Samia MIOSSEC, MCF, Université Paul Valéry Membre du jury Résumé : Abu Nasr Al-Fârâbî, est un philosophe musulman persan né en 872, connu également en Occident sous le nom d’Alpharabius. Il a contribué, dans ses écrits, à enrichir la rencontre entre la théologie musulmane Shiite et la philosophie grecque , et bien qu’il n’ ait pas connu la langue grecque, les traductions de son époque, qui étaient reconnues pour leur méthodologie scientifique et accréditées par la maison de sagesse de Baghdâd, lui ont permis de se rapprocher de cette philosophie et de mettre en place une philosophie qui lui était propre. En tant que théologien Shiite, Al-Fârâbî a adopté la tendance philosophique Néoplatonicienne, et a tenté, en même temps, de concilier le Platonisme et l’Aristotélisme, dans le but de mettre en place une conception rationnelle de sa religion, en suivant le principe consistant à se servir de la philosophie pour démontrer les choses spéculatives de la religion et conditionner ses choses pratiques. La manière dont Al-Fârâbî s’est servi de la philosophie en tant qu’outil de démonstration rationnelle, n ’est en réalité que la plateforme d ’une vision politique par laquelle il a aspiré à la constitution d’une cité vertueuse fondée sur les vertus et dont le but ne serait que d’atteindre la félicité. Principalement, Al-Fârâbî semble, parfois, en accord avec Platon et Aristote tout en étant, à d’autres moments, en accord avec l’un d’eux contre l’autre, mais il arrive qu’il se trouve en désaccord avec eux deux lorsque leurs philosophies s’opposent à ses propre s convictions religieuses, et le poussent à favoriser ses convictions concernant leurs philosophies. Abstract : Abu Nasr Al-Fârâbî is a Persian muslim philosopher, born in 872, also known in the West as Alpharabius. In his writings, he helped enrich the encounter between Shiite muslim theology and Greek philosophy, although he did not know the Greek language, the translations of his time, which were recognized for their scientific methodology and accredited by the wisdom house of Baghdâd, allowed him to get closer to this philosophy and to put in place a philosophy of his own. As a Shiite theologian, Al-Fârâbî adopted the Neoplatonic philosophical trend, and at the same time tried to reconcile Platonism and Aristotelianism, in order to establish a rational conception of his religion, following the principle of using the philosophy to demonstrate the speculative issues of religion and to set conditions to the practical issues. The way in which Al- Fârâbî has used philosophy as a tool of rational demonstration is in reality only the platform of a political vision, by which he aspired to the constitution of a virtuous city founded on the virtues, and whose aim would only be to attain happiness. In principle, sometimes Al-Fârâbî seems in agreement with Plato and Aristotle while being, at other times, in agreement with one of them against the other. But he sometimes disagrees with them when their philosophies oppose his own religious convictions, and that push him to give preference to his beliefs about their philosophies. Cependant, la divinité et ses paroles sont devenues, dans cette philosophie, l’objet d’une enquête ratio nn elle après avoir été le domaine d’ une révélation mystérieuse, afin d’être formulé es dans un discours rationnel. Par conséquent, la divinité apparaît dans cette philosophie en tant que principe et essence immuable, et se présente alors sous la forme de l’ intelligible. Ainsi, c’est grâce à son discours rationnel que la philosophie grecque parvint à avoir de l’effet sur la culture musulmane dont le fondement doctrinal se basait sur la glorification de l'unicité de Dieu et de ses attributs, en croyant que chac un d’entre eux désignait un caract ère qui est lui aussi au summum de la perfection. Avant de connaître la philosophie grecque, une telle culture refusait totalement toute approche rationnelle de la religion, du fait qu’elle croyait que cela pourrait engendrer son éloignement de sa convicti on de l’unicité de Dieu. Cependant, elle pensait que ce refus préserverait sa doctrine de tout ce qui pourrait lui nuire. Mais, après s’être rapprochée de la philo sophie grecque, elle se retrouva en confrontation directe avec la recherche critique, qui l’a infiltrée par le biais du mouvement de traduction des ouvrag es philosophiques grecs, qui débuta à l’époque des Omeyyades, et atteignit sont apogée à l’époque des Abbassides, en provoquant la naissance d’une philosophie islamique qui naquit au milieu d’un grand conflit politico-religieux. Au milieu de cette situation politico-culturelle conflictuelle, apparaît Al-Fârâbî qui, aux yeux d'Averroès, passe pour avoir établi définitivement la gloire de la philosophie islamique. En tant que Philosophe profond et original, il est l’une des figures cent rales de l’histoire de la ph ilosophie médiévale. Il fonda une école à Bagdad, où il donna des cours philosophiques, et de ce fait, ses ouvrages sont bien souvent une mise par écrit d’ un enseignement oral qui voulait, à travers lui, transmettre les connaissanc es qu’il avait pu acquérir par son étude de la philosophie grecque.

Funari University of Campinas – Unicamp Michel Fattal is a well-known philosopher, a specialist on logos from the Pre-Socratics to the mediaeval period, passing through Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics and beyond. He puts together classical philosophy and Christian epistemology in innovative ways, as is the case in his new volume on Logos in Plotinus and in Saint John. The book gathers a series of lectures, starting with a keynote speech, or lectio magistralis, at Rome in April 2011, followed by several others. Fattal lectured on a related topic in Brasília, 2016, at a Archai Unesco Chair meeting. Fattal started to explore Logos in ancient Greek taught as early as 1977 and continued doing so in his PhD dissertation (1980) and Pedro Paulo A. Funari Habilitation (2001), publishing overall 19 books and dozens of papers and chapters. This volume is the 17th in a series on the Logos, and it deals with the relational logos in both Plotinus and Saint John, particularly the relationship of the sensible and possible to understand, earth and heaven, humans and God. Logos as a philosophical concept implies putting together (function rassemblante et unifiante). Legein derives from the root *leg-, meaning putting together and choosing. Logos thus means relating, and so speaking, a discourse as composition (sunthesis). Parmenides considers the Logos as the critical reason, capable of splitting up being and non-being, what is true and what is false, krinai logo, to judge or split up by reason (Parmenides B7, 5D-K).

    Plotinus' epistemology and his reading of the Theaetetus Sara Magrin Department of Philosophy McGill University, Montreal July 2009 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Copyright Sara Magrin 2009 Abstract: Plotinus' epistemology and his reading of the Theaetetus The thesis offers a reconstruction of Plotinus’ reading of the Theaetetus, and it presents an account of his epistemology that rests on that reading. It aims to show that Plotinus reads the Theaetetus as containing two anti-sceptical arguments. The first argument is an answer to radical scepticism, namely, to the thesis that nothing is apprehensible and judgement must be suspended on all matters. The second argument is an answer to a more moderate form of scepticism, which does not endorse a universal suspension of judgement, but maintains nonetheless that scientific knowledge is unattainable. The first chapter opens with a reconstruction of Plotinus’ reading of Theaet., 151e-184a, where Socrates examines the thesis that knowledge is sensation in light of Protagoras’ epistemology. In this chapter it is argued that Plotinus makes a polemical use of the discussion of Protagoras’ epistemology. Plotinus takes Plato to show that Protagoras’ views imply radical scepticism; and he attack the Stoics’ epistemological and ontological commitments by arguing that they imply Protagoras’ views, and thus lead to radical scepticism, too. The second chapter examines Plotinus’ interpretation of the ontology of the Timaeus. In Theaet., 151e-184a Plato shows that Protagoras’ epistemology leads to radical scepticism by arguing that it implies an allegedly Heracleitean conception of the sensible world.

I desired to understand the reasons for a reversal I was discovering, one which enabled my particular treatment of St Thomas. It had become apparent to me that the “Aristotelian-Thomist philosophy” had largely given way within the French Catholic Church to more Platonic forms of philosophy, theology, and spirituality and that Aquinas had now been relocated within these. My quest spanning decades has been assisted by many who have passed, we may hope, to a far better reward than words of mine can bestow. I remember them all with joy and gratitude, but a memorial of one must be erected here: the sine qua non of my life in Paris was the never failing hospitality, friendship, learning, and the enthusiasm for the inquiry of which this book is the fruit of Bruno Charles Neveu. That he died while Cent ans was in press and was not able to see it added to my sorrow at his departure, a grief shared by the enormous flock of the scholars whom he supported and promoted so generously.
