“This composition of our time and place embraces 6 billion people with their faces young and old, some being born and others dying, some white and many brown and yellow and black. Each one is a unique individual, they all aspire to live life, to use their talents, to support their families and care for their children and elders, to enjoy peace and security and to make tomorrow better.

“Thanks to science and technology, human society is able to solve problems such as feed- ing the hungry, sheltering the homeless or developing more just conditions of life, but stubbornly fails to accomplish this. How can a booming economy, the most prosperous The Seal of Xavier University and global ever, still leave over half of humanity in poverty?

The seal of Xavier University combines three principal ideas: St. , patron “Injustice is rooted in a spiritual problem, and its solution requires a spiritual conversion of the University; the Jesuit order of which he was a distinguished member; and the Uni- of each one’s heart and a cultural conversion of our global society so that humankind, versity. The five vertical stripes suggest the coat of arms of the Xavier family. A right arm with all the powerful means at its disposal, might exercise the will to change the sinful wearing the Jesuit robe holds aloft the crucifix, signifying St. Francis Xavier preaching structures afflicting our world.” Christ crucified. The three sea shells signify the three journeys of Xavier into the Orient. Rev. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, S.J. 9 UNIVERSITY AWARDS

MAGIS AWARD John T. D’Orazio When John D’Orazio, a 2011 graduate, reflects on his experiences at Xavier, he highlights two major factors that continue to drive his professional career. “I chose Xavier for the strong business program, but the ethical Jesuit foundation has become even more important,” he says. It’s in this spirit that D’Orazio, who graduated cum laude with a degree in Business Administration and a concentration in Management/Entrepreneurial Studies, has “set the world on fire” with an impressive array of projects and companies. Here’s just a partial list: founder and executive partner at Proton Enterprises, a business incubator and non-traditional venture capital firm that focuses on disruptive technologies to empower entrepreneurship; managing partner of Ikove Venture Partners, a “startup nursery” focused on identifying and commercializing high-potential “concept” technologies currently in development at leading universities and institutions in the United States; and managing partner of Sitwayen Development Group, focused on social business development in Haiti. The wide range of products, services and technologies of his ventures share common themes of passion, drive and integrity that D’Orazio looks for in all his enterprises. “You have to love and believe in what you’re doing and do it in a manner that you can be proud of,” he says. D’Orazio acquired his love for hard work on his grandparent’s farm in Ligonier, Pa. When the family moved to Naples, Fla., he partnered with his cousin, James Murphy, in a weather-proofing and carpentry business in the summer of 2009. Their partnership continues today on numerous projects including in Haiti, where they focus on business incubation, commercialization, innovation, tech and development. When he came to Xavier, D’Orazio discovered the power of service through volunteering at the Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in Cincinnati. After graduation, D’Orazio went to Haiti, where he continued his volunteer work with the LEVE Foundation, whose flagship program is to provide safer, affordable homes for the Haitian people. “I really fell in love with the place and the people,” he says. “I saw a lot of devastation and a lot of opportunities to make some impact there.” Being of service to others continues to drive D’Orazio’s belief that entrepreneurship should strive for a return on investment that goes beyond money. “Social business is something I’ve become passionate about. It’s the ideal of combining a for-profit mindset for sustainability with giving back—a triple bottom line—investing in people, the economy and a deeper mission that’s bigger than profit for shareholders.” The Magis award recognizes a young alumnus who has achieved a high degree of excellence and embodies Jesuit morals and ethical values. For his entrepreneurship and commitment to improving the world for others, Xavier presents this year’s Magis award to John T. D’Orazio.

CHARLES P. GALLAGHER LEADERSHIP MEDALLION AWARD The Honorable John A. Boehner Ten years ago, in his commencement speech to the Class of 2006, recalled shortly after graduating from high school, accounting professor and friend Bill Smith encouraged him to try a few classes at Xavier. Boehner had by then already dropped out of college and was working as a heavy machine operator, but Smith made him believe he could afford Xavier. That was on a Friday. By Monday, Boehner had registered and on Tuesday, he was in his first class. But his admission was conditional. Boehner told Father Peter Buschmann, S.J., the admissions director, “Father, I know it doesn’t look real good. But if you give me a chance, I’ll prove to you that I’m up to this.” One A and two Bs later, Boehner had proven he was up to it and was accepted as a full-time student. It took five years of night classes, but he finished with a bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1977. At the time, he said, “it was the highest achievement I could have ever imagined.” It was actually the first of many achievements for Boehner, who would go on to a highly successful career as a small business owner and elected office-holder, completing his political career more than 30 years later as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. The son of a bartender and second oldest of 12 brothers and sisters, Boehner grew up mopping floors at the family tavern and playing high school football. He met his wife, Debbie, at Xavier, and they still live in the house where they raised their two daughters. Boehner began his political career when he was asked to run for township trustee and then the Ohio House. In 1990, he was elected to Congress and has held the seat ever since. A conservative Republican, he became part of the reform-minded “Gang of Seven” with then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) and was named chair of the Republican Conference. He helped craft the 1994 Contract with America, and as chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, wrote President Bush’s landmark education bill, the No Child Left Behind act, that Bush signed into law in Boehner’s district in 2001. He became House Majority Leader and House Republican Leader in 2006, and was named Speaker of the House in 2011, a position he held until his retirement from Congress in October 2015—after nearly 25 years serving Ohio’s 8th Congressional District. Xavier awarded Boehner a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in 2006. Now the University is proud to present the Gallagher Leadership Medallion Award in recognition of John Boehner’s government and public service and for exemplifying the values and mission of Xavier University.

10 PAUL O’CONNOR, S.J., LEADERSHIP AWARD Eugene L. Beaupre For more than 40 years, Gene Beaupre, PhD, has been a teacher and mentor to hundreds of Xavier students interested in politics, the public and the community, creating innovative opportunities for them to get involved in campaigns, public offices, and human service organizations. Gene began his career at Xavier creating and teaching an internship course shortly after his graduation in 1969, and simultaneously began his public life in Cincinnati as a budget analyst, serving as director of housing and neighborhood economic development. In the early 1980s, he pursued advanced degrees—a master’s in humanities from Xavier and a PhD in political science from the — so he could focus on teaching. He taught courses in campaign politics, media, and state and local government, and team-taught with John Fairfield in the Philosophy, Politics and the Public honors program, which he helped found and served as assistant director. Gene also created the Washington experience for PPP sophomores, who meet with elected officials, lobbyists, advocacy organizations and others in D.C., focusing on legislative and social issues of importance and learning teamwork and professional skills that serve them long after graduation. In the early 1970s, Gene created the University’s Summer Service Learning program that continues today placing students into 10-week internships in community organizations, helping them earn credit for working in a variety of public settings, and pursuing placements that often inspire and shape their later professional lives. And he created and directed Xavier’s philanthropy program that offers grants to faculty members to use in their classes, bringing students from many disciplines into the challenges of the “real world.” Along with his academic career, Gene has been a highly sought-after commentator on political and community issues by local and national media for his clarity and knowledge. PPP students appear on TV on election night under his tutelage, interviewing candidates and office holders, and providing real-time analysis and commentary. He also has been responsible for state and local government relations for the University, advancing and deepening Xavier’s relationship with elected officials at many levels. As an undergraduate at Xavier, Gene was student body president of his class. He is married to Lynn Marmer and they have a daughter, Emily. He was awarded the Key to the City by the Mayor of Cincinnati in the 1970s. In recognition of his extraordinary service and work exemplifying the spirituality of Ignatius that embodies a blend of humanism, pragmatism and service, Xavier is proud to present the Paul O’Connor, S.J., Leadership Award to Eugene L. Beaupre.

UNDERGRADUATE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Lynn Marmer Cincinnati native Lynn Marmer is a national thought-leader on corporate social responsibility and a sought-after speaker on the topics of cause marketing, corporate sustainability and philanthropy, and women in business. For 18 years, she was Vice President for Corporate Affairs for the Kroger Co., the third largest retailer in the world. Lynn joined Kroger in 1997 as a senior attorney in the legal department. In 1998, she was elected Kroger’s first female corporate officer, retiring in 2016 as Group Vice President and Corporate Officer. She also had held positions as partner and attorney with Dinsmore & Shohl, city planner for the City of Cincinnati, and teacher in the Cincinnati Public Schools. “I have been extraordinarily fortunate to do what I love in every career,” she says. “I have been able to build my life around service to others from each position. I believe I have received much more than I gave. It takes three things—finding your passion and following it, having a supportive family, and raising your hand and being willing to apply your time and talent in service of others.” As a member of Kroger’s senior leadership team, Lynn focused on reputation management, and leveraging and protecting the company’s brand. She led external communications and brand public relations including media, government and regulatory affairs, corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability, community relations and customer service, crisis management, cause-marketing and corporate philanthropy. She was also President of The Kroger Foundation. In addition to her extensive corporate responsibilities, Lynn has been deeply involved in community building and education for many years, including being elected to two terms on the Cincinnati Public Schools’ Board of Education where she chaired the Finance Committee and served as Board chair. She currently is a member of the boards of the Cincinnati Zoo, Port Authority of Greater Cincinnati, Leadership Scholars, Carpe’ Diem charter school, and the CBC/CRBC Education Task Force. She also serves on the Share Our Strength National Advisory Board and previously served on the board of trustees of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief organization. She was a founding trustee for the Cincinnati Development Fund, Excel Development Corp., and a member of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, Recreation Commission and Historic Conservation Board. She chaired the City of Cincinnati Water District Study Group and was a member of the Homeless to Homes Task Force. Lynn’s newest community service effort is serving as the executive director of a citywide initiative to substantially reduce child poverty in Cincinnati. The Child Poverty Collaborative is supported by the mayor of Cincinnati, the Urban League, the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, and business, health services, philanthropic, government, civic and faith-based leaders. Its purpose is to create a data and community-informed action plan to move 10,000 children out of poverty in five years. 11 GRADUATE CEREMONY

18 GRADUATE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Gary L. Sharpe Long before the concept of innovation became a rising star in the academic universe, Gary Sharpe practiced what universities across the country, including Xavier, now teach. As founder and owner of Health Care Logistics, specializing in manufacturing, packaging and distributing unique and hard-to-find products, Sharpe grew his business from a spare room in his home to a multimillion-dollar enterprise. His secret to success? Listening to his customers and his own instincts and not listening to conventional wisdom. “I’ve been a contrarian my entire life,” he says. “I’m not sure how my parents put up with me.” As a 1973 MBA grad, Sharpe entered a business world with a point of view that was also contrary to the conventional bottom-line mentality of doing business. “The world does not run in straight lines,” he says, “so you’ve got to think differently.” Equally passionate is Sharpe’s advocacy for teaching, resulting in him being named as the first annual Resident Innovator for the Xavier University Center for Innovation—a new effort within the Williams College of Business that blends innovation with Ignatian values. A constant theme in Sharpe’s nearly four decades of success in business and now education is a desire to help others succeed. In his own business, he takes great pride in knowing all his employees on a personal level. Guests who tour his facility are often amazed at how he knows the name of every person, how long they’ve been employed and the type of machinery they operate. For many years, Health Care Logistics employed special-needs clients, winning an award from the State of Ohio for its Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities in-house client/employee program. Sharpe and his wife Connie are also active with the Naples Equestrian Challenge, a program that provides therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with special needs. Connie is currently the program’s board president. In addition, for more than 20 years, the Sharpes have supported the Wernle Home in Richmond, Ind., a child-centered agency dedicated to providing opportunities for the growth and development of troubled children and their families. Sharpe also has served on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations, including leadership positions for three different Lutheran churches and as chair for the Brown Memorial Nursing Home Board in Circleville, Ohio, for five of the six years he served the board. At Xavier, Sharpe has endowed an academic scholarship for those who may not have the best GPA or SAT score coming out of high school. “I graduated from high school with honors and an award in science,” he says, “but I wasn’t good at taking standardized tests.” Now he’s passing on the benefits of his own remarkable experiences and success to future generations of innovators and independent thinkers. In recognition of his corporate and civic contributions, Xavier is pleased to award Gary L. Sharpe the Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa.

19 XAVIER’S HERITAGE

Xavier was founded in 1831 by Bishop Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., pioneer Catholic bishop of Ohio, as the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the Northwest Territory. Known as the Athenaeum, the college’s first building in was largely financed by European Catholics and particularly by Catholic citizens of Vienna. The first class numbered 60 students. From its beginning, the school was dedicated to the patronage of St. Francis Xavier. The Athenaeum attracted students from as far away as New Orleans, Mexico and Central America, and its educational quality drew many local Protestant students. At the invitation of Bishop John Purcell of Cincinnati, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) assumed control of the institution in 1840, ensuring a steady source of faculty. Under John A. Elet, S.J., the first Jesuit president, the institution was renamed St. Xavier College. Xavier offered its first evening classes in 1841, and summer courses were introduced in 1914, thus beginning a tradition of serving the unique needs and schedules of professionals and aspiring professionals in the Cincinnati community. In 1920, the college moved to its present site in Avondale, and in 1930 was renamed Xavier University, reflecting its growth and complexity. While women had been attending Xavier’s evening college since its early years, Xavier’s undergraduate “day” college became coeducational in 1969. In 1980, Xavier acquired the programs and integrated them with those at Xavier, and by 1987 Edgecliff faculty, staff and students were moved onto the Xavier campus. Xavier’s growth in over a century and a half since its founding reflects its origins as a teaching institution which soundly prepares students for careers or graduate study or both. A Xavier education, particularly at the undergraduate level, is marked by the emphasis on liberal arts learning contained in Xavier’s core curriculum. Equally important in the Xavier tradition is the synthesis of human, cultural and ethical values; concern and respect for people; and an appreciation of the worth and dignity of the self and others. The College of Arts and Sciences, Xavier’s oldest college, enrolls approximately 1,756 undergraduate and 42 graduate students, and accepts the primary responsibility for the of all Xavier undergraduates. The Williams College of Business enrolls 1,237 undergraduates and 498 graduate students, and is dedicated to preparing business students for positions of responsibility and leadership. The College of Professional Sciences enrolls 1,468 undergraduate and 1,173 graduate students in specialized areas of human services and the helping professions. Xavier has been an innovator in graduate education, establishing, for example, the first graduate program in Montessori education in the United States. Its graduate programs in education have produced the second highest number of school administrators in the state of Ohio. Xavier’s graduate program in health services administration is a recognized innovator in the field. The Executive MBA Program, the Health Services Administration Program and the Executive Master of Human Resource Development educate upper-level managers, professionals and executives while they maintain their current positions in their respective organizations. The mace symbolizes the legal and chartered authority of Xavier University. It is brought into the gathering immediately before the President. Historically, the mace was a war club. In the Middle Ages it was carried by a bodyguard to defend a person of authority. Today, its purpose is strictly ceremonial and carried by the Grand Marshal. During the ceremony, the mace rests at the front of the stage in its holder. A mace is a custom-made piece of art sometimes crafted from relics of the University. It can be decorated with gems and precious metals, sometimes in the official university colors. The Xavier University mace was designed and crafted by Bernard Schmidt, Professor Emeritus, of the Department of Art.
