Located in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, Casa Vicens is the final Gaudí World Heritage site building to admit public visitors. The building was the artist’s first residential construction, built as a summer home between 1883 and 1885 for wealthy industrialist Manel Vicens. Not only was Casa Vicens the starting point of Gaudí’s career, the property is different to anything that had been built in the region previously. The construction is graphic, geometric and unique, and has undergone three years of extensive renovations in preparation for its opening as a museum. www.casavicens.org @ Casa Vicens. @ Turisme de Barcelona. • Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). Paisaje Urbano. Abstract The inclusion in the World Heritage List has been frequently assumed in Spain as a challenge to turn localities and territories into attractive destinies inside the emergent field of cultural tourism; however, the spirit of the List, that grants more responsibilities than privileges, is relegated to a background. The commitments accepted at the moment of the inclusion, among them the creation of appropriate management plans, are often forgotten or put under urban projects little respectful with heritage or even harmful to it, since their main aims are usually a pretended urban modernization or the simple real estate speculation. • Premium Wine Club
PREMIUM WINE CLUB March 2020 2015 Portal del Priorat Gotes Blanques Priorat, Spain Tiny and entirely composed of craggy, jagged and deeply terraced vineyards, Priorat is a Catalan wine-producing region that was virtually abandoned until the early 1990s. Its renaissance came with the arrival of one man, René Barbier, who recognized the region’s forgotten potential. He banded with five friends to create five “Clos” in the village of Gratallops. Their aim was to revive some of Priorat’s ancient Carignan vines, as well as to plant new—mainly French—varieties. These winemakers were technically skilled, well-trained and locally inspired; not surprisingly, their results were a far cry from the few rustic and overly fermented wines already produced. This movement escalated Priorat’s popularity for a few reasons. Its new wines were modern and made with well-recognized varieties, namely old Carignan and Grenache blended with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. When the demand arrived, scarcity commanded higher prices and as the region discovered its new acclaim, investors came running from near and far. Within ten years, the area under vine practi- cally doubled. One of Catalonia’s emerging superstars, Alfredo Arribas was a nationally renowned architect before shifting his focus to farming and winemaking fifteen years ago. He is known for making some of the most elegant wines in Priorat and Montsant. Alfredo Arribas’ Portal del Priorat estate is composed of about 150 acres in Priorat and 50 acres in Southern Montsant. Many of these vines are on original rootstock and pushing 100 years in age. Gotes translates to “droplets” in Catalan, and as you would expect, like droplets, these wines are all about freshness.
