awareness to support teen mental health, as part of St. Xavier’s Jesuit Cup program. With family support, Conor solicited raffle basket donations from local universities and businesses, and organized volunteers to sell split-the-pot tickets during a soccer tournament.

In addition to raising $2,000 to support prevention programming and Conor Faulhaber ’14 is pictured with St. Margaret alumni parent Diane Egbers, founder and Board Chair of Grant education, mental health messaging was shared during a Mass and post-dinner Us Hope. Becca (Whatley) Brumfield ‘00

Following high school at St. Ursula Academy, Becca Whatley pursued her passion for acting at the University of Michigan. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008. A registered nurse for the last seven years, Becca works in the Cancer and Blood Disease Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. This energetic St. Margaret alumna continues to perform onstage in Cincinnati, most recently in the role of Annie Sullivan in “The Miracle Worker” with Cincinnati Landmark Productions.

Becca and her husband Paul were married this fall in Glacier National Park. The couple spent their two-week honeymoon on a cross county road trip. Avid backpackers, they have explored many of America’s national parks.

Becca (Whatley) Brumfield ’00 and her husband Paul Passionate about dog rescue, Becca volunteers at several local shelters where enjoy the natural beauty of Montana. The couple was recently married at Glacier National Park. she helps care for the animals. Becca and Paul love Cincinnati and spend as much time as possible hiking with their three dogs. The newlyweds’ favorite outdoor spots include Red River Gorge, East Fork Lake and Mt. Airy Forest.

Evie Price received The Scholastic Art and Writing Award of 2019 from the Art Academy of Cincinnati, College of Art and Design for Excellence in Visual Arts. Evie is a junior at Ursuline Academy. The student photographed a giant moth in her father’s hands, printed it in black and white and created an award- winning illustration using colored pencils.

2018 graduate John Paul Tew won first place in the 2018 Boys U15 U.S. Junior Squash Championships held at Harvard University this past spring. JP is in his freshman year at The Summit Country Day School.

Evie Price ’16, an Ursuline Academy junior, holds her “I won Nationals when I was ten. When I was eleven, I thought I didn’t have to award-winning illustration. try and could just win again easily. That is when I had a year where I knew I could do better. That is what propelled me to work harder.

“This year, the guy who I beat in the finals was winning every single tournament and was ranked #1 in the U.S. He was so good. I knew I wanted to beat him, and this made me work harder than I ever have in my life. I have realized through winning that I can put this work ethic into everything I do. Before every squash match, my dad and I pray a decade of the rosary together. I pray to God for grace and strength. I pray that I can play with my whole heart.”

Leah Gray ‘15

Leah Gray, an Ursuline Academy senior, was the Western Ohio Representative for the Girl Scouts National Convention. Leah worked on the project for over a year and a half and traveled to New York City to plan the event. The John Paul Tew ’18 is a dedicated athlete who won first convention, held in Columbus, Ohio, brought together 10,000 girls, female place in the 2018 Boys U15 U.S. Junior Squash leaders, celebrities and influencers for a three-day event. Championships. JP is a freshman at The Summit Country Day School. “Planning G.I.R.L. really helped me to learn how to be an effective leader. Once I was at the event, it was amazing to see all of my ideas finally come to life, and I loved being able to meet inspiring women who wanted to help young girls realize their potential.”

The extraordinary artwork of Emma Olszewski received a first place award in the 2018 Master’s Editions Children’s Art Contest. This Ursuline Academy freshman won in the 12-14 year old age group.

“I have been doing art for as long as I can remember, and to me, being an artist is so much more than what people think it is. Being an artist is a lifestyle, a way of living, and it makes you view the world through a different perspective. Annual Fund Campaign Makes Renovations Possible - Thank You!

The generosity of alumni, alumni parents, staff, grandparents and friends of St. Margaret of York School made the renovations of first grade classrooms possible. Students returned to beautiful educational environments filled with technology, furniture and materials that encourage optimum learning in a child-centered space.

2018 Funds for the Future Event a Success Thanks to Alumni

A huge THANK YOU to our remarkable Alumni Sponsors and all those who attended St. Margaret’s annual Funds for the Future fundraising event on March 24th at Belwood Country Club in Morrow, Ohio. The generosity of our school, alumni and parish communities raised more than $74,000 for St. Margaret of York School’s students.

The Boots and Bling Ball was a huge success thanks to the dedication and efforts of many volunteers, particularly auction chairs Shellie Foley and Allison Holland.

St. Margaret of York School Welcomes Principal Kristin Penley

Mrs. Kristin Penley was welcomed as principal of our vibrant school on July first. Pastor of St. Margaret of York Church, Father Jason E. Bedel, shared the following in his announcement letter to families:

“Mrs. Penley is an excellent fit for the leadership of our school. She has worked in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for 15 years as both a teacher and administrator. These positions provided her with a wide range of experiences in all aspects of school leadership including faith formation, student learning and data, staff professional development, marketing, grant applications, accreditation, collaboration with other local leaders, and community engagement. Mrs. Penley is passionate about Catholic education and brings a positive energy which drives school climate, culture, and environment.” Principal Kristin Penley, her husband Jamie, Gabriella (7th grade), Annabelle (6th grade), Tyler (4th grade) and Mrs. Kristin Penley joins St. Margaret of York School after six dedicated Nathan (two years) enjoyed Destin, Florida in 2018. years in the role of Principal of St. Aloysius on the Ohio School. Recipient of the 2018 Christ the Teacher Award, she was selected by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati for demonstrating excellence in school administration, as well as compassion, dedication and faith to all God’s children.

Prior to becoming a school administrator, Mrs. Penley taught for nine years. A lifelong champion of Catholic education, she is a graduate of McAuley High School, received her undergraduate degree from Mt. St. Joseph University and holds a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from Xavier University.

Principal Penley lives in White Oak with her husband and four children, three of whom attend St. Margaret. She enjoys spending time with her family, camping and coaching soccer. Dr. Rosemary Rotuno-Johnson Joins Staff as Assistant Principal

Assistant Principal Dr. Rosemary Rotuno-Johnson joined St. Margaret’s administrative team this summer. One of her roles is serving as the school’s special education advocate. Dr. Johnson works closely with families participating in The State of Ohio’s Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship Program and collaborates with faculty to incorporate differentiated instruction into our classrooms.

During the previous six years, Dr. Johnson was an Intervention Specialist at La Salle High School. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Miami University, focusing on the responsible inclusion of students with special needs into the general education classroom. With 17 years experience as a special education teacher, Dr. Johnson has also been a Dr. Rosemary Rotuno-Johnson, Assistant Principal, cheerfully faculty member in the Education Division at Mount St. Joseph University greets students in St. Margaret’s foyer each morning. and taught courses for Miami University’s Departments of Educational Leadership and Educational Psychology.

Dr. Johnson and her husband have three children and live in Fairfield. A long-time member of the Church of St. John Neumann, she has been active as a Children’s Liturgist, Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Finance Committee Member. In her spare time, Dr. Johnson enjoys working in her yard, playing board games and conversing with others.

Fond Farewells

Congratulations on the retirement of kindergarten teacher Beth Pisciotta and speech and language therapist Cheryl Hahn. These talented educators served children with grace and kindness. Cheryl Hahn’s retirement concluded 32 extraordinary years of supporting students.

Best wishes to Kevin Vance, Nicole Vicario and Nicole Youngquist in their roles as principal of St. Ignatius Loyola School, third grade teacher with West Clermont School District and Academic Enhancement Coordinator at Newport Central Catholic High School, respectively.
