Søren Larsen © James D Parbery 2020-2021 This Edition 22 March 2021
TIMELINE Søren Larsen © James D Parbery 2020-2021 this edition 22 March 2021 The Danes have been building wooden ships since long before the Viking Era (c.790-1100 AD) and passing on skills from father to son while refining the method and ship design through the centuries. The principal building material, oak, was seriously depleted in most European countries by the late 19th century except in Denmark where oak forests were well managed at the initiative of King Frederich VI 1768 – 1839. Consequently wooden ship building in Denmark continued well into the 20th century. Søren Larsen, launched in 1948, was one of the last of these ships built in the 20th century for commercial cargo - a Baltic trader or sejlede paket (sailing packet) as the Danes called it. The builders, Søren Larsen og Sønners, named the ship after themselves as she was exceptionally well built and the last of a kind - a ship they could name with pride. Søren Larsen now has a rich history spanning almost seventy-five years and has sailed every ocean. She is in excellent condition, still sailing, currently based in Sydney, Australia. If readers have more information, articles, photographs etc to offer please contact James Parbery; [email protected] . 1 of 23 TIMELINE Søren Larsen © James D Parbery 2020-2021 this edition 22 March 2021 THE DANISH YEARS - CARGO SHIP 1948 - 1976 1945 May 5 End of Second World War; Denmark is liberated from German occupation. Battery - Operated Ferries in Norway
Battery - operated ferries in Norway A study of the possibilit y for electrification of ferry routes in Norway Candidate name: Kristine Moe University College of SoutheastNorway Faculty of Technologyand Maritime Sciences M ASTER THESIS May 2016 BATTERY-OPERATED FERRIES IN NORWAY Abstract The world’s first all-electric car ferry “Ampere” has been operating the ferry route Lavik – Oppedal as one of three ferries in over a year. The ferry was introduced as a start of a revolution of green shipping in Norway. The Norwegian Government’s goal for climate changes is to have proximate zero emission from the transport sector within 2050. This goal must be halfway reached by 2030. Ferry routes, which are an important part of the Norwegian transport, are the largest contributors for the emission from ships in Norway. This thesis consists mostly of an analysis of a selection of ferry routes that are adequate for electrification based on 4 criteria’s; length of the route, complexity, weather- exposure and traffic basis. The power requirement for an all-electrical ferry is estimated for ferries with a service speed of 12 knots and a capacity of 120 cars. For ferry routes that have a passage time of more than 30 minutes hybrid solutions must be considered. The power grid on each quay needs to be upgraded to be able to supply sufficient power. 12% of the ferry routes already have the necessary available effect, but the majority of the routes that are adequate for electrification have a need for reconstruction that will cost between 5 and 20 million NOK. -

Hatteland1,2, Steffen Roth1,3, Arild Andersen4, Kristin Kaasa1‡, Bente Støa5 and Torstein Solhøy1 Hatteland BA, Roth S, Andersen A, Kaasa K, Støa B and Solhøy T. 2013. Distribution and spread of the invasive slug Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon in Norway. Fauna norvegica 32 13-2. The present distribution of the invasive slug Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon was studied in Norway. This important pest species has spread to many parts of Europe during the last decades, inflicting damage to agriculture and domestic gardens. It was first recorded in Norway in 1988, and has since spread to many parts of the country and is now recorded in 192 municipalities. We surveyed the cur- rent distribution by sampling and gathering species records in cooperation with garden societies and local authorities. Based on these records, we present distributional data as well as relative predictions of future distributions based on geoclimatic parameters. Currently, A. vulgaris covers most of coastal southern Norway while it shows a patchy distribution in northern Norway, recorded as far north as Finnsnes in Troms County. doi 10.5324/fn.v31i0.1473.
