PERNIKAHAN SEMARGA DALAM KOMUNITAS TIONGHOA PERANAKAN DI BANDUNG PADA AWAL ABAD KE-20 (KASUS KELUARGA TAN SIM TJONG) MARRIAGE WITHIN A CLAN IN CHINESE SOCIETY IN BANDUNG DURING THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY (CASE OF TAN SIM TJONG´S FAMILY) Bambang Tjahjadi (Tan Siong Bouw) Freie Waldorfschule Pforzheim, Germany [email protected] ABSTRAK Pernikahan semarga yang terjadi di kalangan masyarakat Tionghoa di Bandung pada awal abad ke-20 telah mengundang konflik budaya dan sekaligus membuka paradigma baru berupa kebebasan individu dalam memilih pasangannya tanpa batasan nama marga. Polarisasi pandangan dan tindakan terjadi dalam kedua keluarga bermarga Tan yang mencerminkan situasi masyarakat Bandung saat itu. Hal ini dibukukan dalam novel Rasia Bandoeng yang diterbitkan 1918. Novel ini merupakan cerita nyata keluarga Tan Sim Tjong yang antara lain membahas konflik yang terjadi akibat pelanggaran adat pernikahan Tionghoa saat itu. Masyarakat Bandung mengenal Tan Sim Tjong sebagai nama Gang Simtjong di kawasan Citepus Bandung. Melalui pendekatan historis deskriptif, sosok dan jejak Tan Sim Tjong serta dukungannya dalam konteks pernikahan semarga dibahas secara terperinci dalam tulisan ini, dengan harapan karya ini bisa menggambarkan kearifan lokal dan mengisi perkembangan sejarah Kota Bandung. Kata kunci: tan sim tjong, pernikahan semarga, hermine, tionghoa peranakan, rasia bandoeng ABSTRACT Marriage within the same clan had taken place in Chinese society in Bandung during the early 20th Century, which has caused culture conflicts. However, at the same time it generated a new paradigm for individual freedom of people to choose theirs partner without considering their family name. The polarity of ideas and their translation into action was typified by the intermarriage between two Tan families. -

Artikel ini mengidentifikasi dan mendeskripsikan mengapa mereka mampu menjadi penguasa di wilayah ini dari akhir abad ke-18 hingga awal abad ke-19. Masalah yang dibahas adalah hubungan antara penguasa Cina dan pemerintah pribumi serta hubungan mereka dengan masyarakat. Kajian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan dan persamaan antara pemegang kontrak Cina (tuan tanah) dan penguasa Cina. Mereka dibedakan oleh cara memperoleh lahan luas dan memperoleh kekuasaan. Tuan tanah memiliki hak untuk mengelola lahan luas dengan menyewa atau membeli dari pemerintah kolonial. Sementara, penguasa Cina dipromosikan sebagai kepala wilayah karena jasa mereka kepada pemerintah kolonial. Namun, dalam mengelola distrik sewaan, keduanya memiliki kecenderungan yang sama; memerintah dengan perilaku feodal. Kata kunci: Cina, penguasa, pemerintah, tuan tanah, kolonial. Abstract The Chinese was considered the foreign people in Besuki Residency, despite of they had settled in Java northeast coast, even some had become administrators in the private land of the area. This article identifies and describes why they were able to be the administrators in the area from the end of 18th to the beginning of 19th century. -

Global Indonesia In the nineteenth century, colonial rule brought the modern world closer to the Indonesian peoples, introducing mechanized transport, all- weather roads, postal and telegraph communications, and steamship networks that linked Indonesia’s islands to each other, to Europe and the Middle East. This book looks at Indone- sia’s global importance, and traces the entwining of its peoples and economies with the wider world. The book discusses how products unique to Indonesia first slipped into regional trade networks and exposed scattered communities to the dynamic influ- ence of far- off civilizations. It focuses on economic and cultural changes that resulted in the emergence of political units organized as oligarchies or monar- chies, and goes on to look in detail at Indonesia’s relationship with Holland’s East Indies. The book analyses the attempts by politicians to negotiate ways of being modern but uniquely Indonesian, and considers the oscillations in Indonesia between movements for theocracy and democracy. It is a useful contribution for students and scholars of World History and Southeast Asian Studies. Waworuntu, Zeffry Alkatiri, and Fuad Gani ABSTRACT This article is a further discussion of previous research which is a pilot project to observe patterns of cultural interaction within the Chinese community in Indonesia as a part of a project to understand the phenomenon of the multicultural society during the New Order Era. The specific target of this research is to study the socio-cultural interactions within the Chinese community in Manado during the Reform Era (2000-2014). This research aims to study the strategic adaptation of the Chinese in Manado, by analysing the obstacles and opportunities in their socio-cultural interaction with the locals. Using data from field research and literature studies, this qualitative research applies an ethnographic approach by observing various actions in their socio-cultural interactions. Radical Islamist Ideologies in Southeast Asia ANGEL M. RABASA DHERENTS OF RADICAL ISLAMIC IDEOLOGIES are a small minority in Southeast Asia. Islam spread in Southeast Asia largely through the conversion of elites and therefore developed under different condi- Ations from other regions of the Muslim world, where the religion was estab- lished through military conquest. The ethnic and linguistic diversity of the region; the persistence of strong pre-Islamic cultural traditions; the absence of a common language and discourse (such as Arabic, which reinforces ideo- logical and cultural trends in the Arab world); and the presence of substan- tial non-Muslim communities throughout the region accustomed Muslims in Southeast Asia to co-exist with other religious and cultural traditions and produced a famously tolerant version of the religion. There always were, of course, tendencies toward more orthodox and Shariah-based forms of Islam and periodic attempts to introduce more radi- cal interpretations of the religion. The Padri movement in Sumatra in the 1820s and 1830s involved an effort to introduce Wahhabism by clerics re- turning from Mecca who had been influenced by Wahhabi teachings during the al-Sauds’ first occupation of the city at the beginning of the nineteenth century. There were bursts of Muslim radicalism throughout Southeast Asia during the European colonial period—armed jihads to liberate Muslim lands from the occupation of infidels. Indonesia faced a major uprising against the secular republic, the Darul Islam rebellion (1949-1962). The Darul Islam worldview combined the goal of the Islamic state with the Javanese ideal of the Just King who would bring in a reign of justice. -

It sketches a variety of Indonesia's Arabs—sadah and non-sadah alike— and their contributions to the shape of Indonesian Islam, Islamic cultures and Muslim politics. It also traces the roots of—and depicts the historical dynamics and changes—social relations and interactions between Arabs and local populations. The relations between Arabs and non-Arabs in the country have always been marked with conflict and tensions on the one hand, and peace and cooperation on the other. Some Muslims in the country "have admired" and built a strong relationship with the Arabs and "Indo-Arabs" while others have denounced them as the destroyers of Indonesia's local traditions, civic pluralism, social stability and interreligious tolerance. This article tries to portray this paradox, discuss factors contributing to the damaging image of Arabs in contemporary Indonesia, and explain the rationales behind it. -

The Media, Saints and Sayyids in Contemporary Indonesia The Media, Saints and Sayyids in Contemporary Indonesia Kazuhiro ARAI* This article discusses the relationship between the Sayyids and the people in contemporary Indonesia, with special attention paid to the role of print media. The ulama of Sayyid descent have been extending their influence in the religious scene of Indonesia, the world’s biggest Muslim country. Today, one can observe yet another increase in the attention given to them. One of the reasons for this is the success of a new generation in da‘wa (call to Islam) activities. I would argue that one of the key elements in their attaining fame is the Indonesian Islamic magazine alKisah. In the discussion, the overview of the Sayyids in Indonesia is presented. Then, some aspects of alKisah, such as the background of its publication, character of its content, and reaction from the Sayyids are discussed. Finally, the role of the magazine as the transmitter of the Sayyids’ information to the people is located in historical context. Rather than emphasizing new aspects of Sayyids’ promotion by a print media, I attempt to draw a parallel between the activity of alKisah and that of storytellers in the propagation of saints’ legends. Finally, I suggest that the Sayyids, the magazine, and the readers act in a longstanding structure of what can be termed as a “Saints’ promotion system.” Keywords: Print media, Hadramawt, sayyid, Saint, Commodification of Islam I.
