3:00Pm at Landmark Ford in Tualatin. Shop Tour to Aldridge Motorsports 1 February, 2018 Join us at the next club meeting, February 18, 3:00pm at Landmark Ford in Tualatin. Shop tour to Aldridge Motorsports Denny and Pam Aldridge threw out the welcome mat for SAAC NW on Feb 3rd and we had a great time. From the awesome line-up of engines on display as we walked in, the historical photos on the walls, and Ludicrous Speed Racing’s AC Cobra still on display, there was a lot to see! Denny intro- duced us to Jim and Hank Bothwell, both members of the Ludicrous team, as he talked about racing the gold Holman & Moody mustang and the Cobra in vintage racing events. Lots of questions kept Denny busy for a good portion of the time. We reluctantly had to leave for lunch, 30 minutes later than planned. Thank you Pam and Denny for hosting our group. It was a FUN event !! 2 3 Dan Gurney’s recent passing brought about a lot of great tributes. This is a quick historical review of the impact he had on auto racing. Created back in 2014. This film was shown at the Edison-Ford Medal Tribute presentation to Mr. Gurney. I enjoyed it a lot!. Catch it HERE. A quick Google search for “Dan Gurney cars” brought back a crazy long list of cars he drove “Gurney Flap” Original Gumball rally “Champagne spraying.” A Tribute to Dan Gurney and his All American Racers company. Watch an old Speed Channel video about the F1 win at Spa in 1967. ( warning 22 minutes long) Find it HERE. 4 SpaceX made the news Feb 6 with the launch of its new heavy rocket design test flight. SpaceX owner, Elon Musk, lifted his Tesla car name to unprecidented heights too, by send a red Tesla Roadster into an orbit to Mars. The car was used as ‘payload’ weight for the launch test.. Youtube had a couple of cool video clips of two of the main booster rockets returning to the launch area and landing cleanly. Pretty awesome. ...of course the song “Rocket Man” was played while the remote video of Starman calmly driving his car off into space was broadcast. Telsa now has the fast- est electric car too! Like the Fer- rari driver in one of the CANNON- BALL mov- ies, Starman won’t really be needing any of his mirrors ei- ther. Don’t Forget! 5 Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, always a good show. There were a few Shelby items sold, and folks enjoying the show. Notice who is standing on the stage under Craig Jackson! In a truly dominating effort, the Ford EcoBoost-powered Ford GTs dominated in a race that set a record for distance covered, to seal their back-to-back victories in the prestigious event. The win was special, as it marks team owner Chip Ganassi’s 200th victory in major league auto racing, and the Ford GT’s second consecutive Rolex 24 at Daytona triumph. One or the other Ford GT led for all but nine of the 783 laps completed by the GTLM race cars, with the No. 66 leading the charge for around 21 hours. However, the 66’s final driver change of the race – from Bourdais to Hand – took a bit longer than planned because of a missed gear change, handing the lead to the No. 67. “You always want to be the guy or the car that wins on a two-car team,” said Joey Hand after the race. “But for the program, it just goes to show that we had two flawless cars. I’ve never seen two cars run nose-to-tail for a whole 24 hours like we did. That just goes to show what these Ford Chip Ganassi Racing guys are capable of. So, a year and a half ago the original Bullitt stunt car was found in Mexico, and is being restored.. ( With or with- out dents? I’m just wondering.:) Anyway, the Kiernan family that owned the other Bullitt mustang movie car was keeping quiet, until it become pretty well rumored that Ford was planning another build of bullitt mustangs in celebration of the 50th anni- versary of the movie. (50 years !!! Holy cow. How can it possibly be?) The Kiernan family and Ford got to- gether so the ‘hero’ Bullitt would be present with the new Bullitt at the new cars’ introduction at the Detroit Auto Show back on Jan 12th. Sean Kiernan shared the story with Jay Leno during one of the recent “Leno’s Garage” segments. See that segment HERE. See a fun new take on the Bullitt mustang/ black charger competition starring granddaughter Molly McQueen HERE ..and a follow-up video of Molly meeting the original Bullitt car her granddad drove in the movie HERE You can also find video of the full Ford reveal in Detroit. It was pretty good. too! ****************************************************************************************************************** Now the question many mustang followers are asking. “What will be the next big mustang to be discovered?” another prototype like “Little Red” or ??? 12 It’s a new year. Remember your 2018 membership fees are due. Send your $36 to Dan Jones if you haven’t already done so. Be sure and in- clude any address changes, phone # updates and cars that have been added to or deleted from your garage. Maybe one of us will be adding this next year ! :) :) :) The biggest seller during the Barrett-Jackson auction last month in Scottsdale was this 2017 Ford GT. The car was donated by Ron Pratte to benefit a charity. The $2.5 million dollar winning bid was from the Larry Miller Family. They then sent the car to Boulder to join the display at the Shelby Museum. How cool is that! So if you make your way to Boulder, Co. stop by the museum for a look...and also take a peak at the GT350 one of us is going to win :) 13 2018 SAAC-NW club and car stuff to plan for: Mar 8-11 Shelby Bash in Las Vegas. The Orange Times Bruce McLaren Trust June / July 2014, Issue #2 Farewell Sir Jack 1926 - 2014 Along with the motorsport fraternity worldwide I was extremely saddened to th hear of Sir Jack’s recent passing on the 19 May. The McLaren family and Jack have shared a wonderful life-long friendship, starting with watching his early racing days in New Zealand, then Pop McLaren purchasing the Bobtail Cooper from Jack after the NZ summer racing season of 1957. For the following season of 1958, Jack made the McLaren Service Station in Remuera his base and brought the second Cooper with him from the UK for Bruce to drive in the NZIGP which culminated in Bruce being awarded the Celebrating 50 Years of “Driver to Europe”. Jack became his mentor and close friend and by 1959 McLaren Racing Bruce joined him as teammate for the Cooper Racing Team. The rest, as we say, is history but the friendship lived on and the BM Trust Following on from their Tasman Series was delighted to host Jack in New Zealand for a week of motorsport memories success, the fledgling BMMR Team set about in 2003 with Jack requesting that the priority of the trip was to be a visit to their very first sports car race with the Zerex see his “NZ Mum” Ruth McLaren, who, by then, was a sprightly 97 years old. th Special – on April 11 1964 at Oulton Park and I shared a very special hour with the two of them together and the love and this was a DNF/oil pressure.

  • Sanctioning Bodies
Sanctioning Bodies Tyrants used to love American automobile racing and so did demagogues, idealists, fat cats, laissez-faire capitalists, doomsayers, and saviors. Making matters worse, back in the 20th century such dangerous creatures were famous for banding together for mass hallucinations and the free exchange of fancy. Terrible things happened to racing whenever they did. They had it pretty good, did those racers of the early 20th century, who were free to race as they wished, without sanctioning bodies ordering them around. But by the 1920s racing was in crisis. The contest board of the powerful American Automobile Association, most feared and probably worst of all sanctioning bodies, had steered racing to the brink of a precipice. Its over-developed Millers and Duesenbergs tended to run flawlessly or blow up from the stress, and, in either case, were traveling much too fast for sanity and safety on the bricked surface of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, to say nothing of the AAA’s tournament of even faster board tracks. Operating costs were out of control, and a clique egotistical fat cat racing car owners had matters firmly under their thumb. And although the stated purpose of the Indy 500 was to further development the automobile, the only piece of advanced technology to spew forth from the Hoosier laboratory of speed had been the rear-view mirror. The Great Depression of the 1930 ameliorated a lot of this, cutting the speeds and putting an end to the supercharged Millers and Duesenbergs, wiping out the fat cats, bankrupting all the looming lumber bowls, and almost doing the same thing to the Indy 500.

  • Charisma Kills
Charisma Kills Charisma kills. Nobody can say for sure, but it seems likely that having the captivating and swashbuckling moniker “Swede Savage” led to the former motorcyclist’s death in the 1973 Indy 500. Similarly, the demise a quarter of a century earlier of Ralph Hepburn - another lion of the motor-bike who came pirouetting into car racing – surely had something to do with all that powerful charisma that Hepburn belatedly and lethally attained. “Be careful” was the poignant, and last, message Swede Savage relayed to Eddie Wirth, his closest racing associate, who later successfully took up sprint car racing. It was a highly unusual piece of advice which Wirth surely never had followed. But Swede never had either. Swede Savage’s story started in the mid-1960s. Taking his motorcycle rite of passage at the nighttime hall of valor known as Ascot Park Speedway, the Ascot announcer Roxy Rockwood shouted his catchy name into the night. Dan Gurney heard the name and responded – first in admiration, then in friendship. Gurney at this time was just about the hottest racing personality America had going: Formula 1 and Le Mans 24-hours winner and proprietor of All- American Racers, his very own Indy car team and Eagle-building works, backed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s millions and millions of dollars. Meanwhile, Swede Savage’s own motorcycle-racing life was souring. In the Midwest, on a street outside a bike emporium, he ran a Montessa head-on into a car. Head injuries are tricky, and his recovery was protracted. Next he got the opportunity that made his fame and radically shortened his life.
