Introduction The thoroughness and value of Johannes Scheuchzer's botanical works have made it difficult to believe that botany only represented a minor part of his life. He was born on March the 20th 1684 in Zürich. He travelled, at a very young age, through the Alps with his brother Johann Jacob (1672–1733), who was 12 years his senior and a pioneer palaeobotanist and palaeontologist (STAFLEU & COWAN 1985). He participated in his brother's scientific activities before beginning studies in medicine.

From these species, 135 are native taxa, and 11 are archeophytes. In addition, one taxon is now considered to be extinct. Among the 147 taxa, 8 are endemic species. Central Europe, including Poland, does not have many endemic species. Only a few dozen endemic species have been identified in this paper, mainly in the Carpathians and the adjacent uplands, e.g., the Polish Jura in southern Poland. The most numerous genera among the 32 present in the crop wild relatives (CWR) of Poaceae family are: The genus Festuca (33 species), Poa (19), and Bromus (11). In turn, ten genera are represented by only one species per genus. A good representative of groups of grasses occur in xerothermic grasslands, and other smaller groups can be found in forests, mountains, or dunes. CWR species from the Poaceae family have the potential for different uses in terms of the ecosystem services benefit.

Twelve relevés were sampled on Mt. Mučanj (western Serbia), which were then compared with similar relevés from other parts of the Balkan Peninsula by means of numerical analyses. The relevés were classified using cluster analysis, while the ordination was con- ducted using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). The results suggest the occurrence of two floristi- cally well defined Dinaric associations in Serbia: Seslerio juncifoliae-Edraianthetum graminifolii ass. nova from Mt. Mokra Gora (Oxytropidion urumovii, Elyno-Seslerietea) and Diantho petraeae-Seslerietum juncifoliae ass. nova (Chrysopogono-Saturejion, Festuco-Brometea) from Mt. Mučanj. Dvanajst vegetacijskih popisov smo naredili na gori Mučanj (zahodna Srbija) in jih z numeričnimi metodami primerjali s podobnimi popisi z drugih delov Balkanskega polotoka. • Is the Tussock Form of Festuca Novae-Zelandiae of Recent Origin?
4 Is the Tussock Form of Festuca novae-zelandiae of Recent Origin? Janice M. Lord* Department of Plant & Microbial Sciences, University of Canterbury, Christchurch Tussock grasses are characteristic plants of much of montane Canterbury. Possible factors involved in the evolution of the tussock form include modification of the microclimate of the interior leaves resulting in reduced water-stress etc., or protection of the interior leaves from the attentions of herbivores. The tightly packed form of tussocks also means that an individual plant can better resist invasion of its 'territory'. Modification of the microclimate of interior leaves may be an important factor in the success of tussock grasses such as Festuca novae-zelandiae (hard tussock) in the relatively dry, windy Canterbury high country (Wardle 1963). However, wetland sedges such as Schoenus pauciflorus, Carex secta, Carex Comans, Carex buchananii, Uncinia uncinata, Uncinia caespitosa, and many others also form tussocks, so desiccation cannot be a primary factor in all cases. Grazing and browsing may have played a role in the evolution of the tussock form in New Zealand. New Zealand had a number of large ground-dwelling birds such as geese, swans, ducks and rails (Holdaway 1989) that would have frequented open areas and river flood-plains. These areas would have been the pre-human habitat of short-tussocks such as Festuca novae-zelandiae and Poa cita. These birds may have attacked tussock grasses and sedges in the same way that kea, takahe and Canada geese do today. Of course this is all assuming that the tussock habit is 'natural' for New Zealand taxa and evolved in response to conditions found within New Zealand; for genera such as Chionochloa this is a reasonable assumption.

Montserrat Received 15 November 2012; accepted 10 November 2013 Abstract FESCUES OF THE INTRAVAGINAL GROUP OF FESTUCA L. SECTION FESTUCA IN THE LOWLAND AND MONTANE AREAS OF THE NORTHEASTERN IBERIAN PENINSULA.— Morphologically similar fescues occur across the study area (Mediterranean area of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula) at low and middle elevations. With the exception of the high mountain or alpine species, these populations are reviewed here, with particular attention being paid to the Festuca inops (F. gracilior) group, as well as to some other species, in particular F. lemanii, which are not easily understood and can complicate identification, especially where the taxa occur sympatrically. The application of the binomen F. inops De Not. to some of the Iberian populations constituting the F. inops group is discussed. New records for F. tarraconensis, F. occitanica, F. michaelis and F. heteroidea amplify the distribution range of these little-known taxa within the Iberian Peninsula.
