NHESP is responsible for the conservation and protection of hundreds of species that are not hunted, fished, trapped, or commercially harvested in the state. The Program's highest priority is protecting the 176 species of vertebrate and invertebrate animals and 259 species of native plants that are officially listed as Endangered, Threatened or of Special Concern in Massachusetts. Endangered species conservation in Massachusetts depends on you! A major source of funding for the protection of rare and endangered species comes from voluntary donations on state income tax forms. Contributions go to the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Fund, which provides a portion of the operating budget for the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program. Maritime Alps 2007
The Maritime Alps Wildlife at Leisure A Greentours Tour Report 4th to 12th July 2018 Led by Paul Cardy Daily Accounts and Systematic Lists written by Paul Cardy The third of the Greentours summer Alpine trilogy, following on from the Dolomites and the Central Italian Alps, was an excellent week in the western Alps, on both the French and Italian sides of the glorious Maritime Alps. Even after eighteen years of leading tours here, and living just to the north in Italy, the area still holds some surprises. The wealth of flowers was a daily feature, and among many plant highlights were Allium narcissiflorum, Saxifraga cochlearis, and Saxifraga callosa all in fine flower, the latter locally abundant cascading from cliffs and walls. Notable were the beautiful endemic Viola valderia, many of the local speciality Nigritella corneliana, Primula latifolia, Gentiana rostanii, Phyteuma globulariifolium, and the endemic Knautia mollis. It was also a very good season for butterflies, stand outs including Clouded Apollo, White-letter Hairstreak, Large Blue, Ripart’s Anomalous Blue, Duke of Burgundy, Southern White Admiral, Large Tortoiseshell, Twin-spot Fritillary, Lesser-spotted Fritillary (rare here), Grison’s Fritillary, False Mnestra Ringlet, and Lulworth Skipper. Our hotel for the week was situated in the hamlet of Casterino, on the eastern boundary of the Mercantour National Park. The fine location allowed easy access to a great variety of habitats, the length of the Roya valley, lower Mediterranean influenced sites, the Val de Merveilles, and the Italian Alpi Maritime, a superbly productive area. We enjoyed superb dinners in the hotel’s excellent restaurant, complete with log fire and paintings of such subjects as Ibex standing among Saxifraga florulenta! Although we were in France, the area has a distinct Italian feel. -

New sequence data from representatives of the almost unexplored New World, New Zealand, and Eastern Asian centres were added to those of the panMediterranean region and used to reconstruct the phylogeny of the group and to calculate the times of lineage- splitting using Bayesian approaches. The traditional separation between broad-leaved and fine-leaved Festuca species was still main- tained, though several new broad-leaved lineages fell within the fine-leaved clade or were placed in an unsupported intermediate position. A strong biogeographical signal was detected for several Asian-American, American, Neozeylandic, and Macaronesian clades with dif- ferent aifinities to both the broad and the fine-leaved Festuca. Bayesian estimates of divergence and dispersal-vicariance analyses indicate that the broad-leaved and fine-leaved Loliinae likely originated in the Miocene (13 My) in the panMediterranean-SW Asian region and then expanded towards C and E Asia from where they colonized the New World. -

Ihre historische, botanische und nomenklatorische Bedeutung wird diskutiert. Introduction The thoroughness and value of Johannes Scheuchzer's botanical works have made it difficult to believe that botany only represented a minor part of his life. He was born on March the 20th 1684 in Zürich. He travelled, at a very young age, through the Alps with his brother Johann Jacob (1672–1733), who was 12 years his senior and a pioneer palaeobotanist and palaeontologist (STAFLEU & COWAN 1985). He participated in his brother's scientific activities before beginning studies in medicine. -

From these species, 135 are native taxa, and 11 are archeophytes. In addition, one taxon is now considered to be extinct. Among the 147 taxa, 8 are endemic species. Central Europe, including Poland, does not have many endemic species. Only a few dozen endemic species have been identified in this paper, mainly in the Carpathians and the adjacent uplands, e.g., the Polish Jura in southern Poland. The most numerous genera among the 32 present in the crop wild relatives (CWR) of Poaceae family are: The genus Festuca (33 species), Poa (19), and Bromus (11). In turn, ten genera are represented by only one species per genus. A good representative of groups of grasses occur in xerothermic grasslands, and other smaller groups can be found in forests, mountains, or dunes. CWR species from the Poaceae family have the potential for different uses in terms of the ecosystem services benefit. -
Numerical Evaluation of Grasslands Dominated by Sesleria Juncifolia Agg
HACQUETIA 13/1 • 2014, 57–77 DOI: 10.2478/hacq-2014-0012 NumerIcAl evAluAtIoN of grAsslands domINAted by SeSleria juncifolia Agg. in serbia Eva KABAŠ1,*, Snežana VUKOJIČIĆ1, Antun ALEGRO2, Boštjan SURINA3, Nevena KUZMANOVIĆ1, Vedran ŠEGOTA4 & Dmitar LAKUŠIĆ1 Abstract Phytosociological and numerical analyses of grasslands dominated by Sesleria juncifolia s.l. in Serbia were per- formed in order to resolve their syntaxonomy and nomenclature. Twelve relevés were sampled on Mt. Mučanj (western Serbia), which were then compared with similar relevés from other parts of the Balkan Peninsula by means of numerical analyses. The relevés were classified using cluster analysis, while the ordination was con- ducted using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). The results suggest the occurrence of two floristi- cally well defined Dinaric associations in Serbia: Seslerio juncifoliae-Edraianthetum graminifolii ass. nova from Mt. Mokra Gora (Oxytropidion urumovii, Elyno-Seslerietea) and Diantho petraeae-Seslerietum juncifoliae ass. nova (Chrysopogono-Saturejion, Festuco-Brometea) from Mt. Mučanj. Key words: Balkan Peninsula, classification, ordination, Seslerietum juncifoliae s.l., syntaxonomy, vegetation. Izvleček Naredili smo fitocenološko in numerično analizo travišč v katerih prevladuje vrsta Sesleria juncifolia s.l. in pred- stavili sintaksonomske in nomenklaturne rešitve. Dvanajst vegetacijskih popisov smo naredili na gori Mučanj (zahodna Srbija) in jih z numeričnimi metodami primerjali s podobnimi popisi z drugih delov Balkanskega polotoka. Popise smo klasificirali s klastrsko metodo, za ordinacijo smo uporabili korespondenčno analizo z odstranjenim trendom (DCA). Rezultati kažejo na obstoj dveh floristično dobro utemeljenih dinarskih en- demičnih asociacij v Srbiji: Seslerio juncifoliae-Edraianthetum graminifolii ass. nova z Mokre Gore (Oxytropidion urumovii, Elyno-Seslerietea) in Diantho petraeae-Seslerietum juncifoliae ass.
