To La Serena What severe and brown earth, sun-soaked, barren, poor, and torn by a thousand stone needles. Softened by pastures where the bells lend their voice to the sheep. Earth watched over by castles already void, of dry battlements, lichen and wild-fig covered, silent witness of the passage of time. Naked earth of trees and undergrowth, of mountain crags, dark and ashen, of a dying greyish green cut out against the sky like a Chinese shadow. And however, so beautiful. In spring the breeze carries the scent of labdanum and heath to the plain, and the rosemary prays to its god, the Sun, giving to the air a magic aura of sanctity, as if bathing it in incense. Winter sows the earth with torrents, ponds, streams leaping and sparkling, their banks carpeted with the tiniest flowers whose names only botanists know. Spring dries the soul of La Serena and shrouds it with flowers, crowning it with beauty, then to clothe it in fields of golden hay combed by the east wind in summer. Everything in La Serena is ephemeral, as a lily petal left on the altar, as the winged soul of a butterfly, as the tears of a child. Only the holm oak, brown like earth, remain in time, year after year, standing, silent, with their gray trunks, their hardy leaves, their gnarled strong and haggard branches. 305 306 Generalities 307 308 Generalities 1. Dolores Infante4 · Seung‑Chul Kim3 · Jean‑François Léger2,5 Received: 23 December 2017 / Accepted: 18 May 2018 / Published online: 19 July 2018 © Springer-Verlag GmbH Austria, part of Springer Nature 2018 Abstract We describe a new clif-dwelling species within Sonchus (Asteraceae): Sonchus boulosii and analyze its systematic position and evolutionary signifcance; in addition, we provide a key to the species of Sonchus in Morocco. Both morphological and ecological characteristics suggest a close relationship of S. boulosii with taxa of section Pustulati. However, ITS nrDNA and cpDNA matK markers indicate its uncertain position within the genus, but clear genetic diferentiation from the remaining major clades. ITS phylogenetic trees show that likely evolutionary shifts to rocky habitat took place at least fve times within genus Sonchus and that sect. Pustulati and S. boulosii clades have a clearly independent evolutionary origin. We postulate that the strong resemblance of S. boulosii to other rocky species refects a phenomenon of homoplasy, probably driven by parallel evolutionary adaptations to the severe ecological constraints of its clif face habitat. Therefore, a new section is also described, which includes S. boulosii as its sole representative: section Pulvinati. According to phylogenetic trees, the new clade may share its common ancestor with the clade comprising sections Maritimi and Arvenses, from which it is widely divergent in morphology and ecology, with the exception of Sonchus novae-zelandiae. -

Simmons Abstract—Chloroplast (trnL–F and rbcL) sequences were used to reconstruct the phylogeny of Geraniaceae and Hypseocharitaceae. According to these data Hypseocharitaceae and Geraniaceae are monophyletic. Pelargonium and Monsonia are sisters to the largest clade of Geraniaceae, formed by Geranium, Erodium and California. According to molecular dating and dispersal-vicariance analysis, the split of the stem branches of Geraniaceae probably occurred during the Oligocene, in southern Africa or in southern Africa plus the Mediterranean area. However, their diversification occurred during the Miocene, coinciding with the beginning of major aridification events in their distribution areas. An ancestor of the largest clade of Geraniaceae (Geranium, Erodium, and California) colonised a number of habitats in the northern hemisphere and in South American mountain ranges. In summary, the evolution of the Geraniaceae is marked by the dispersal of ancestors from Southern Africa to cold, temperate and often disturbed habitats in the rest of world, where only generalist pollination and facultative autogamy could ensure sufficient seed production and survival. WOLF 16.1 Introduction and historical summary / Over the past 70 years, many fern classifications, nearly all based on morphology, most explicitly or implicitly phylogenetic, have been proposed. The most complete and commonly used classifications, some intended primar• ily as herbarium (filing) schemes, are summarized in Table 16.1, and include: Christensen (1938), Copeland (1947), Holttum (1947, 1949), Nayar (1970), Bierhorst (1971), Crabbe et al. (1975), Pichi Sermolli (1977), Ching (1978), Tryon and Tryon (1982), Kramer (in Kubitzki, 1990), Hennipman (1996), and Stevenson and Loconte (1996). Other classifications or trees implying relationships, some with a regional focus, include Bower (1926), Ching (1940), Dickason (1946), Wagner (1969), Tagawa and Iwatsuki (1972), Holttum (1973), and Mickel (1974). Tryon (1952) and Pichi Sermolli (1973) reviewed and reproduced many of these and still earlier classifica• tions, and Pichi Sermolli (1970, 1981, 1982, 1986) also summarized information on family names of ferns. Smith (1996) provided a summary and discussion of recent classifications. With the advent of cladistic methods and molecular sequencing techniques, there has been an increased interest in classifications reflecting evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic studies robustly support a basal dichotomy within vascular plants, separating the lycophytes (less than 1 % of extant vascular plants) from the euphyllophytes (Figure 16.l; Raubeson and Jansen, 1992, Kenrick and Crane, 1997; Pryer et al., 2001a, 2004a, 2004b; Qiu et al., 2006). Recientemente ha sido publicada una nueva propuesta de clasificación de las plantas vasculares sin semilla (PPG1) hasta el rango de género, basada en caracteres morfológicos y filogenias moleculares, siendo consensuada por un gran número de especialistas en pteridología. Tras un año desde su aparición ha sido ampliamente aceptada por la comunidad científica. Esta nueva propuesta de clasificación presenta una serie de importantes cambios respecto a sistemas anteriores, entre ellos el empleado para la Flora Iberica I. Este trabajo plantea una actualización a la propuesta del PPG1 de la clasificación y nomenclatura de los taxones de licófitos y helechos de la flora ibérica. [en] Novelties for the iberian pteridoflora in the context of a new system for the seedless vascular plants Abstract. Recently, a new classification proposal for the seedless vascular plants, until the range of genus (PPG1), has come to light. This system considers both morphological characters and molecular phylogenies, and is based on consensus by a large number of specialists in pteridology. In its first year of life, it is being widely accepted by the scientific community. This taxonomic classification presents a series of novelties with respect to previous systems, including the one used for Flora Iberica. -
