Successe in Valdichiana
Successe in Valdichiana Copyright - © - 2010 - Thesan & Turan S.r.l. -

A Decision Support System Model for the Governance of Sustainable Rural
A DSS model for the governance of sustainable rural landscape: a first application to the cultural landscape of Orcia Valley (Tuscany, Italy) Massimo Rovai - [email protected] - University of Pisa, DISAAA, Via del Borghetto, 56124 Pisa; Italy Maria Andreoli - [email protected]; University of Pisa, DISAAA, Via del Borghetto, 56124 Pisa; Italy Simone Gorelli - [email protected] – EMA srl Heikki Jussila – [email protected] – Laboratorio di Studi Rurali Sismondi . Italia 1 1. Introduction and State of the Art1 2 The European Landscape Convention (ELC) defines landscape as “an area, as perceived by 3 people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human 4 factors” and underlines that “a landscape forms a whole, whose natural and cultural components 5 are taken together, not separately” (Council of Europe, 2000). This not only asks for an 6 integration of the methodologies and approaches that concern bio-physical and socio-cultural 7 aspects, but asks also for the adoption of proper tools able to highlight the effects of human 8 activities on landscape. Indeed, as highlighted by Conrad et al. (2011a), the Explanatory Report 9 of ELC observes that landscape protection, management and planning can be a complex matter 10 necessitating multi-disciplinary work. The need for public intervention in this field derives from 11 the economic characteristics of landscape; indeed, rural landscape is a pure public good and an 12 externality (positive or negative) of farming and other economic activities that exploit and 13 modify the land. Although landscape protection could be pursued by means of “command and 14 control” policies, based on the definition of standards to be respected on land transformation, 15 nevertheless standards are usually scarcely effective and often opposed by people who suffer for 16 their implementation. -

Val D'orcia 1
VAL D’ORCIA Sweet round-shaped hills, changing colour according to the season, low valleys along the Orcia river, parish churches and restored farms here and there, often hiding in a forest of cypresses. Such are the characteristics making the charm of Val d’Orcia incomparable, an extraordinary synthesis between nature, art and deeply rooted traditions. This beautiful area of Tuscany is under the authority of the Val d’Orcia Park, instituted to maintain and develop the heritage of a region to promote its typical produce. The fertile countryside of Val d’Orcia, cultivated with respect and wisdom, produces excellent wines, olive oil and high quality cereals. The landscape is deeply marked by man’s intervention aiming to enrich the natural beauty with sobre religious and civilian works of art. It is difficult to explain with words the serene charm emanating from the lands of Val d’Orcia in the spring, when the hills turn green, in the summer when the yellow colour of sunflowers and wheat fields dominates the area, in the beautiful fragrance of a variety of plants. In the south of Bagno Vignoni, olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields are replaced by a Mediterranean bushland while in the Mount Amiata area opens out a thick forest of chestnut and beech groves. Mother Nature, especially generous with the Val d’Orcia’s people, did not forget to create thermal springs for rest and care. The Via Francigena goes through Val d'Orcia near the small village of Bagno Vignoni, visited by famous people and pilgrims. Already inhabited in the Etruscan period, the Val d’Orcia keeps architectural vestiges from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. -

In This Book I Have Not Attempted to Write the Conventional Biography Of
Introduction In this book I have not attempted to write the conventional biography of a canonized saint, but a study of Italian history centered in the work and personality of one of the most wonderful women that ever lived. While devoting my attention mainly to Catherine’s own work and influence upon the politics of her age, I have endeavored at the same time to make my book a picture of certain aspects, religious and political, of the fourteenth century in Italy. In this undertaking, I have been aided greatly by the manuscripts still preserved of Catherine’s letters, manuscripts full of unpublished matter that has been unaccountably neglected, having apparently escaped the notice of all of her previous biographers and editors. This material throws light upon every aspect of the saint’s genius and has enabled me, at many points, to correct erroneously accepted ideas about the events of her life and the order of her writings. From the very beginning, the biographical and historical value of Catherine’s letters has been, to a considerable extent, impaired by copyists (and editors who followed them) omit- ting or suppressing passages that appeared to them to be of only temporary interest, or not tending immediately toward edification. A certain number appear to have been deliberately expurgated, in cases where the writer’s burning words seemed likely to startle the susceptibilities of the faithful. This process seems to date back to the generation that immediately followed that of Catherine’s original disciples. A striking instance of this editorial suppression is seen in a certain letter that Aldo Manuzio (the editor of the second 3 RoadtoSienaFormat.indd 3 6/16/09 11:54:52 AM the road to siena edition of Catherine’s letters, published in Venice in 1500) intro- duces with the rubric: “To one whose name it is better not to write, because of certain words used in the letter.
