INTRODUCTION In 1788 the British began to colonise Australiaand immediately commenced to impose their own socialand linguisticconditioning on the Aborigines. For the next twenty years Britishinfluence was confmed within the natural barriers of the coastal mountain ranges of what is now New South Wales!. However, news of the colonists and the effects of their arrival on Aborigines, especially those within the County of Cumberland, was spread along the traditional trade routes and communication networks. After 1813, the interior of NSW was opened for settlement and the consequences of the resultant contact with colonists were devastating for Aborigines throughout NSW. Gradually at first, then with increasing momentum in the 1830s as the pastoral and squatting rush began, Aborigines all over NSW had direct, if unsolicited, contact with colonists. There is an ever-increasing body of literature dealing with the social effects on NSW Aborigines of British colonisation in Australia. However, the linguistic effects have not been researched to the same extent. There are excellent studies of the traditional Aboriginal languages of NSW and of the consequences for those languages of the British colonisation of Australia. However, to date there has been no detailed study of the kinds of linguistic results which emerged out of Aboriginal contact with English in NSW. This work is offered as a fIrst contribution to the study of Aboriginal contact with English in NSW for the period beginning in 1788 - the fIrst year of British settlement in Australia- and ending in 1845 with the cessation of transportation to NSW and the beginning of major immigrant arrivals. It is recognised that the orthographic conventions, linguistic terminologies and grammatical categories used ultimately may not prove to be optimal for this fIeld of study. However, they are part of an heuristic methodology designed for this work so as to facilitate analysis and discussion of the data.

The purpose of the petition is to creatively showcase the history and culture of the local Aboriginal community along the Cooks River and to publicly acknowledge the role of Pemulwuy as “father of local Aboriginal resistance”. The action petitioned for was expressed in the following terms: “We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge Inner West Council in conjunction with Council’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Reference Group (A&TSIRG) to designate the walk between the Aboriginal Interpretive Sites along the Cooks River parks in Marrickville as the Pemulwuy Trail and produce an information leaflet to explain the sites and the Aboriginal connection to the Cooks River (River of Goolay’yari).” A total of 60 signatures have been collected on the petition attached.

    Traditional Language Used in Production 75 Traditional Language Used in Production There were several dialects spoken within the Border Rivers and Gwydir catchments. They included the Gamilaraay, Yuwalaraay and Yuwalayaay dialects as spoken by members of the Kamilaroi (Gomeroi) nation. The Nganyaywana language was spoken by members of the Anaiwan (or Eneewin) nation, whose land extends south from the border with the Banbai nation (near Guyra) towards Uralla and westward towards Tingha. Other notable languages within the area included Yukumbal (Jukumbal), from the Bundarra/Tingha/Inverell area, and Ngarabal, which was spoken around the Glen Innes area. This book uses and provides information on a few of the dialects spoken within the catchment. It is not intended for this book to be a language reference book, but the use of language names is included to help keep our language alive and for educational purposes. In some cases Aboriginal words have not been included as it has not been possible to collect detailed information on the relevant dialects. This book uses words and references primarily relating to the Gamilaraay, Yuwalaraay, Yuwalayaay, Banbai and Nganyaywana dialects (White 2010 pers. comm.). He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A. 1905, M. A. 1909), graduating with first class honours in the moral sciences tripos. He studied psychology under W. H. R. Rivers, who, with A. C. Haddon, led him towards social anthropology. Elected Anthony Wilkin student in ethnology in 1906 (and 1909), he spent two years in the field in the Andaman Islands. A fellow of Trinity (1908 - 1914), he lectured twice a week on ethnology at the London School of Economics and visited Paris where he met Emily Durkheim. At Cambridge on 19 April 1910 he married Winifred Marie Lyon; they were divorced in 1938. Radcliffe-Brown (then known as AR Brown) joined E. L. Grant Watson and Daisy Bates in an expedition to the North-West of Western Australia studying the remnants of Aboriginal tribes for some two years from 1910, but friction developed between Brown and Mrs. Bates. Brown published his research from that time in an article titled “Three Tribes of Western Australia”, The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. 43, (Jan. - Jun., 1913), pp. 143-194. At the 1914 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Melbourne, Daisy Bates accused Brown of gross plagiarism.

    12 Chapter 13: Remaking the Landscape 13.0 Remaking the landscape 13.1 Research Question The Conservatorium site is located within one of the most significant historic and symbolic landscapes created by European settlers in Australia. The area is located between the sites of the original and replacement Government Houses, on a prominent ridge. While the utility of this ridge was first exploited by a group of windmills, utilitarian purposes soon became secondary to the Macquaries’ grandiose vision for Sydney and the Governor’s Domain in particular. The later creations of the Botanic Gardens, The Garden Palace and the Conservatorium itself, re-used, re-interpreted and created new vistas, paths and planting to reflect the growing urban and economic importance of Sydney within the context of the British empire. Modifications to this site, its topography and vegetation, can therefore be interpreted within the theme of landscape as an expression of the ideology of colonialism. It is considered that this site is uniquely placed to address this research theme which would act as a meaningful interpretive framework for archaeological evidence relating to environmental and landscape features.1 In response to this research question evidence will be presented on how the Government Domain was transformed by the various occupants of First Government House, and the later Government House, during the first years of the colony. The intention behind the gathering and analysis of this evidence is to place the Stables building and the archaeological evidence from all phases of the landscape within a conceptual framework so that we can begin to unravel the meaning behind these major alterations.
