Eifel-Volcanic Museum Museums and Info centers of the European Geoparks Network VULKANEIFEL EUROPEAN GEOPARK (picture) Museum LOGO EIFEL-VOLCANIC MUSEUM One major goal of the Volcanic Museum is for visitors to closely experience volcanic activity especially regarding the geological development of the Volcanic Eifel. (picture) Educational demands have been taken into Museum consideration. Besides many informational GENERAL PHOTO displays, pictures and exhibits about the Eifel and active volcanoes in Europe and Asia, there are interactive computer models in every exhibition room. There are also displays giving an overview of: • the current distribution of land and water The building of the Eifel-Volcanic Museum and also the movement of the continents. (exterior view) • a journey through the geological history of the earth • the cycle or rather development of rocks, etc. Geological peculiarities of the Eifel can be observed with simulators, for example so-called red-hot magma can be pumped up into a typical volcanic slag cone, setting off an eruption with noise, condensation and light effects. There is also a miniature landscape of the Eifel showing surface formation, cinder deposits, various volcanic types, the Children with a model of face of a volcanic cone, volcanic forms: Maar (volcanic lake) - a volcano crater, “Wallender Born” (“seething well” near Wallenborn), etc. In the Geo-center, an informational display shows geologically important aspects of the Volcanic Eifel and its neighboring areas: Devonian new-red stone, volcanic routes, bubbling springs, mining, etc. By simply pushing a button, visitors can call up places of special interest on a map, showing its location and possible access roads. Educational area: Determining minerals with the help of a microscope or binoculars; cutting, smoothing and polishing rocks; slide and overhead projectors for lectures and seminars; videos about Geo for Kids the history of the earth, especially volcanoes; specialized literature with emphasis on the history of the Eifel; fossils from the Devonian period of the Eifel. For the first time since the improvement of the local seismic networks in the East Eifel region (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany), we detect and locate recurrent DLF earthquakes in the lower crust and upper mantle beneath the Laacher See Volcano (LSV), using a joint data set of permanent sensors and a temporary deployment.

    Quaternaire, 22, (1), 2011, p. 47-60 COMPOSITION OF TEPHRA OF THE GOLDBERG volcano (WEST EIFEL, GERMANY) AND SEARCH FOR ITS DISPERSION n Sébastien COOLS 1, Étienne JUVIGNÉ 1 & André POUCLET 2 Abstract Because of intensive exploitation of the Goldberg volcano (West Eifel Volcanic Field, Germany), in the past three decades, additional information has been obtained on its volcanological history and its products. Two important explosive events are recorded in the stratigraphic pile. An attempt is made to trace tephra of the volcano, by sampling soils in plateau position all around the volcano. However, the sampled sites also contained minerals from the Laacher See tephra that blanketed the area as demonstrated by the occurrence of a layer in the nearby Bragphenn peat bog. We performed electronic microprobe analyses, to discriminate between the pyroxenes from Goldberg and those from the Laacher See. Since the quantities of minerals drop rapidly away from the volcano, the Goldberg tephra cannot be traced beyond some 6 km. Nevertheless the dispersion is more important in westwards so that further discovery of the tephra can be expected especially in Upper Belgium. Our results allow us to shift the minimal age of the eruption from 11.6 ka BP to 25 ka BP. The latter is one of the founding members of the European Geoparks Network, which was established in 2000 at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Berlin. The main goal of the first geopark was to link geological heritage with tourism in a rural area that was trying to create new perspectives to inspire young people to stay in their home territory. Geotourism was initiated as part of sustainable tourist development and for future sustainable development at that time in the Gerolstein region. The first steps to implement the Gerolstein/Vulkaneifel Geopark, Germany, were taken in 1992. The core aspects included geological heritage, science transfer, and education as tools for developing geotourism in the broad sense and integrating local people and municipalities in the geopark activities of the rural region. Close collaboration with the local and regional tourism organizations highlighted the need to both define tools and demonstrate their success. Up to now, practice has shown that such success can be demonstrated by the infrastructure created, as well as adjacent measures and activities. A network of factors was determined to play a significant role in ensuring the successful sustainable development in a geopark across the field of geotourism. There are many activities and publications on geological heritage, geosite assessment, significance, and use, but there are fewer which reflect on the network of factors highlighted in this contribution which were first presented in 2002.

Granulite xenoliths from the Quaternary West Eifel Volcanic Field in Germany record evidence of magmatism in the lower crust at the end of the Permian. The xenoliths sampled two distinct bodies: an older intrusion (ca. 264 Myr old) that contains clinopyroxene with flat, chondrite-normalised rare earth element (REE) profiles and a younger (ca. 253 Myr old) intrusion that crystallised middle-REE-rich clinopyroxene. The younger body is also distinguished based on the negative Sr, Zr and Ti anomalies in primitive mantle-normalised multi- element plots. REE-in-plagioclase–clinopyroxene thermometry records the magmatic temperature of the xeno- liths (1100–1300 ◦C), whereas Mg-in-plagioclase and Zr-in-titanite thermometry preserve an equilibration tem- perature of ca. 800 ◦C. These temperatures, together with a model of the mineral assemblages predicted from the composition of one of the xenoliths, define the pressure of crystallisation as ∼ 1 GPa. The xenoliths also preserve a long history of reheating events whose age ranges from 220 to 6 Myr. The last of these events presumably led to breakdown of garnet; formation of symplectites of orthopyroxene, plagioclase and hercynite; and redistribu- tion of heavy rare earth elements into clinopyroxene.
