Σήμα ποιότητας «ΚΡΗΤΗ» Quality Label «CRETE» Σήμα ποιότητας «ΚΡΗΤΗ» Η Περιφέρεια Κρήτης με την Αγροδιατροφική Σύμπραξη έχει προχωρήσει στη σήμανση τυποποιημένων, ποιοτικών, τοπι- κών προϊόντων και υπηρεσιών, με το σήμα «ΚΡΗΤΗ». Η ενιαία ταυτότητα «ΚΡΗΤΗ» αφορά όλες τις ομάδες προϊό- ντων. Αυτές, αποτελούν το Περιφερειακό «καλάθι» της Κρή- της (τυροκομικά, παραδοσιακά κτηνοτροφικά προϊόντα, ελιές & ελαιόλαδο, μέλι, κρασί, σταφίδες, αρτοσκευάσματα, παρα- δοσιακά γλυκίσματα, κηπευτικά κ.α.). Το Σήμα «ΚΡΗΤΗ» ακολουθεί προδιαγραφές, οι οποίες πι- στοποιούν την ΠΟΙΟΤΗΤΑ - ΑΣΦΑΛΕΙΑ - ΕΝΤΟΠΙΟΤΗΤΑ, σε όλες τις φάσεις παραγωγής, από το χωράφι μέχρι τον τελικό καταναλωτή. Τα προϊόντα μέσα από την πιστοποίηση με το σήμα «ΚΡΗΤΗ», αποκτούν αναγνωρισιμότητα και προστιθέμενη αξία.     22: COAST FROM TSOUTSOUROS TO AGIA GALINI CHAPTER 22 COAST FROM TSOUTSOUROS TO AGIA GALINI Tsoutsouros is a cluster of small one-storey flat roofed houses on the beach at the mouth of the Tsoutsouropotamo.1 The only remarkable object there was a monk named Isaac; from what monastery I do not know, but he was living there at least for the time. This man, no longer young, was what is called a Spanos, that is, one of those men, not at all uncommon in Crete, who are marked off by having either no beard at all or only the very scantiest. Their age it is always next to impossible to tell: it could only be said of Isaac that he was not young. Standing apart from ordinary humanity, these unfortunates, by reason of their prolonged but odd-looking youthfulness and their miserably shrivelling but seemingly timeless age, remind one, sadly, of Swift’s terrible invention of the deathless Struldbrugs. The Cretans in general are a well- bearded race and look upon the Spanoi with an odd mixture of derision and fear. In folktale they are always cruel and cunning, and generally villainous. What the Greeks of the middle age thought of them may be seen from the satirical parody of the liturgy called the Mass of the Spanos, a long torrent of scurrility directed against one of these unfortunates. In modern Crete they are credited with having the evil eye. The keeper of a kapheneion at Chersonnesos, where I have often spent the midday halt, is one of them.

Operational Programme for Crete and the Aegean Islands Co-financed by Greece and the European Union Preface Dear friends, The past, present and future of Crete are inextricably bound up with its exceptional natural environment. Rich biodiversity, a significant number of endemic species, a variety of ecosystems and landscapes of outstanding natural beauty are what characterize our natural heritage. In acknowledging the value of our natural environment’s multiple functions as regards healthy living and quality of life, as well as in implementing our vision of sustainable development, Crete Regional Authority has made the protection, sound management and promotion of our island’s nature its top priority. The NATURA 2000 Network protected areas have a significant role to play in realising that aim, given that they act as key reserves for nature conservation throughout Europe. In publishing this “Ecotourism guide to NATURA 2000 network areas on Crete” we present the NATURA 2000 areas on Crete, highlighting their characteristics and stressing both their value and their prospects for growth. Sculpted by time and six thousand years of human history, our island’s nature is a common good each of us can enjoy, while also being under the obligation to protect it. We can only hope that through this guide we will all come to better know the NATURA 2000 protected areas, and understand the need to protect them.
