AM Mas, mas, mas: éste es el «leit-motiv» de mis introducciones a cada una de las convocatorias del Concurso Internacional de Piano Paloma O’Shea. Este año se une al Concurso la conmemoración del «Año Rubinstein», que explica Enrique Franco, y es urgente señalar la generosidad de la viuda del gran pianista al crear y dotar un premio Chopin en recuerdo del músico preferido por el gran pianista. Figura también en la convocatoria la «Fundación Isaac Albéniz», nacida al calor del Concurso y de los Cursos, y con fin concreto y necesario: la ayuda a los jóvenes músicos, y al decir «músicos» quiero señalar que no se trata sólo de pianistas, sino que ordena sus propósitos a ayudar a las vocaciones musicales desde edad muy temprana. En este sentido, es necesario llamar la atención sobre el eco que aún suena de nuestro primer Curso de Música de Cámara, experiencia a repetir y perfeccionar. Era muy alegre que en el campus de la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo se oyeran violines y violonchelos: algunos de ellos tocaban «en compañía» por primera vez. El conjunto de premios supone para el ganador dar conciertos en casi todas las partes del mundo; un precioso capítulo es la actuación con la London Symphony, previo como siempre a la presentación con las orquestas de Madrid y Barcelona. Además, los otros premios tienen igualmente preparados intersantes conciertos. Smith This dissertation, “Grassroots Ecumenism: Christianity and Decolonization in France and Algeria, 1940-1965” is the first major study of how French Protestant and Catholic engagement in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962) reshaped Christianity in the modern world and influenced global religious movements like Ecumenical Movement and Vatican II. The moral questions that surfaced during the Algerian War, including the French military’s use of torture, the repression of civilian populations, and debates about the legitimacy of the Algerian nationalist positions forced Christians across the world to rethink the role of Christianity in imperialism and its future in a postcolonial world. This dissertation examines the shifting dynamics of Christianity’s role in the French empire, from the role that Christianity played in supporting the moral foundations for French colonialism in Algeria, to the ways in which Social Christianity, which emerged in France in the 1930s and 40s, undermined these same moral arguments, including the belief that French colonialism was both benevolent and the only means through which Christian interests could be protected in Algeria.

After studying the piano privately with Alessandro Longo, and harmony and composition with Camillo de Nardis and Paolo Serrao at the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella, Naples, he attended the Leipzig Conservatory where he completed his composition studies with Salomon Jadassohn. He worked all over Europe as a touring pianist before returning to Italy where he eventually settled in San Remo. He held several academic positions: first as a teacher of composition and then director at the Liceo Musicale, Bologna, then as director of the Liceo Musicale (later Conservatory) of Turin and professor of operatic studies at the Conservatorio di San Cecilia, Rome. As a composer, he speacialized in opera but also produced ballets, orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. He is best known for having completed Puccini’s "Turandot." While the “French School” has been characterized by a preoccupation with tone, a standard repertoire, and set of teaching materials written by Paris Conservatoire professors, no such definition can yet be set forth for the “American School.” This document provides a clear starting point for research into the what, where, why, and how of the “American Flute School” by first identifying who is associated with that school. By tracing the lineage of transverse flute playing from teacher to student through the past 300 years, we may identify orchestral flutist, soloist, and teacher, Georges Barrère, as a primary influence upon American flute playing. Barrère and his students – and his students’ students – have taught approximately 91% of all living flutists in the United States today. Of that vast number, approximately 87% can trace their heritage (through one or more of their teachers) to Barrère student William Kincaid, renowned flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and pedagogue at the Curtis Institute of Music. It is important to note that most modern musicians study with more than one teacher over the course of their career (usually between three and eight).
