Steadfast and shrewd heroines: the defence of chastity in the Latin post-Nicene passions and the Greek novels ANNELIES BOSSU Ghent University 1. Introduction Over the past decades, the disparaging opinion of the Greek ‘ideal’ novels which goes back to at least Rohde’s pioneer modern study of 18761 has been abandoned: they are no longer viewed as literary inferior texts. Together with this renewed and favourable attention, research into the novels’ inter- connections with other ancient narrative texts increased. Unsurprisingly, the interplay with the Roman novel was explored. It has been argued that Petro- nius parodied the Greek novels2 and attention has been drawn to thematic and structural correspondences between the Greek novels and both Apuleius’ Metamorphoses3 and the Historia Apollonii Regis Tyri.4 Whereas the Chris- tian overtone in the latter work is debated,5 the novels’ interaction with ————— 1 Rohde 1876. 2 This thesis was first raised by Heinze in 1899 and has received wide acceptance since, see e.g. Conte 1996, esp. 31-34 on his adaptation of Heinze’s thesis. Brian Dunkle, S.J., at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry in the fall semester of 2016. (064/36) Sant'Andrea delle Fratte Sant'Andrea delle Fratte is a minor basilica, as well as an early 17th century parish, titular and convent church in the rione Colonna, just to the south of the Piazza di Spagna, dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle. History The first church here was built in the 1192, called infra hortes (later translated into "delle Fratte" or "shrubs") for it was located in a countryside area. The first time that the name Fratte is used is in the 15th century. It means literally "woods" or "overgrown vegetation", and seems to commemorate an overgrown area which might have been an abandoned piece of land, some shrubby garden or the facing slope of the Pincian hill when it was still wild. (1) (11) The church was probably rebuilt (or newly built on this site) in the 15th century, when there is a hint in the records that an Augustinian nunnery was established here. Then it was for some time the national church of Scotland as an independent kingdom (St Andrew is Scotland's patron). After the Scottish Reformation in 1560 the Scots completely lost interest in it, and for a while it was taken over by a pious confraternity dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament. However it was given to the Order of Minim of St. Francis of Paola Friars in 1585, and they still serve the parish which was simultaneously created. (1) (11) In 1604 the construction of the new church was begun, under the design of Gaspare Guerra. The project halted in 1612 due to lack of funds. -

ABSTRACT Sarcophagi in Context: Identifying the Missing Sarcophagus of Helena in the Mausoleum of Constantina Jackson Perry Director: Nathan T. Elkins, Ph.D The Mausoleum of Constantina and Helena in Rome once held two sarcophagi, but the second has never been properly identified. Using the decoration in the mausoleum and recent archaeological studies, this thesis identifies the probable design of the second sarcophagus. This reconstruction is confirmed by a fragment in the Istanbul Museum, which belonged to the lost sarcophagus. This is contrary to the current misattribution of the fragment to the sarcophagus of Constantine. This is only the third positively identified imperial sarcophagus recovered in Constantinople. This identification corrects misconceptions about both the design of the mausoleum and the history of the fragment itself. Using this identification, this thesis will also posit that an altar was originally placed in the mausoleum, a discovery central in correcting misconceptions about the 4th century imperial liturgy. Finally, it will posit that the decorative scheme of the mausoleum was not random, but was carefully thought out in connection to the imperial funerary liturgy itself. Giovanni Battista Braccelli’s Etched Devotions before the Vatican Bronze Saint Peter Erin Giffin, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany IN THE MID-SEVENTEENTH CENTURY, the artist Giovanni Battista Braccelli (ca. 1584–1650) created an etching of the bronze Saint Peter cult statue at the Vat- ican surrounded by devotees and votives (fig. 1).1 This previously unpublished print, titled The Bronze Saint Peter with Votives, offers a detailed representation of the devotional object in its early modern location (figs. 2–3): against the northeast pier of the crossing of Saint Peter’s Basilica, where Pope Paul V Borghese (r. 1605– 21) had installed it on May 29, 1620 (still in situ today). The print details a group of early modern visitors gathered around the sculpture—well-dressed men, women, and children to the left of the composition, and an assortment of humbler lay and religious personages to the right. At the center, two pilgrims with walking sticks in hand and broad-brimmed hats slung over their shoulders approach the foot of the sculpted Saint Peter with great reverence. The first of the two bows down to touch the top of his head to the underside of the sculpted foot in an act of extreme humility, bracing himself against the sculpture’s base as the crowd looks on with approval. Emanating up from the devotees, a series of ex-voto offerings blanket the flanking pilasters of Saint Peter’s. One can make out the barest references of standard votive imagery and objects on the sketchily rendered plaques—kneel- ing figures and canopied beds before floating apparitions—accompanied by Contact Erin Giffin at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (erin.giffin@kunstgeschichte .uni-muenchen.de). -

While previous scholars have considered the influence of the historical setting on the conception of Maderno’s Santa Cecilia, none have studied how this historical moment affected the beholder of the work. In 1600, the Church’s Holy Year of Jubilee drew hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to Rome to take part in Church rites and rituals. -

I). The monumental palace stretches for eighty ,five metres along the Western flank of the piazza from the Southern corner coward the Northern end. The exceptionally long fapde is organised into a symmetrical sequence of bays with a projecting central section and is buttressed, at the North end, by a distinct fapde with a large serliana win, dow (an arch with crabeaced sides). The exterior boasts a profusion of ornament that enlivens the surface and punctuates the horizontality of the building. Through sheer scale and abundance of form, the Palazzo Pamphilj bespeaks grandeur and authority. Architecture serves the rhetorical functions of communication and persuasion. In the early modem period (ca. 1500-1800), palaces in particular became synonymous with the statm of their owners. Today, the Palazzo Pamphilj houses the Embassy of Brazil in Rome, but until the government ofBrazil purchased the palace in 1960, it had belonged to the Pamphilj family. -

Italian Books I Philobiblon Rome London New York In collaboration with Govi Rare Books, New York Italian Books I Spring 2019 Preface We are very pleased to present Philobiblon’s new publishing initiative Italian Books, a series of numbered catalogues devoted to the important place of Italian culture on the world stage. The catalogues will feature manuscripts, documents, printed books, engravings, drawings, and artist’s books produced in Italy, as well as Italian books printed outside the country, translations attesting to the impact of Italian culture abroad, including volumes finely bound by sought-after Italian binders, and those once owned by great protagonists of Italian book collecting. Together these selections will illuminate a journey into the multifarious Italian book world in the broadest and richest sense. After all, the history of the book itself is a fascinating narrative, an uninterrupted medley of fruitful cultural transfers and the migration of ideas. In this regard, Italy has always represented a unique crossroad among cultures, the custodian of ancient past, as well as the gateway between Western and Eastern worlds, whose academies, art collections, libraries, printing houses, and bookshops have provided, over the centuries, fertile meeting grounds for generations of scholars, bibliophiles, and connoisseurs. In the first decades of the twentieth century, two international exhibitions paid homage to the Italian book. The Mostra Storica dell’Arte della Stampa in Italia opened in Leipzig in 1914 and presented the magnificence of Italian book production from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. The splendid Exposition du Livre Italien followed in Paris in 1926, mounted at the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. -
