Pharmaceutical Latin Binomial Pinyin English Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis Scutellaria huang Scutellaria (huang qin) baicalensis root Lignum Santali Albi Santalum album tan xiang Sandalwood wood Fructus Amomi Amomum villosum sha ren Cardamon Amomum (sha ren) fruit Radix Aucklandiae Lappae Aucklandia lappa mu xiang Saussurea root Salvia nourishes blood, quickens the blood, dispels stasis, and relieves pain. Sandalwood, Cardamon and Saussurea rectify qi. Together these medicinals provide the main action of the formula by quickening blood, transforming stasis and rectifying qi. Polygonum (he shou wu) , White Mulberry fruit, Eucommia, Schisandra, and Dong Quai root supplement the kidneys and nourish the blood and essence. Red Peony root and Scutellaria clear heat, cool the blood, and quicken the blood. Chinese Hawthorn berry quickens the blood, dispels stasis, and disperses food stagnation. Western research has shown that Chinese Hawthorn berry decreases blood pressure, reduces serum cholesterol, and opens the patency of cardiac arteries. Cassia seed has also been shown through Western research to lower cholesterol, and is included here for this reason. Alisma drains dampness, and Western research shows that it also lowers blood pressure. Formula Differentiation Salvia Plus Formula is indicated for abdominal or epigastric pain due to qi stagnation and blood stasis, characterized by pain, chest or flank distention and irritability. This pain may radiate upwards. There is also some blood vacuity, characterized by palpitations. Clinically, this may occur in individuals with high cholesterol. Blood Mansion Formula also treats chest and head pain, but in this case, it is pain due to blood stasis alone, without the qi stagnation or blood vacuity for which Salvia Plus Formula is indicated. Ginseng & Longan Formula , Ginseng Nutritive Formula and Ginseng & Zizyphus Formula all treat palpitations from vacuity. None of these formulas address palpitations with pain due to stasis.
