12 THE MACE (Traditionally carried by person leading the academic procession)

From the fourteenth century on, the ceremonial mace was used by civil and ecclesi astical authorities. Today, carried as an emblem of authority and prestige, it is com monly used to indtcate the official opening of ceremonies.

THE ACADEMIC GAR5

The history of academic dress reaches for back into the early days of the oldest

universities. European instituttons show great diversity in thir specifications of

academic code adopted by the American Counctl on Education.

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, scholars wore long robes and fur hoods

during the academic year, initially to keep worm in the cold, drafty buildings. Over the

centuries the colors on hoods coe to represenfthe various academic disciplines and

to indicate the college or university granting the degree.

In the mid-nineteenth century American graduating seniors began to wear the cop

and gown. The bachelor's gown is traditionally block in color, with pointed sleeves.

The master's gown, also block, has oblong sleeves. The gown for the doctor's degree

has bell-shaped sleeves, is block, and has wide velvet bonds of block or white or crim

son. The velvet border of the hood worn wtth academic attire indicates the field of

study, wllile the colorful hood linings represent the official colors of the college or

university conferring the degree. Length of the hood and the width of the trim ore de

termined by the degree.

13 ABOUT ACADEMIC DEGREES

Earned Degrees

Ameri con co II ege sand universities confer four princi pa I types of earned academic degrees: associate, bachelor, master and doctor, representing four levels of achieve ment. In the United States, public and private colleges and universities, except those chartered by Congress, confer degrees under the laws of the state or commonwealth in which they are located,

The Bac cal au rc are, or the Bachelor's degree, as it is commonly known in the United States, represents the satisfactory completion of a four-year course of study at the col

!ege level, First conferred by Harvard in 1642, it is the oldest and best known academic degree in the United States. For some 125 years, the bachelor of arts degree (B.A.} was the only degree used in American colleges. The second bachelor's degree was the Bochelorof Medicine(or Bachelor of Physic, as it was then generally known}, and was awarded by the College of Medicine in Philadelphia. The first Bachelor of Lows degreewos awarded by the College of William and Mary in 1793, No other type of boc co laureate degree was conferred by American colleges prior to the 19th century. To· day the bachelor's degree con be eamed with on emphasis (maior study) in a variety of fields of study.

The :\ssocia!c degr•e Mpr•sents the suc"essful completion of two years of col legiate work. The youngest in the family of degrees, the associate's degree was first authorized by the University of Durham, England. It was first given in theU11ited States by President William Rainey Harper of the University of Chicago. The associate de gree is awarded in a variety of fields.

The H ono rmy degree is awarded in recognition of scho I orly and/ or creative a ttu in ments, or for distinguished public service, and was first given in 1692 when H:nvord conferred on honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology degree upon its oresident, Increase

Mother. Among early recipients were Beniamin Franklin {Harvard and Yale, 1753); George Washington (Harvard, 1776), ond Lafayette {Harvard, 1782).

1 4 THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER

Oh, soy con you see by the dawn's early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars tl1ru the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gal [antly streaming?

And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flog was still there.

Oh, soy does that star-spangled bonner yet wove

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
