25 ProductionNews All Creatures Great and Small to Premiere on PBS Michiana – WNIT in January James Herriot’s adventures as a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire get a glori- ous new adaptation in All Creatures Great and Small, a seven-part series based on his beloved books, airing Sundays, January 10 - February 21, 2021 at 9pm on PBS Michiana – WNIT. All Creatures Great and Small opens in 1937, when James Herriot, fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, follows his dream to become a vet in the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, one of England’s most beloved and beautiful landscapes. He soon discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners, and the Dales’ farmers are a tough crowd to please. At Skeldale House, James gets to know his newly formed dysfunctional family: his chaotic and erratic boss Siegfried Farnon, his wayward brother Tristan and the shrewd Mrs. Hall, who is endlessly steering the ship. When local beauty Helen Alderson attracts James’s Henry Louis Gates, Jr. to Present new series attention, he finds another, more enduring reason to stay in the Dales. The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Since their first publication in 1970, the beloved books of James Alfred Song in February Wight, published under the pen name James Herriot, have held a special place in people’s hearts throughout the world. The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song will premiere February 16 and 23, 2021 at 9pm. This moving four-hour, two-part series from executive producer, host and writer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America, all the way down to its bedrock role as the site of African American survival and grace, organizing and resilience, thriving and testifying, autonomy and freedom, solidarity and speaking truth to power. The documentary reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement across the Middle Passage.

“Our series is a riveting and systematic exploration of the myriad ways in which African Americans have worshipped God in their own images, and continue to do so today, from the plantation and prayer houses, to camp meetings and store-front structures, to mosques and mega-churches,” says Dr. Gates. “This is the story and song our ancestors bequeathed to us, and it comes at a time in our country when the very things they struggled and died for — faith and freedom, justice and equality, democracy and grace — all are on the line. No social institution in the Black community is more central and important than the Black church.”

For many, the Black church is their house of worship. For some, it is ground zero for social justice. For others, it is a place of transcendent cultural gifts exported to the world, from the soulful voices of preachers and congregants, to the sublime sounds of gospel music. For the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., going to church in America also was “the most segregated hour” of the week. The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song will explore the changing nature of worship spaces and the men and women who shepherded them from the pulpit, the choir loft and church pews. The churches are also a world within a world, where Black Americans could be themselves, and the epicenter of the freedom struggle that revolutionized the United States across slavery and abolition, Reconstruction, Jim Crow and the Great Migration, and the civil rights movement. Directors’Circle The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.

Decio

October 19, 1930-November 6, 2020

WNIT joins the entire community to mourn the passing of Arthur J. Decio. Art was one of the founding members of WNIT and through the years continued to offer his guidance and support to our organization. He was recognized in a 2015 WNIT Legends of Michiana documentary to showcase how he helped shape our region. Art was a proponent of children’s programming on WNIT, earning him the nickname the “Mayor of Sesame Street” for his years of support for this program. Art received many awards locally and nationally for business and philanthropic leadership, but was always first and foremost a supporter of Elkhart County and the Michiana region, especially area non-profits and those less fortunate. Art was quick to point out that he did not accomplish any of his many successes alone, with his dear wife Patricia George Decio always by his side until her passing in 2010.

WNIT and our community is forever grateful for the vision and friendship of Mr. Arthur J. Decio.
