  • Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-819
Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-819 PDF version Ottawa, 5 November 2010 Revised content categories and subcategories for radio This regulatory policy revises the list of content categories and subcategories for radio by adding a new subcategory 36 (Experimental Music), as announced in Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-499 which sets out the new policy for campus and community radio. This regulatory policy will take effect only when the Radio Regulations, 1986 are amended to make reference to it. 1. In Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-499, which sets out the new policy for campus and community radio, the Commission announced its intention to revise the content categories and subcategories for radio by adding a new subcategory 36 (Experimental Music). The Commission indicated that, in interpreting the new definition of Experimental Music, it would rely on the definitions of musique actuelle, electro acoustic and sound ecology set out in the appendix to Broadcasting Notice of Consultation 2009- 418, as well as the Turntablism and Audio Art Study 2009, which was prepared to assist parties in preparing their comments for the review of campus and community radio. The Commission also provided clarification as to how it would measure the Canadian content of musical selections falling into this new subcategory at paragraphs 77 and 78 of Broadcasting Regulatory Policy 2010-499. 2. In order to implement this determination, the content categories and subcategories contained in the appendix to this regulatory policy, including the new definition of Experimental Music, will replace the content categories set out in the appendix to Public Notice 2000-14. The Commission will propose amendments to the Radio Regulations, 1986 for the purpose of removing all references to the appendix to Public Notice 2000-14 and replacing them with references to the appendix to this regulatory policy.

Through the stylization of image, music and sound effects, advertisers communicate an abstract concept of a brand, and instantiate the brand through an audience member’s heightened experience of the brand via the ad. Facilitated by socialized and mediatized frameworks for brand communications, branding is an embodied practice that relies on the audience member’s participation with the brand through her/his real experience with an (audiovisual) advertisement. The effect of making the abstract brand tangible relies on successfully executing advertising objectives to create “impact” through stylized and often hyperreal representations of reality.

Anthropogenic Moods: American Functional Music and Environmental Imaginaries A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Joshua J. Ottum April 2016 © 2016 Joshua J. Ottum. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Anthropogenic Moods: American Functional Music and Environmental Imaginaries by JOSHUA J. OTTUM has been approved for Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Marina Peterson Associate Professor of Performance Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT OTTUM, JOSHUA J., Ph.D., April 2016, Interdisciplinary Arts Anthropogenic Moods: American Functional Music and Environmental Imaginaries Director of Dissertation: Marina Peterson This dissertation investigates how functional music, utilitarian commercial music composed to create moods, shapes environmental imaginaries in late twentieth- and early twenty-first century America. In particular, the study considers how functional music operates in specific media contexts to facilitate sonic identifications with the natural world that imbricate nature with modalities of contemporary capitalism. As human- driven changes to the planet have ushered in the Anthropocene, an investigation of the relationships between musical sound, moods, and environments will draw out the feelings and imaginaries of the era. In doing so, this study amplifies these attenuated sounds, aiming to open the conversation to new ways of listening in an age of increasing environmental fragility. 4 DEDICATION Dedicated to Vanessa and Baby Ottum 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation is the product of explicit and implicit guidance from family, friends, and faculty. I couldn’t have asked for a better advisor in Dr.

  • Social Reforms and Classical Music in British Literature and Culture from 1870 to 1945
Music Made Meaningful: Social Reforms and Classical Music in British Literature and Culture from 1870 to 1945 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By David Henry Deutsch, M. A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Sebastian Knowles, Advisor David Adams Mark Conroy Copyright by David H. Deutsch 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines the importance of classical music portrayed in British literature as a means to indicate social worth, intellectual ability, and political identity. Most scholars of music and literature emphasize the abstract, avant-garde influence of quartets and fugues on novels and poetry, overlooking the broader cultural implications of music in Britain. This project demonstrates how, from the 1870s, authors such as Benjamin Jowett, Walter Pater and Oscar Wilde used diverse appreciations of opera and instrumental music to make socio-economic and moral distinctions, as well as to portray political cohesion through communal pleasures. Turning to literature written after 1900, I show how modernist authors such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf revised these late-Victorian themes and used an ability to understand classical music as a litmus test for determining a character‟s placement within intellectual hierarchies. To locate these literary concerns within their cultural context, I uncover how journalists depicted concerts in domestic and institutional settings to indicate the value of communities that could create and sustain an art increasingly recognized as nationally important. Having established the social significance of classical music, I detail how writers relied on musical proclivities to justify the value of alienated subcultures to the larger British populace.

We conducted focus groups in four markets where the NPR news station produced a daily local information program. As a priority for 2002, the PRPD intended to extend its Core Values research into classical music. At the same time, the Station Resource Group set its own priorities with reference to the value that listeners find in programming.
