Introduction
This dissertation originated at the suggestion of Drs. Kenneth Abbott and William R. Jones of the Depart ment of Classical Languages at the Ohio State University, who are now engaged in the compilation of an Index Verbo- rum of the plays of Euripides. For this index, a basic text and an additamentum ad apparatum criticum were necessary. An index verborum of an author presents a listing of each occurrence of every word appearing in the works of that author. The basic text is that text from which these listings are taken and must therefore be one that is edited by a very competent scholar. Furthermore, It is desirable that this text be as recent as possible so that the newest critical material may have been appraised by the editor and presented in his apparatus oritlcus. The apparatus critious Is a recording of the variant readings In the manuscripts of an author and ' the emendations made upon the text. An add 11 amen turn ad ap paratum criticum is, as the name implies, an addition to the apparatus crltlcus of a given text, offering new criti cal material which has been published since the appearance of that text. The basic text which Drs. Abbott and Jones have chosen for the Index Verborum of Euripides* extant plays is that of G-ilbert Murray. The fragments, however, present a pro— xxii blem, for the best edition is that of A. Nauclc, the second edition of which was published over sixty years ago. In the meantime, the fragments have received much critical study by such competent: scholars as Wecklein, Wilamowitz, Busche, Arnim, Blaydes, G-oossens and Weil, to mention only a few. Moreover*, hundreds of lines from these lost plays have been recovered, both from palimpsests and from papyri from the sands of Egypt. Some of the papyri, indeed, are mere pen scratches; others are surprisingly extensive. The purpose which I set myself in undertaking this dissertation was to gather together all of these newly discovered fragments, Incorporate them into those of Nauck 1 s edition, write an additamentum to Nauck*s ap paratus criticus. and finally, to present an Index Verborum in Eurlpidls Pragmenta* As I became engaged in preparing a bibliography, It became apparent that the entire projeot could not be completed within the limits of time and space appropriate to a doctoral dissertation. The vast amount of material and the time at my disposal forced me to limit myself to the completion of the first half of the work, the compilation of the addltamentum. Even in this I was deceived in my purpose and consequently had to content myself in presenting as my dissertation a careful consideration of a large part of the critical material on the traditional fragments and a limited exa mination of the papyri and other* recently acquired fragtf* x: Iii ments enough., howeverj to form a substantial begin ning for the addltamentum. I was able, mainly through the aid of R. A. Pack's excellent book, Greek and Latin Literary Texts from Greco- Roman Egypt, to examine the publications of every papyrus which has been ascribed to the lost plays of Euripides, and to read some of the critical material on these papyri which Pack has listed. Concerning the traditional frag ments, I investigated all of the most important material which I could acquire covering the period from lS>g>9 t;o around 1 9 ^5 > along with other articles chosen at random from 1915 on» The availability of journals and limited foreign publications did, as is frequently the case, incur dif ficulties, but through the libraries of the Universities of Ohio State and Michigan I was able to secure enough material to satisfy the requirements of this dissertation. I hope that, as soon as I am able, I may be allowed to complete the index for the fragments and also to pre pare a text which will Include all of the fragments. Nauck1s edition is the basic text for most of the fragments, but for others brought to light since the publication of Nauck's edition there was, as I have said, no basic text. This necessitated choosing a basic text for each one. I inquired into the publication of a given fragment and chose the one which best responded to my needs, 1 . e. a competent editor, a good apparatus criti- cus and if possible but not necessarily a recent publica— xxiv tion. In the choice of these basic texts, I may have been somewhat arbitrary; but most of these were chosen because they were the best, others because they were the only ones, available. For example, Snell*s treat ment of the fragments of the Alexander is certainly to be preferred to that of Gronert or Page or even Lefke. As for the Antiope. Arnim Is too rash with supplements and too careless in his treatment of the text, while Page, in presenting a text for English readers, omits too freely. For this play, Schaal was chosen because no one, in my opinion, has presented a better text. Gn the other hand, there are small fragments, such as those presented by Reitzenstein, which are available only in the editlo prlnceps. With not a few of the fragments chosen as basic texts the problem of restoring them to the plays to which they belong presented another difficulty. For example, Schadewaldt assigned to the Phrlxos the papy rus fragment (Pack 1 3 ^0 ) which I have numbered as S3 S-A and have placed with the traditional fragments of that play. In his publication Vogliano does not definitely commit himself, but offers three suggestions: the Kolchides of Sophocles, the Trlptolemus of Sophocles or the Phrlxos of Euripides. Diels favored the Kolchides and Vitelli and Robert had already agreed on the Trlpto lemus. Wilamowltz affirms that the fragment, while right XXV fully attributed to the Phrixos, was written by Sophocles. In this he is followed by Blumenthal. Pickard—Cambridge offers the suggestion that it might possibly belong to neither Sophocles nor Euripides. On the other hand Korte argues for Euripides1 Phrixoar Page agrees half-heartedly, while Maas remarks that it is rather Eurlpidean. It is evident from this account of the ascrip tions made by-these scholars that the problem does exist and is of a very delicate nature. In such a case I have reviewed the arguments of the editors and have tried to steer a middle course by adopting the view of the majority. The allocations I have made are of course only tentative and do not affect the primary function of the add!tamenturn: a rearrange ment of some of the doubtful fragments for the Index Verborum is a possibility. The following is a list of the individual basic texts (outside of Nauck) which I have used. The num bering of the fragments is that of Nauck.

If the fragment is one which appeared in Nauck Put has now been supplemented by add.itional lines, or preserves what appears to the editors as a more faith ful reading, then the number remains the same. For ex ample, Fr. 4-99 in Nauck, a three line fragment of the Melanlppe Desmotis was replaced by a papyrus which not only showed preferable readings, but also added several new lines. The basic text is that published by A. S. Hunt in 1912 in his Traglcorum G-rae corum Papyraeea. No. 6 , and appears in this Addltamentum as Fr* 4-99 on page 10£>. The notation, Pack 1 2 3 5 , refers to the number of the papyrus given by Paok. When an entirely new fragment appears, this is de noted by a letter following the number and Is usually placed after the last fragment of the play to which the new fragment has been assigned. Thus, Fr. 64—A (Pack 31g, II 3 5 )i a considerably large portion of the Alexander is placed after the traditional fragments for which Nauck' edition remains the basic text, while Snell's publication becomes the text for the new fragments»m&Thedexception to this is seen in those fragments marked by an asterisk, X X lx such as 1 3 —A, 1 3 — 0 etc*, which because of insuffi cient evidence, have been grouped in the special section (pp. 225-227) Oertarum Fabularum Fragmentls Addenda, When a new fragment replaces two or more fragments in Nauck, the fragment number is followed by the number (in paren theses) of the displaced fragments, i.e., Fr. 157 kas replaced Fr*r. 157 and 15&, both of which one line frag ments appear in the new fragment as two consecutive lines. There are 'six other papyri, an ostrabon, and an herma which I have used for collation of the respective tradi tional fragments and which offer some very interesting and sometimes better readings, but which I have not deem ed worthy enough to replace those in Nauck. My method of presenting the emendations is to give first the reading from the basic text— but only the words subject to the emendation— and then to set forth the emendations. I have usually tried to use the verse as a unit of arrangement, but when an emendation is best shown by phrases or clauses I have used these as the Unit. After, the emender*s name I have placed the date of publication of the Journal or book wherein the emenda tion is found and the page number. Following is an entry on the sixth verse of fragment 3^7:
