Dear Friend:

I apologize for the form nature of this letter, but the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation ("RIOC") of the State of New York has received quite a few letters and cards from individuals who share your interest in radio communications and I find it impossible to answer each personally. The same general questions were asked by each of you, so I will list those most frequently asked and their answers. RIOC is a New York State public benefit corporation, which is responsible for the management and development of Roosevelt Island, which is located in the East River 300 yards from . We are connected to Manhattan by an aerial tramway and a subway, and to County, to our east, by a bridge. The island population is approximately ten thousand people, and the island itself is two and one quarter miles by a quarter mile.

As part of our attempts to communicate with both residents and visitors, we established a TIS radio station. It began test messages this past January and on the air in late January. The system was set up by LBP Inc. of Frazer, PA. It is at 1620 and the is WNZE748. The station operates at approximately 6 watts, with an LPB AM30 TIS transmitter and a Morad SF -1620 antenna. If there are any other questions, please feel free to write and I will answer as soon as I can.

Program Director Radio Station W H T K 30 N. Union St. Rochester, NY 14607

Dear Sir,

It is a pleasure to report that I continue to enjoy frequent reception of WHTK, Hot Talk 1280, down here in eastern Pennsylvania. When I first heard WHTK on Saturday morning, December 18, 1993, Isent a report to Contract Engineer Tim Pauly in care of your station, re- questing a confirmation of my reception, but I have failed to receive a reply. It is possible that I had obtained thewrong name. I am enclosing a copy of my original report for your information.

My most recent reception of WHTK was loggedon the morning of Tuesday, April 5, 1994, when your broadcastwas tuned in at 7:50 A.M., Eastern Daylight Time, and I continued to hear theprogram of Imus in the Morning, along with news, announcements and advertisements until 8:29 A.M., E.D.T. WHTK's signal on 1280 kiloHertz again peaked ata strong level of 20 db over 8-9 and afforded clear, enjoyableprogram reception. Fading was moderate, along with someco -channel interference, but your signal was always in command of the frequency during theperiod of my reception. As always, the modulation and speech qualitywere ex- cellent, and there was no atmospheric static. As the result of these favorable conditions, Hot Talk 1280 was received with good clarityand readability at this distance from Rochester of 205 air miles. I listen to WHTK on my Hammarlund HQ -180 communications receiver, using 18 tubes. The antenna is a Model SM-2 Space Magnet, a rotatable 12 -inch ferrite loopstick with 2 stages of preamplification. Ground connection is made to a well 175 ft. deep. I am situated in the eastern part of the State of Pennsylvania, 60 miles north of the cityof near Allentown, Pa., and 21 miles west of the hew Jersey state line.

I would be happy to receive your reply, kindly confirmingmy reception of WHTK on 1280 kiloHertz as reported above. Your verification of the fact that I heard your broadcast on Tuesday morning, April 5th, will be greatly appreciated for inclusion inmy reception records, and return postage is enclosed for your reply. As proof that I was tuned to Hot Talk 1280, I give the following log ofprogram items to which I listened:

Dear Mr. Geary,

Please excuse me for repling so late to your letter dated September 22, 1988. I feel bad enough that this September has gone by, but, to realize your letter (I had to read it twice to make sure of thedate) was dated a year ago in September, well, I really feel bad.

Your letter somehow got in with some other papers that were filed away and it just was found where it should have been. Realizing that I knew I never replied, I felt I better do it now.

After reading your letter, I had realized that I remember getting it and checking it out against our log and your right except for some minor pronunciations.

Its nice to know that someone can pick us up like you have so we know where we are transmitting to when conditions are just right. It was interesting to know that you heard us back on November 1, 1955. I believe it was around October 22, 1955 when WLSV first went on the air.

I came in 1979 and bought out WLSV in 1983.

I want to apologize again for this letter being so late. Hope you had a nice Xmas and will have a Happy New Year.

Sincerely yours,

P.S. I have enclosed your 250 stamp back because of my lateness.

Dear Mr. Geary,

Thank you very much for your letter concerning reception of WLNL. It was very interesting and quite informative. The dates and times you did mention and the program content is correct. I wish everyone in our area had reception comparable to yours.

We've been experiencing some technical problems as of late and I wonder if it's effected your reception of WLNL. We discoverd February 9th that our line equalizer -amplifier wasn't giving us our full audio potential from our transmitter. Under F.C.C. regulations we are allowed 125% power and my engineer informs me that we are only 5 65-80%.

The phone company will be replacing our equalizer -amplifier on our audio line hopefully the 26th of this month. I would appreciate it, if you would sometime the following week, tune us in and compare our signal to our previous broadcast which you monitored. Enclosed is a stamp for your reply.

Thank you again Mr. Geary, may the Lord bless you in your endeavors. Sincerely, 7

Dear Sir,

It is a pleasure to eporthat I enjoyed hearing your AM station on 1240 kiloHertz reach over here into Eastern Pennsylvania on the evening of Tuesday, November 29, 1988. WBAB-AM was tuned in at 4:34 P.M., Eastern Standard Time, and I heard a program of from "Long Island's Home of Rock -and -Roll", followed by a traffic report by Debbie Jackson and several recorded advertisements until your signal was covered by interference at 4:47 P.M., E.S.T. WBAB's signal on 1240 kiloHertz peaked at a strong S-9 level during the above period, overriding the co -channel interference with fairly good clarity at this distance from Babylon of 130 air miles. Fading was shallow, and there was no atmospheric static. The carrier was clean-cut and fully modulated, and the tonal quality was very good. It was a pleasure to hear WBAB-A. reach this distance in a clear and readable condition, and you are to be congratulated on the power and efficiency of the transmitting equipment. With the coming of sunset, however, other stations on 1240 kiloHertz began to crowd in, and your broadcast was lost in the co -channel interference at 4:47 P.M. I heard WBAB-AM on my Hammarlund HQ -180 communications receiver, using 18 tubes. The antenna is a Model SM-2 Space Magnet, a rotatable 12 -inch ferrite rod with 2 stages of preamplification. Ground connection is made to a well 175 ft. deep. I am situated in the eastern part of the State of Pennsylvania, 60 miles north of the city of Philadelphia near Allentown, Pa., and 21 miles west of the New Jersey state line.

Please confirm my reception of WBAB-AM on 1240 kiloHertz as reported above. Your verification of the fact that I heard your broadcast on the evening of Tuesday, November 29th, will be greatly appreciated. Return postage is enclosed for your reply. Dear Sir,

First off, if David Frost is still the Chief Engineer, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding letter he sent me on February 3, 1986, when I reported my first reception of your AM station as WRSG, ex-WKOP. Charlie Hallinan's WKOP QSL card was greatly appreciated, along with the photograph of the erection of the tower in 1947 and the pictures of Dave Frost at the base of the tower and with the night transmitter and antenna phasing unit. The history of WKOP was very interesting, as was the information about your present operat- ion and the fact that your major signal lobe is to the northon both your day and night patterns. It is gratifying when a radio station takes interest in a reception report, and I thankyou for this consider- ation. I hope that Dave can still find the time to dosome occasional Broadcast Band DX'ing.

I am writing now to report my reception ofyour AM station under its new call letters, WBNK. WBNK was first tuned in here on the evening of Tuesday, October 30, 1990, at 4:46 P.M., Eastern Standard Time, and I continued to hear your news and information broadcast until 4:57 P.M. WBNK was again heard on the following morning of Wednesday, October 31, 1990, between 6:30 and 6:45 A.M., E.S.T. It was interesting to learn that News Director Kathy Whyte, whom I heardon WRSG on January 27, 1986, continues to do a great job of reporting on WBNK.

WBNK's signal on both occasions peaked at a fairly strong, S-8 level which was sufficient to override the interference from other stations on 1360 kiloHertz during most of the time segments mentioned above. On Tuesday, October 30th, with semi -local WPPA, Pottsville, Pa., nulled by means of my directional receiving antenna, your broadcast dominated the frequency until 4:55 P.M. when interference began to appear from WCHL, Chapel Hill, N.C., and blocking my reception ofyour signal after 4:57 P.M. On Wednesday morning, October 31st, interference fromco -channel WMNS, Olean, N.Y., overrode your broadcast between 6:34 and 6:41 A.M. The signal strength was fairly steady at all times, and therewas no atmospheric static. The carrier was well modulated, and the tonal quality was excellent. As the result of these favorable conditions, WBNK was received with fairly good clarity and readability at this distance from Binghamton of 95 air miles.

My receiver is a Hammariund HQ -180 communications set, using 18 tubes. The antenna is a Model S'i-2 Space Magnet, a rotatable 12 -inch ferrite rod with 2 stages of preamplification. Ground connection is made to a

Dear Mr. Geary,

In response to your letter of May 2, 1972, WDLCwas conductiong frequency tests during the morning of May 1,1972 from 12:01 AM to 12:45 AM Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Itseems to me that you not only heard us, but you also received another station conducting frequency tests as well. It is common practice for a company like Cambridge Crystal to check several stations in one night. At 12:01 AMwe all go on the air and then wait to be called and haveour frequency checked. Since 1490KHz is a local channel, there are several stations in the area using that frequency. The closestone to us is WKNY in Kingston, N.Y. and I also know that there is a spanish speaking station in New York City on thissame frequency. It would also seem logical to assume that if Cambridge Crystal set its scheduals to check several stationson the same frequency on the same night, then they would have to doa lot less tuning and knob twisting. WDLC started its test at 12:01 AM with intermittant 1 KHz tone from approximately 12:20AM until the end of the test at 12:45 AM. Then we left the air and you pickedup another station on the same frequency. This is how I would explain what you heard. In answer to your question reguarding our test schedual, we are still on the monday morning quarterlyschedual with Cambridge Crystal and the next test is due at 12:01AM on august 7, 1972. Mr. Spahr is no longer with WDLCas he was called back to Cape Kennedy to get his old job back.Mr. Spahr was an aerospace systems engineer and was at WDLC duringa layoff period. We all miss him very much here. I would like to thank you for your signalreport, Mr. Geary, and I look forward to hearing fromyou again.

Dear Mr. Geary;

It is with great pleasure that I am able to confirm your report of reception of our station, WGLN and the special broadcast of the Democratic Convention on last Thursday, July 15, 1948. I regret that we do not have QSL cards but hope that this letter will serve. You are to be congratulated for the accuracy of your report and we do greatly appreciate it. I personally handled verification cards for several years for the "Voice of America in North Africa" and rarely did I receive as useful and complete a report as yours.

We are using at present a Raytheon RA -250 transmitter normally rated at 250 Watts but due to license limitations now operated at 100 Watts which is accomplished by voltage dropping resistors in the buffer and final circuits. The modulation circuit is unchanged. We use a Raytheon RL-10 liriter and a Gates 20-B console. All announce- ments and sign -off were transcribed. The antenna is a single guyed pylon 200 feet high with a radial ground system 200 feet in radius.

I am unable to give you any information as to the date of our increase In power and change of frequency. It is in the hands of the Commission but our new CP is expected in the near future.

Our Chief Engineer, Mr. Worthing and myself both wish to thank you for your excellent report and to wish you the best of luck with your very fine hobby. We have both been engaged in International Broadcast work and therefor really appreciate the work done by listeners such as your self.

Dear Kermit,

Thanks so much for the report and verification copies!

WEXT 1550 was the first station I ever visited. Knowing I was interested in broadcasting, my folks called a number of the sta- tions near our Connecticut home for a tour. All were too busy for such kids... except for WEXT. My Dad dropped me off at WEXT's basement studio, and picked me up some 7 or 8 hours later. Wow, did I learn a bunch about real radio!

The WZZZ I was interested in,was the Boynton Beach, FL 1510. It lost its license in the late 60s. Other than that info, it's a mystery. (WBZY 990 Torrington, CT was another one that just vanished from the airwaves with little remaining info other than "financial woes.")

Your 1949 logging of WOSC eminated from a huge GE XT -1-A 1,000 watt transmitter. It's still in my building, although it doesn't fire- up too well. When I bought WOSC last year (for Si for the license) the old GE was the only bit of history left. Your verie makes a nice addition to the "history" file. Thanks again for your letter.

ncerely,

Dear Mr. Geary:

I wish to thank you for your correspondences, and to confirm that the radio stations operating on the 1630 AM and 1700 AM bands were transmitting from John F. Kennedy International Airport located in Jamaica, New York.

John F. Kennedy International Airport is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey under a lease agreement with the City of New York since June 1, 1947. JFK is located in the southeast section of Queens County within New York City on Jamaica Bay. It is fifteen miles by highway from . The geographic reference points for the airport are: 40° 38' 28.5" north, 73° 46' 41.9" west. The size of JFK encompasses the area from to within Manhattan Island, or 4,930 acres. Kennedy International Airport is also 12.7 feet above sea level.

The Port Authority instituted the 1630 kHz Station as a Highway Advisory Radio Station in April 1997, and the 1700 kHz Station during September 1997 to broadcast relevant traffic advisories and other information to our customers as they enter and depart the airport. The equipment being used to transmit these messages is the same DR1000A system. This system is an all solid-state multi -message, audio recorder/player with an advanced microprocessor control system that has been manufactured by Digital Recorders, Inc., of North Carolina. The DR1000A was designed by Digital primarily for use as a Highway Advisory Radio broadcast station. The DR1000A can record and play back up to 25 1/2 minutes of audio messages that can be constantly repeated over a long period of time without degrading the audio quality. The station is powered by a 10 -watt transformer that is connected to a solar panel system at the site.

Finally, we are returning the stamps that you enclosed for return postage. Hopefully, you will be able to monitor other stations, and be able to forward these stamps to the operator in order that you might receive other letters of verification for your collection. In addition, we are returning the audio -cassette you forwarded, I was extremely surprised to note the clarity of the recordings from these Highway Advisory Radio Stations. 711E PONT AUTHORITY 011k1S7£5 GUZ/74

Dear Mr. Geary:

Sorry for the delay in replying to your letters dated October 20, 1981 and December 27, 1981, but hope with the following explanation, you will understand.

I work as the Chief Engineer for WGRC on a part-time basis approximately six to eight hours a week. My full-time job is Jr. Technical Manager of RF Maintenance and Operations for the American Broadcasting Companies (ABC) in New York. I was intensely involved in the New York City Marathon Show, which aired on Sunday morning, October 25, 1981 from 10:00 A.M. to 1:15 P.M. (approximate off air time show ran over). The show involved about 80% RF equipment. There were three separate communications systems, one for engin- eering, one for production and one for control room directing and several RF microphones and microwaving, which is described below.

Just for a quick summary of the show, we rented four helicopters for micro- wave relays to the Empire State Building. The lead vehicles were following the runners and were microwaving their camera picture to the helicopter, which in turn sent the signal to the Empire State Building. From there, we had four receivers which were cabled to our studios. Also, there was one back-up helicopter receiver point at the World Trade Center. Along with that, there were also five emergency back-up points along 26 miles, 385 yards of the marathon for the helicopter receiver points. There were also eleven other microwave points along the route for most of the other cameras involved in the show. I had worked over 120 hours that week and got all of 24 hours sleep in eight straight days.

Right after that we started moving the studios and offices of WGRC to Church Street, Spring Valley, N.Y. We are still in the middle of the move, having had other problems develop at our sister station, WLIR on Long Island. Now that the problem with WLIR has been corrected and things are beginning to get back to normal, I am finally able to get time to write to you.

Your log is quite correct in every way and I am pleased to verify it herewith. Your submitted information is not only unusual but useful. It is not often that our listeners utilize field strength meters!

WHEN's daytime power is 5 KW non-direational, 250' tower, Western Electric transmitter using the Doherty circuit. The nightime transmitter is a Collins 1 KW, 20K, into a 4 tower array directional north and south. Kermit Geary 1266 Riverview Drive Walnutport. Pennsylvania 18088 bear Kermit;

Yes, you have recieved 1120 WHTT AM from Buffalo. I am sorry to inform you that I don't know the eminated power of WHTT-AM due to the fact that I work there as a log keeper , etc. but my educated guess is somewhere in the vacinity of 30 K Watts. I imagine you are on a high elevation.in relation to Buffalo.Although the transmitter is on an escarpment equal to the height of Niagara Falls in relation to Buffalo, you are probably higher than the transmitter (mean sea level).

WHTT is a top 40 type radio station with a nice slice of the Buffalo radio market. The station boasts morning drive time DJ Sandy Beach, formerly with WKBW- AM which now is WWKB 1520. I'm sure you must get 1520. WHTT is simulcast on FM stereo & AM mono.

I wish I could give you more detailed info for your collection but the station itself just gave your letter to our engineering group because I guess that they are too busy with production and what not. thanks for the letter. I'm writing this on Christmas Day from my girlfriendg workplace and I hope this holiday season finds you happy and healthy.

Dear Kermit,

This letter will confirm your reception of Rockland County's Public Safety Residents Information Broadcast Station (PS RIBS) on 1640 kHz that you heard on June 9, 2000.

The programming items you listed are part of our residents' information broadcast and are played on a repetitive basis. Currently we have 11 messages recorded and are working on improving the quality and variety of the messages. In fact we have been working on obtaining a "professional voice" to make some recordings for us. It is our hope that doing so will increase our listening audience.

The station was put in place after Tropical Storm Floyd, which caused much damage to our area and stressed our public information capabilities to its limits. Myself and other members of the Office of Fire & Emergency Services have recorded the messages. Although none of us have any professional radio experience, I think we did okay.

For now our broadcasts are focused on emergency information. However, we have begun broadcasting interesting things about Rockland County.

Thank you for your comments and I hope you will continue to keep an ear for us and let us know how are doing.

Sincerely,

I hereby confirm your reception of the seventh annual WTBQ DX test, conducted 1 April 2002.

Lynn at IRCA e -mailed me and said that the test was heard by DXers in Burnt River, ON; , ON (tentative); New Brunswick and Marshfield, LA. (Unsuccessful tries included Spring City PA; Louisiana; Detroit; Alabama; Louisville; Alberta and California (!).)

Previous DX tests have been heard in other parts of Canada, plus , North Carolina (how he heard it over WBT, I'll never know!) and the Bahamas!

By the way, the songs you heard were "How Long Are You Staying" by the MSR Singers, "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" by the Spencer -Hagen Orchestra, and "You Good Boy (You Get Cookie)" by the Teen Queens. (These are not songs one is likely to hear on other radio stations, to say the least!)

You've been a member of the NRC for 69 years? Wow!

PLEASE REPLY TO: Kermit Geary, Reception Verified R.D. 2, Box 298, y L Radio Walnutport, Pa. AMHERST, NEW YORK April 10, 1960.

Chief Engineer, Radio Station W -Y -S -L, Amherst, N. Y. Dear Sir,

I have pleasure in reporting my reception of your Radio Station WYSL during the concluding portion of its regular broadcasting schedule on the evening of Saturday, April 9, 1960. I tuned in at 6:42 P.M., Eastern Standard Time, and continued listening to your recorded program of "" until you signed off and left the air at 7:03-i P.M., E.S.T. WYSL was trans- mitting on its assigned frequency of 1080 kilocycles, and put a good signal down here into Pennsylvania despite considerable inter- ference. I am situated in the eastern part of the Keystone State, 60 miles North of Philadelphia and 90 miles West of New York City.

WYSL's signal in this area had excellent strength, S-9, with an input voltage into my receiver of 10 microvolts as measured on the signal -strength meter. Fading was negligible, and there was no atmospheric static. As mentioned above, however, interference was encountered from the 50 -kilowatt station WTIC, Hartford, Conn. (only 170 air miles Northeast ofmy location), which operates full time on your frequency of 1080 kc. Nevertheless, your transmission coming from a greater distance had sufficientpower to break through the interference with fairly good clarity (Readability -3),so as to permit the logging of your broadcast ata point this far from the Buffalo area. Your carrier was sharp, clean-cut and fully modulated. The tonal quality of both speech and musicwas perfect. It was a pleasure to hear WYSL reaching out in such fine shapeon this occasion, and I enjoyed the opportunity of listening to your station for the first time since your call letterswere changed from WINE. Congratulations on the power and efficiency of your transmitting equipment.

I heard WYSL on my National "HRO" tube communications - type superhet, 1935 model. My antenna is a single -wire inverted "L", 150 ft. long and 30 ft. high, extending toward the Southeast, with the lead-in to the receiver coming off the Northwest end.My ground connection is made to an iron water pump ina well 175 ft. deep. The weather here at the time of my receptionwas clear and cool, with the temperature at 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Dear Mr. Geary; Thank you or your very interesting letter dated March 14,1959.1 have checked your report against our program log an' have found it to be correct.I guess that there 's really nothing more to add to the previous report. WVOX operates on a frequency of 1460 kc.with a power of 500 watts to an RCA Type BTA-500M transmitter. The antenna is as follows:190' uniform cross-sectio%guyed,series exited radiator, the top 10' being an FM antenna.Ground system consists of 120 radials aver- age legnth 167' of buried copper wire, plus a 18' square copper ground screen.WV0X-FM operates on a frequency of 93.5 mc. with a power of 1000 watts erp to a Radio Engineering laboratories Transmitter Model 518D -DL. The antenna is a Raytheon Model RFW-1A with the supporting structure 190' uesed as our AM antenna. The modulation system is a Type BA -25A AGC program amplifier feeding a Gates compression amplifier. This insures that we modulate 90-95% at all time on AM whereas the FM feeds directly off the board which keeps the dynamic response nessecarr to good qualiy FM transmission. I guess that you have every thing that there is to know about our station.Once again thankyou fbr your interest. Yours in DX,

near Mr. Geary; Thank ypu very much for your report dated March 8,1959.1 am very pleas- ed to know that our "peanut whistle" as power in commercial circles,is get- ting out so well.I deeply appreciate the great pains that you have taken to log us.That is why I put your letters ihead of the others that I have waiting.I had best explain the stationary.WmES was a temporary call that we chose until the FCC approved our request for the new call.Since approval might have come at any time we deemed it foolish to have new stationary printed. WVOXoperates on a frequency of 1460 kc. with a power of 500 watts and NVOIX-FM operates on a frequency of 93.5 mc. witti a power of 1000 watts. WVOX,WSKN,WVIP,and pending FCC approval,WNIT all compose the Herald Trib- une Radio Network. The only discrepency that I found in your report was that you mention- ed a spot for Bond Bread. We do not have them as a sponsor however consider- ing your difficulty in hearing us through the "hash" on 1460 I think that you have done a remarkable job of reporting. Enclosed is some material that we had made for advertising, but,it pro- vides a good history of the network.Once again Thank Yo u. Yours in DX,

Dear Mr. Geary:

I'm pleased to confirm your reception of WWCN onSeptember 27th, 28th, and 29th, at 7:00 to 7:14 PM, 6:35 to6:48 PM, and 6:37 to 6:45 A.M., respectively. Your information wasquite accurate, and indeed most helpful to us, as was your"SINPO" stats. It is rare that we receive such detailed information, and I thank you for it.

As per your question concerning our pattern and poweroutput, the enclosed coverage map can answer the first part ofthe question a bit better than myself. As for power output, we have a 3 tower array of 5KW-D non-directional, 5KW-N directional, and our transmitter is a Gates BC5HA.

I must apologize for not being Mr. Chris Devine, the person you'd written to, however because of my knowledge inthe area, I usually handle the QSL replies. And for good reason - I too am an avid Dxer, so I couldn't resist passing up your letter!

Again, thanks for writing.
