Ohio 43231 Dear Friends: 614-899-9919 "Art isn't easy..." so wrote Stephen Sondheim for the character of Georges Seurat in the musical, Sunday in the Park. I can't help but wondering if Georges was alive today what he would think of the current political climate towards the arts. Many individuals profess utter disbelief in the level of Mortgage Loans attention given to "controversial" art by the Jesse Helms' and Pat Buchanan's of the country. Why aren't they confronting the real issues which we all face on a daily basis: the homeless, AIDS, intolerance, the economy? But perhaps Helms and Buchanan are aware of something we tend to forget: * Residential art embodies ideas and emotions and can move the human spirit far greater than war or weapons. It's the "difficult art" that strikes fear into the hearts of radical conservatives, whether it be Debussy's Afternoon of a Faun or Mapplethorpe's X,Y,Z Portfolios. Beverly Sills has stated, "Art is the * Investment Properties signature of civilization." Long after entire cultures have disappeared off the face of the earth, what are they most remembered for - their battles and conquests? Hardly. We remember them through their art - their music, * Refinances literature, and artifacts. This evening we are bringing you challenging works which we hope will both entertain and enlighten you. For me, that's what distinguishes "art" from simple "entertainment." Enjoying art is not a passive experience: it requires participation on the part of the viewer. In our world of instant gratification and "sound bites," I fear the magic and joy of attending a live arts event is becoming a difficult process Tor today's audience member. But if you are willing to stretch a little, I think you will find tonight's program most enjoyable. Nearly all the composers of the works you will hear are (or were) gay or identified as being gay. How they express their sexuality in their music, particularly their words, is quite fascinating. From the double entendres of Cole Porter's lyrics...to Britten's graphic ballad of spousal infidelity...to the cry for human rights in Open Wide Your Eyes-you will find Efficient, STEVE WAGNER keen insights if you ponder beyond the literal meaning of the text. Even a song like Somewhere takes on new depth when performed by a gay men's chorus. professional, But enough about tonight! What's happening with the CGMC? At the end of the month, the Chorus will board two planes for Denver, Colorado where we will be part of GALA Festival IV. Over 4,000 gay and lesbian singers from around the world will be in attendance at this ten-day event. We are proud to be representing Columbus, Ohio. Finally, another part of our mission is starting to materialize. We are now receiving invitations to appear before general audiences simply because we perform beautiful music. We just performed outdoors at the Columbus Arts call: Steve Wagner 899-9919 Festival in Bicentennial Park and we will be performing in the fall at AmeriFlora. Columbus' Only On behalf of the board and all the members I want to offer my deepest thanks for your support. Who would have thought we'd make it through two "Family-Owned" seasons?!!
