The team announced its decision to participate in the IndyCar Series on March 11, and entered its first race – the Indy 200 Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway – a scant 11 days later. Fernández Racing was formed in the fall of 2000 after Fernández, who drove to a second-place finish in the CART championship that year with Patrick Racing, and motorsports veteran Tom Anderson, formerly managing director of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, decided to combine forces. In three short months, Fernández Racing grew into a two-car team which made its open-wheel racing debut in 2001. Last year, Fernández Racing enjoyed its best season to date. Fernández scored his first win in his dual role as an owner/driver, and ended the CART season with 13 consecutive points-paying finishes to secure eighth place in the final championship standings. Fernández Racing is the sister team of Super Aguri Fernández Racing, which was formed in December of 2002 by ex-Formula One driver Aguri Suzuki, the Super Aguri Company and Adrián Fernández, Fernández Racing. Super Aguri Fernández Racing fields Japanese rookie talent Kosuke Matsuura [Kohs-kay Mat-sur-ah] in the #55 Panasonic ARTA Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone entry. Both teams operate out of a brand new 27,000 square foot race shop in Indianapolis. 3 Team Overview (continued) TEAM PERFORMANCE CHART (CART – CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES COMPETITION) Year Driver Sponsor/Car Engine/Chassis Wins Poles Top 5 Top 10 Top Finish Standing 2003 Adrián Tecate/Quaker State/ Ford-Cosworth/Lola 1 1 4 11 1st 8th Fernández Telmex 2002 Adrián Tecate/Quaker State/ Honda/Lola 0 2 2 7 2nd 14th Fernández Telmex Shinji Alpine/Mitsuba Honda/Lola 0 0 2 6 4th 17th Nakano Max Tecate/Quaker State/Honda/Lola 0 0 0 0 14th 19th Papis* Telmex Luis Tecate/Quaker State/Honda/Lola 0 0 0 0 19th 23rd Diaz* Telmex 2001 Adrián Tecate/Quaker State/ Honda/Reynard 0 0 3 5 3rd 18th Fernández Telmex Shinji Avex/Alpine Honda/Reynard 0 0 0 2 8th 26th Nakano Totals 1 3 11 31 *Max Papis substituted for the injured Fernández at Mid-Ohio and Fontana, and Luis Diaz substituted at Mexico City. 4 Team Partners Quaker State Quaker State Group Mexico provides quality lubricants to both the commercial and consumer markets.
