CERTIFICATE in Gender and Peacebuilding

UPEACE Certi cate Programmes are designed for candidates who would like to take part in the UPEACE campus life and learning environment, but are unable to do so for an entire year. These may be working professionals or undergraduate students in the eld of and Conict Studies in their nal year of study, who are interested in a study abroad opportunity. These certi cates are designed to deepen participants' knowledge in the topic of their choice. They are deliberately exible, allowing for a hybrid option that incorporates both on-campus and online learning modalities.

Certi cates incorporate eleven or twelve credits worth of courses, depending on the modality that best suits each participant (number of on-campus vs. online credits). Diplomas are earned by completing all certi cate requirements, in addition to an independent research project.

IS IT FOR YOU? Are you a peace practitioner working with local or international organizations and want to understand more about how gender issues should be considered in peace and conict situations? Or are you an undergraduate student in your nal years of a Peace and Conict Studies degree who would like to increase your knowledge and skills in relation to gender issues?

Do you envision yourself involved in peacebuilding and peacekeeping eorts while being conscious of gender sensitivities surrounding this work?

Do you want to study the systemic nature of gendered inequalities through an intersectional lens and explore them in connection with other systems of oppression (such as those based on race; ethnicity; religion; ability; and class, among others)?

Do you want to enroll for a program that supports you in engaging with scholarly debates within the eld of Gender and Peacebuilding at a global university where students and faculty members are drawn from every corner of the world?

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? The Gender and Peacebuilding certi cate programme will allow you to delve into a rigorous scheme of studies. This programme has been designed to nurture your critical thinking abilities, foster your research skills, and to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to be an intersectional scholar who is being mindful of the gendered dimensions of conict transformation and peacebuilding. Through this program, you will:

• Be familiarized with the current theoretical and practical debates and trends within the eld of Gender and Peacebuilding • Understand gender mainstreaming as it applies to local, national and global issues • Engage with research that enables you to critically analyze gender as it manifests itself in a variety of contexts • Apply an intersectional gendered lens to conict situations

COURSES This certi cate programme in Gender and Peacebuiliding consists of 11-12 credits, which can be distributed between face-to-face and online courses. Please nd an example of a customized programme below:

First Semester Programme:

• Gender and Peacebuilding (3 credits) • 3 additional credits oered by the Gender and Peacebuilding Programme • 3 credits oered by the Peace and Conict Studies Department on campus, of the student’s choice • UN System (2 on-campus credits) or 2-3 credits of online courses

Second Semester Programme:

• 6 credits oered by the Gender and Peacebuilding Programme • Tools for Conict Resolution and Transformation [either online (2 credits) or on campus (3 credits)] / Gender and Sexuality: Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (2 online credits) • 3 on-campus credits oered by the Peace and Conict Studies Department or 3-4 credits of online courses, of the student’s choice

WHERE WILL YOU BE STUDYING? This certi cate is oered by the internationally-recognized Department of Peace and Conict Studies of the . As a leading center of peace and conict research and education, the department oers M.A. programmes in International Peace Studies, Media and Peace, Gender and Peacebuilding, and . It caters to a diverse, global body of students. Instruction is provided by a group of leading scholars and expert practitioners in the eld.

The University for Peace - established by the UN General Assembly in 1980 - has been training leaders for peace for the past four decades. It is the world’s leading educational institution in the eld of peace and conict resolution in its pursuit of the mandate given to it by the General Assembly, namely "to provide humanity with an international institution of higher education for peace and with the aim of promoting among all human beings the spirit of understanding, tolerance and peaceful coexistence, to stimulate cooperation among peoples and to help lessen obstacles and threats to world peace and progress, in keeping with the noble aspirations proclaimed in the Charter of the ."

HOW TO APPLY?

Once you have read through all of the Certi cate Prospectus and chosen your programme, you are ready to apply! Click on Apply Now on the main page to begin the application process. Please take note of your application code before you begin lling out the form. The online application will automatically save your progress as you advance through the screens, but you will need this code to return to an un nished application. Once your Application has been submitted, the Admissions Team will review it and inform you of your admissions status. Once you’ve been accepted at UPEACE, make sure to review your Admissions Package and ll out the necessary documentation to complete your enrolment. Once your rst payment has been submitted, UPEACE will contact you regarding your visa application and housing options. This certicate programme allows participants to customize their learning experience. Participants can choose how many face-to-face vs. online courses they wish to take, depending on their availability to travel to our main campus in Costa Rica.
