I explore a number of related questions concerning this legend: its development and dissemination throughout this geographi# area+ the meanings it conveys for its traditional audiences and performers, and its afterlife in contemporary media and literature4 The first chapter provides an overvie! of all the known versions of The Mermaid Legend, demographi# information about storytellers and colle#tors, its typi#al forms, and the motifs or subtypes whi#h are subje#t to geographi# variation. I argue that the legend originated in Ireland or Gaeli# S#otland and spread from Gaeli# S#otland to Shetland and Orkney, and from there to the rest of the Norse world. My se#ond chapter explores the relationship bet!een The Mermaid Legend and other Irish and S#ottish traditions about seals and mermaids4 I conclude that they represent a stable body of belief concerning s$#h beings+ and relate to broader concerns about the relationship bet!een humans and their environment. In my third chapter, I explore medie)al and early modern Irish literary depi#tions of seals and mermaids4 i) The fourth chapter explores the question of the possible functions and meanings of the legend, at both the colle#tive and individual le)el. I in#lude t!o individual case studies of versions of the legend re#orded from storytellers with large repetoires and s$"fi#ient biographi#al information: Éamonn a Búrc of Carna+ County Gal!ay, and Peig Sayers of Dún Chaoin, County ;erry. In the fi"th and final chapter, I explore a number of films and literary works by Irish #reators whi#h retell or dra! inspiration from this legend. I explore both the relationship bet!een these creators and oral tradition, as well as the ways in whi#h the legend is adapted to address #ontemporary issues and debates about transnationalism, gender, the environment, and more4 ) Table of Contents Abstra#t4444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444iii Table of Contents44444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444) Abbre)iations Used44444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444vii A#kno!ledgements4444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444ix edi#ation44444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444xii 0. ENEAS MACKAY, STIRLING 1911 PRINTKD AT THE " NORTHERN OHRONIOLB " OFFICE, INYBRNESS PREFACE The following Etymology of the Principal Gaelic ISTational Names, Personal Names, and Surnames was originally, and still is, part of the Gaelic EtymologicaJ Dictionary by the late Dr MacBain. The Disquisition on Ptolemy's Geography of Scotland first appeared in the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, and, later, as a pamphlet. The Publisher feels sure that the issue of these Treatises in their present foim will confer a boon on those who cannot have access to them as originally published. They contain a great deal of information on subjects which have for long years interested Gaelic students and the Gaelic public, although they have not always properly understood them. Indeed, hereto- fore they have been much obscured by fanciful fallacies, which Dr MacBain's study and exposition will go a long way to dispel. • The Adorabyssal Oracle
THE ADORABYSSAL ORACLE The Adorabyssal Oracle is an oracle deck featuring the cutest versions of mythological, supernatural, and cryptozoological creatures from around the world! Thirty-six spooky cuties come with associated elements and themes to help bring some introspection to your day-to-day divinations and meditations. If you’re looking for something a bit more playful, The Adorabyssal Oracle deck doubles as a card game featuring those same cute and spooky creatures. It is meant for 2-4 players and games typically take 5-10 minutes. If you’re interested mainly in the card game rules, you can skip past the next couple of sections. However you choose to use your Adorabyssal Deck, it is my hope that these darkly delightful creatures will bring some fun to your day! WHAT IS AN ORACLE DECK? An Oracle deck is similar to, but different from, a Tarot deck. Where a Tarot deck has specific symbolism, number of cards, and a distinct way of interpreting card meanings, Oracle decks are a bit more free-form and their structures are dependent on their creators. The Adorabyssal Oracle, like many oracle decks, provides general themes accompanying the artwork. The basic and most prominent structure for this deck is the grouping of cards based on elemental associations. My hope is that this deck can provide a simple way to read for new readers and grow in complexity from there. My previous Tarot decks have seen very specific interpretation and symbolism. This Oracle deck opens things up a bit. It can be used for more general or free-form readings, and it makes a delightful addition to your existing decks.

  • Genre and Identity in British and Irish National Histories, 1541-1691
“NO ROOM IN HISTORY”: GENRE AND IDENTIY IN BRITISH AND IRISH NATIONAL HISTORIES, 1541-1691 A dissertation presented by Sarah Elizabeth Connell to The Department of English In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of English Northeastern University Boston, Massachusetts April 2014 1 “NO ROOM IN HISTORY”: GENRE AND IDENTIY IN BRITISH AND IRISH NATIONAL HISTORIES, 1541-1691 by Sarah Elizabeth Connell ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities of Northeastern University April 2014 2 ABSTRACT In this project, I build on the scholarship that has challenged the historiographic revolution model to question the valorization of the early modern humanist narrative history’s sophistication and historiographic advancement in direct relation to its concerted efforts to shed the purportedly pious, credulous, and naïve materials and methods of medieval history. As I demonstrate, the methodologies available to early modern historians, many of which were developed by medieval chroniclers, were extraordinary flexible, able to meet a large number of scholarly and political needs. I argue that many early modern historians worked with medieval texts and genres not because they had yet to learn more sophisticated models for representing the past, but rather because one of the most effective ways that these writers dealt with the political and religious exigencies of their times was by adapting the practices, genres, and materials of medieval history. I demonstrate that the early modern national history was capable of supporting multiple genres and reading modes; in fact, many of these histories reflect their authors’ conviction that authentic past narratives required genres with varying levels of facticity.
