The first banner shows rain dropping from clouds, grapevines sending out tender green shoots, and blades of young wheat beginning to grow. The second shows the sun shining in its brilliance, the vines full of leaves and bunches of young grapes, the wheat tall now, with full heads of grain. Scriptural allusions blend with images of the seasons to suggest the most significant event of history and the greatest demonstra- tion of our heavenly Father's love. It is difficult to take any of the seasons for granted after reading this passage from John Donne:

God made sun and moon to distinguish seasons, and day and night, and we cannot have the fruits of the earth but in their seasons; but God hath made no decree to distinguish the seasons of his mercies; in paradise the fruits were ripe the first minute, and in heaven it is always autumn, his mercies are ever at their maturity. It was the first clear effort in a Seventh-day Adventist publica- tion to use the emotional impact of art to teach a lesson. "The Good Shepherd" is a well- designed picture. The figure of the Shepherd and the mother sheep form a sort of triangle that dominates the space. There are a few flaws—the nose is in profile, while the face is almost frontal—but generally the effect is pleasing. The Youth's Instructor used the engraving on the cover of its bound volumes for a number of years. Another Smith engraving dealt with a social issue. In "The Curse of Our Country," which appeared in the January, 1862, Youth's Instructor, Smith depicted a small slave boy seated sadly in front of a tombstone. Again, Amadon provided the text. "Look at the little African boy in the picture," he admonished the youthful audience; "perhaps he is sitting at his mother's grave. How sad he looks! He seems to feel as though he had not a friend in the world." In this engraving, Smith has taken more care with the sky and vegetation in the background.

This is not to say that there is no longer any place for realism, or that one skilled in realistic rendering is not an artist, it is simply to say that since the invention of photography, many artists have felt compelled to experiment with new forms of art other than traditional realism. Two of the first Adventist artists who, so to speak, attempted to "put new wine into new wineskins" were Chloe Sofsky (1907-1970) and Irvin Althage (1917- ). Both of these artists have used their God-given creativity in depicting ideas in fresh new ways.

Michigan artist Tom Morphis has shown his interest in composition by sewing pieces of painted canvas together in various geometrical patterns in such a way that the result is a cheerful design executed in simple beauty. Based in Paradise, California, Robert Seyle has shown concern for design in constructing nail sculptures. Seyle takes what to most would seem to be artistically useless objects and assembles them into intricate patterns. Southern California artist Theo Smith, working within the tradition of op art, also has demonstrated a keen interest in design. His works are executed with exacting precision. Because people have different tastes, some will like one kind of art, others a different kind. What is important, however, is not so much that we all like the same, art, but that we recognize that art styles are intentionally different from one another, and that no one style (no one kind

As nature inspires us and tells us more about God, so human artistic expression can help us to understand and enjoy better the wonders and mysteries of His creation. Some like the mountains, while others like the sea, but none would say that God is a poor Creator because He created some things that they do not care for. Let us anticipate surprise in God's creation and in human beings' God-given creativity. The opportunity to discover and comprehend new forms of beauty is part of God's plan of enriching our understanding throughout eternity. ❑

Art class is wind-down time in this school. While the children color their pictures, the teacher sits at her desk and grades tests. For most adults it is the end product that is important. For children the activity itself is of value. The teacher who is tuned in to her children's self-expression can learn a great deal about those children from their artwork. The fact is, the only justification for art education on the elementary level is to expand the child's knowledge and creativity. An art program that does not do this for a child is a waste of time. Ideally the art class should be a scheduled class in the curriculum with enough time allowed for creation and cleanup. Though every art teacher would like to have a room just for art, with good light, sinks, and big tables, terrific results have been achieved by teachers in less-than- perfect situations. Most of us stopped developing artistically at about the age of 12. At this age we became self-conscious and more aware of peer pressure. It is at about this age that technique can begin to be taught. On the secondary level Adventist schools tend to fall behind public schools. Rare is the academy that does not have some kind of music education. Choirs, bands, string groups, and handbell choirs abound, and as a result, in this widely accepted, highly visible, uncontroversial area Adventist young people tend to excel.
