Language of Material: English . Biographical / Historical Oren Kent Garvey was born in 1941. He was an independent photojournalist whose photographs in appeared in gay and lesbian newspapers such as Advocate and Update. He was also a member of the Great American Yankee (GAY) Freedom Band in the early 1980s. Garvey died in 2010. Access The collection is open to researchers. There are no access restrictions. Scope and Contents The collection comprises slides, contact sheets, negatives, photographic prints, and papers, 1970-2000, from photojournalist Kent Garvey, whose photographs appeared in gay and lesbian newspapers such as the Advocate and Update. The photographs document a variety of gay and lesbian-related activities, including gay pride celebrations in Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego; Gay Games competitions in San Francisco and Seattle; Gay Men's Chorus concerts; performances of the Great American Yankee Freedom Band; the 1987 March on Washington; fundraisers for AIDS-related organizations; the Supermen pageants; drag pageants; Sunset Junction Street Fairs; Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center (Los Angeles LGBT Center) events; and local organizational and government meetings. The papers document Garvey's membership in the Great American Yankee (GAY) Freedom Band; as well as an incident in 1989 in which he was shot by an unknown assailant outside of a gay nightclub. Arrangement Photographic materials were originally stored in binders organized by the collection creator, Kent Garvey. The contents of the binders were transferred to folders. The titles of the binders are retained and are arranged in alphabetical order with untitled folders at the end. Three additional folders of papers are arranged at the end of the collection. The Concept is intended to serve as the basic framework for the Los Angeles General Plan, which is scheduled to be com­ pleted by the end of 1970. The report is the first in a series of recommendations for the General Plan. The General Plan is the basic component of the comprehensive planning process. The first part of my work outlines possible theoretical approaches to tomboyism from the perspective of gender (androgyny, feminist criticism, female masculinity, masquerade and gender performance), discusses the issue of the tomboy’s liminal position between childhood and adulthood as well as between masculinity and femininity and introduces the method of intersectional analysis which, combined with queer theory addressing identity categories as fluid, allows me to analyze questions of race, class and sexuality arising from the specific regional setting of McCullers’s work.

    WOMEN IN HOLLYWOOD OVERVIEW: MAKERS: Women In Hollywood showcases the women of showbiz, from the earliest pioneers to present-day power players, as they influence the creation of one of the country’s biggest commodities: entertainment. In the silent movie era of Hollywood, women wrote, directed and produced, plus there were over twenty independent film companies run by women. That changed when Hollywood became a profitable industry. The absence of women behind the camera affected the women who appeared in front of the lens. Because men controlled the content, they created female characters based on classic archetypes: the good girl and the fallen woman, the virgin and the whore. The women’s movement helped loosen some barriers in Hollywood. A few women, like 20th century Fox President Sherry Lansing, were able to rise to the top. Especially in television, where the financial stakes were lower and advertisers eager to court female viewers, strong female characters began to emerge. Premium cable channels like HBO and Showtime allowed edgy shows like Sex in the City and Girls , which dealt frankly with sex from a woman’s perspective, to thrive. One way women were able to gain clout was to use their stardom to become producers, like Jane Fonda, who had a breakout hit when she produced 9 to 5 . But despite the fact that 9 to 5 was a smash hit that appealed to broad audiences, it was still viewed as a “chick flick”. In Hollywood, movies like Bridesmaids and The Hunger Games , with strong female characters at their center and strong women behind the scenes, have indisputably proven that women centered content can be big at the box office.

    New On Video & DVD Yes Man Jim Carrey returns to hilarious form with this romantic comedy in the same vein as the Carrey classic Liar Liar. After a few stints in more serious features like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Number 23, Carrey seems right at home playing Carl, a divorcé who starts out the film depressed and withdrawn, scared of taking a risk. Pressured by his best friend, Peter (Bradley Cooper), to get his act together or be stuck with a lonely life, Carl attends a New Age self-help seminar intended to change "no men" like Carl into "yes men" willing to meet life's challenges with gusto. Carl is reluctant at first, but finds the seminar to be ultimately life-changing when he's coerced into giving the "say yes" attitude a try. As the first opportunity to say yes presents itself, Carl hesitantly utters the three-letter word, setting the stage for a domino effect of good rewards, and giving Carrey a platform to show off his comic chops. But over time Carl realizes that saying yes to everything indiscriminately can reap results as complicated and messy as his life had become when saying "no" was his norm. The always-quirky Zooey Deschanel adds her signature charm as Carl's love interest, Allison. An unlikely match at first glance, the pair actually develop great chemistry as the story progresses, the actors play- ing off each other's different styles of humor. Rhys Darby also shines as Carl's loveable but clueless boss, and That 70s Show's Danny Masterson appears as another one of Carl's friends.
