Today, the norm among workers in their 20s is to switch jobs every two years. But at Andrews University, many faculty and staff have spent the majority of their professional lives at this one institution. What has prompted that type of THE ANDREWS UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE commitment? Interim Editor Not all occupations are exciting, but they need to bring some type of fulfillment— Patricia Spangler (BS ’04) either in the form of a pay check, making a difference in other people’s lives, learning a new skill or being part of a team. Employees need to feel that they are making a Contributing Editors contribution to the overall success of their organization. In the posi- tive sense, it can bring an influx of new ideas and approaches, and often adding “new Designer blood” revitalizes and brings positive change. They need to have a sense of purpose to stay dedicated to their job. Bill Richardson served as a teacher and administrator for 29 Justin Jeffery (BMus ‘04) years, Delmer Davis taught English and worked in administration for almost 30 years, Martin Lee Sarah Lee (BT ’02) George Knight taught for 30 years at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Donald May (MA ‘87) Esther Tyler worked at the James White Library for nearly 42 years, Greg Constantine Vaughan Nelson (BS ’98) inspired budding artists for 43 years in the art department, Merlene Ogden (who is featured in this issue) served for half a century, and Daniel Augsburger taught at Andrews University Andrews for a record 60 years. These are just a few names who spring to mind; there are many more. President Current employees who are still actively serving were recently recognized at the Niels-Erik Andreasen (MA ’65, BD ’66) awards reception featured in the Faculty/Staff section of this issue. There are now three Provost more names to add to the 25+ category: Greg Offenback, who started at the dairy Heather Joy Knight and is now in transportation; Michael Harrington, who works at the dairy; and Susan Vice Presidents for Murray, who teaches in the behavioral sciences and social work departments. The wealth of knowledge and respect they gathered during their tenure has benefitted future generations of faculty and students. Andrews University Berrien Springs MI 49104 E-mail: [email protected] New GRaduaTE SCHolaRSHip PRogRam Announced Paying for graduate school studies just got a little easier for students attending Andrews University, beginning with the 2008–2009 school year. The university’s new Graduate Scholarship Program will be the first university-wide program to offer scholarships to eligible students in most entry-level graduate programs. The graduate scholarships will offer, for those who qualify, an overall percentage discount on the specific tuition for that student’s program, based on the student’s GRE or GMAT scores. G. Lyndon Furst, who retired in December as Andrews University’s dean of Graduate Studies, said the new scholarship has been a dream of his since he first assumed the position in 2002. “Nearly 40% of Andrews students are in the School of Graduate Studies,” according to Furst. “This new scholarship program demonstrates how important graduate education is to Andrews.” The scholarships are available to master’s level students accepted into programs which require a GRE or GMAT, or first-time graduate students in advanced programs (for two years only), who enroll for the first time for the 2008–2009 term and who have current (within five years) GRE (or GMAT for School of Business students) scores at the time of enrollment. The Graduate Scholarship Program will not be available to most doctoral students or to students in programs with subsidized tuition rates, such as those within the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews. “The graduate scholarship gives students who want to attend grad school in the context of a Christian worldview a little bit more assistance,” said Furst. “It’s a major step forward for the university in making grad school more affordable.” 4 F O C U S l WINTER 2008 campus update Study Bible to be published by Andrews University Press An international editorial team of Adventist Bible scholars has begun work on a new study Bible to be published by Andrews University Press, according to President Niels-Erik Andreasen.

FEATURE FEATURE Lulu Lulu Wightman experienced a call to ministry early in her married life. Despite opposition from the con- ference to a woman’s involvement in ministry, but with Wightman the support of her husband, Wightman began her first evangelistic series in 1896. Her preaching and teaching ultimately resulted in a church plant of 26 members and, in 1897, this church was accepted into the New York Conference and Wightman was granted a ministerial license. Together with her husband, she continued her forgotten evangelistic work for the next decade, establishing 17 church plants throughout the New York Conference. In spite of Wightman’s success in evangelism, there were still those who questioned her place in ministry.     "Saint Liberty" Featured in Grand Rapids ArtPrize Painting by Andrews Artist-in-Residence, Greg Constantine Campus News | Posted on September 27, 2018 By: Gillian Panigot, media communications manager, University Communication “Saint Liberty,” a painting by Greg Constantine, emeritus research professor of art and artist-in-residence at Andrews University, is featured in this year’s ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Saint Liberty” is an 85” x 48” painting of the Statue of Liberty. Constantine used a ready- made “machine”—the mouths of paint tubes—to apply the colors in gestures directly onto the canvas, referencing July 4 fireworks celebrations. Written out in a collection of license plates at the base of the painting is the statement, “Give me your tired, your poor huddled masses yearning 2 breathe free. I was a stranger and u took me in.” Constantine hand-crafted the license plates from vacuum-formed plastic, then meticulously painted and distressed the plates, applying actual rust. “The ‘Statue of Liberty’ statue in New York harbor is as much a logo for America as the ‘Stars and Stripes’ flag and the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ national anthem are,” Constantine says. “She is the only one of the three that pleads for the relief of the suffering and downtrodden. She personifies freedom and liberty, therefore worthy to be called a saint.” In the late 1970s, Constantine worked on a series of paintings on the subject of American landmarks, including the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the White House and Niagara Falls. “Saint Liberty” was created in 1978 as part of this collection and was selected to be exhibited in the American Ambassador’s residence in Athens, Greece, during the 2004 Olympics.
