Malesic On April 13, the Church will celebrate the last Pope to be honored as a Bishop of Cleveland martyr – Pope St. Martin I. Born in either the late 6th or early 7th century AD, Most Reverend Anthony M. Pilla, Bishop Emeritus Martin distinguished himself as a man of learning and holiness. He became Most Rev. Roger W. Gries, OSB, Aux. Bishop, Retired a deacon in Rome. This brought him to the notice of Pope Theodore I, who appointed him to be his personal representative to the Imperial Court in Cathedral Staff Constantinople during a particularly tumultuous time. Rev. Sean Ralph, Rector Constantinople was the Capital of the Byzantine Empire, and the Church [email protected] in the East had a strange relationship with the emperor, who saw it as his Rev. Arnel A. Lagman, Parochial Vicar duty to insert himself into the theological affairs. The Church was recovering [email protected] from the Monophysite Heresy, which held that Jesus only had one nature Deacon John P. Sferry, Deacon, Retired (not two, a human nature and a divine nature, as the Church has always and [email protected] Carolyn Apperson, Parish Catechetical Leader will always believe). Out of this way of thinking about Jesus came another [email protected] proposal – Jesus had two natures that acted as one, and that these two natures Gregory Heislman, Music Director & Organist had a single common activity and will. This line of thinking was known as [email protected] Monothelitism (one will), and was initially thought by Pope Honorius I (625- Joseph Petros, Organist 638) to be a compromise that satisfied the Eastern Church and maintained Christ’s two natures; so he was prepared to let the controversy rest. After In Residence Pope Honorius’ death, the emperor proclaimed this new teaching as the law Rev. Donald P. Oleksiak of the land. However, when Pope Theodore I (AD 642-649) realized that this [email protected] line of thinking was just another iteration of the Monophysite Heresy, he Rev. John E. Manning condemned it, and excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople, which [email protected] enraged the emperor. Rev. Daniel F. Schlegel While the controversy was raging, Theodore died, and Martin was [email protected] eventually chosen to be Pope (AD 649). He ascended to the throne of St. Peter without Imperial consent, and chose to proceed with his consecration without Our Cathedral Mission is to provide all the emperor’s approval. The new pope convened a synod in the West and people with access to the saving love of God through officially condemned the Monothelite Heresy, and promulgated the decree of Word, Sacraments, and a community of justice and this synod as a correction to the errors made by Emperor Constans II and the love, that empowered by the Holy Spirit, we might patriarch in the East. The emperor now demanded the Pope’s submission to all become beloved disciples of Jesus Christ, living Monothelitism or his death. First he tried to turn the people against the Pope, and inviting others to a holy and abundant life. but when that failed, he sent an assassin to kill him in Rome. However, the man sent to kill the Pope as he was distributing Holy Communion, later testified Cathedral Parish Membership that before he could take the Pope’s life, he lost his eyesight and could not carry March: 1,132 households, 1,836 individuals out the deed.
