Volume 120, No. 1 Journal March 2020

Hello Fellow Vikings, Chief’s Now that all the holidays are over, I’m hoping everyone is happy and healthy!

Corner Some of you are enjoying sunny weather in the South, and snow lovers are sticking it out in the North. Wherever you are spending the winter, Spring will be on the way soon! I do have to mention though, it has been a fairly easy winter… not too much snow, but a lot of sickness. Sometimes I feel like a broken record, as here we are again on surrenders. Executive Council has been working diligently to accomplish this task. Council has monthly meetings on the progress and looking at new strategies to try and locate policyholders. We have sent out repeated mailings to all Lodges. I encourage all Lodges to look at their lists and help us as much as they can. We know that we will not be able to find everyone, just remember that, “A good Viking, is an uninsured Viking.” Since September, we have had 200+ surrenders. We have also had a Melinda Worden number of donations through surrenders: Burn Camp – 14 donations, Scholarship - Grand Chief 17, and 8 donations to Language Camp. Big thanks to all of you who donated back to the I.O.V.!! On the upside, all Lodges of the I.O.V. are now in good standing. Communicating with the Lodges, by calling and speaking with the Officers, we made great progress. All lodge dues, membership lists, and contact information has been updated, and given to our administrator. Rod, Robin and I couldn’t be happier! Keeping all Lodges in our great I.O.V. is what we need to keep growing. Viking Scholarships are coming up. Just a little fact, Viking Scholarship Fund was established on June 14, 1963 at the Grand Lodge meeting, in Boston, Massachusetts. There are many Junior Vikings who have been fortunate to receive this support; in our family we have had two scholarship recipients. I am looking forward to the outcome of this year’s applications! Language Camp information should be out to all Lodges. Last year we had a good response from our Junior Vikings, and we received five applications this year! This program is one of the outstanding opportunities we have to offer our young INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Viking members. Well, today was the last day of Winterfest in Muskegon. It was three days of great food, music and fun! We had French Dip on Friday night, a Steak Fry on Saturday Night, and a Breakfast Brunch on Sunday. The music was awesome, and a few drinks were had by all. If you haven’t made it to Winterfest yet you should plan to come next year. It was started by Al Majors 48 years ago. Al passed away and the event has been picked up by his son Alf and his wife Dianell, and their children and grandchildren. When you look in the dictionary for “volunteer” you’ll see the name MAJORS. What a great group of Vikings! In October (besides my birthday) we celebrated Linne’s 100-Year Anniversary and had a Halloween Party that would have frightened Frankenstein. In November we had a Taco Dinner, a dinner for our Veterans, Jazzy Steak Fry, and a Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale. What a Christmas Season we had! We decorated the Lodge, had a Smorgasborg Dinner, Lucia Fest, the Holiday Mixer, a Sing-Along, Children’s Christmas Party, and Christmas Eve Get-Together. And, if that wasn’t enough, we also had an awesome New Year’s Eve Party! We in Muskegon wish all of you a blessed 2020. Thomas (Tom) Jandt, Past Chief, Linne’ Lodge #57

Swedish Tradition…. The Easter Smorgasboard!

Many families will have a smörgåsbord at Easter, a buffet style meal with several dishes. It has the advantage that you can skip what you don’t like and have some more of your favorites. Typical dishes include: • köttbullar (meatballs), • several types of pickled herring from a good supplier, • kall inkokt lax (cold poached salmon), • another cold meat such as lamb or chicken such as our excellent kall inkokt kyckling med citron och rosmarin (cold poached chicken with lemon and rosemary), • cheese flan, • eggs halved and garnished with fish roe or prawns, • new potatoes with dill, • knäckebröd (crispbread), • cheese such as Västerbottensost, • salads, which often include fruit.

Desserts might include truffles, chocolate cake, and cloudberry parfait! And don’t forget your Påskägg (Easter eggs) - egg shaped containers full of godis (sweets/candy).
