SMARANDACHE 4 FLORENTIN SMARANDACHE or/and THE FIRST SOURCE OF PARADOXISM (instead of INTRODUCTION) As if it wanted to be in accordance with the paradoxism and even to confirm it, the way the mathematician writer Florentin Smarandache is received is ... paradoxical. Tens of books, studies and articles have already been written about both, scientist and smarandachism - the name given to the movement by Ion Rotaru and Titu Popescu. However the paradoxist number 1 in the world is less known in his native country. At the same time some researchers ( Jacques Sarthou, Dan Tarchila, Doru Motoc and even... Ion Rotaru) declared him a man of genius (or close by!), while others ignored him or they haven’t yet heard about him. Without being disturbed by any of the two contradictory tendencies, the Oltenian- Romanian settled in New Mexico creates further on important works in the two large fields- literatures and mathematics (but also in other art and scientific fields). I have attentively read the entire literary work of the writer (sporadically read, on “pieces” or “modules”, it could be wrongly understood!), as well as - as much as I could understand- some of his mathematical, philosophical, enigmatical etc. creations. I recognize that almost all the lecture time I have had the revelation of renewal and, moreover, a kind of a prolonged shock: the Romanian- American “neovanguard” is the creator of a new practical and theoretical system, well fixed in its main joints and not at all below (in some cases, on the contrary!) than other artistic currents of last centuries. If I have been the only “receiver” with this kind of reactions, I could have suspected myself of subjectivism or exaltation in front of the unwonted - real, anyway- of the new literary movement. But same reactions have had before me a series of some foreign and Romanian writers as J.Levenard, A.Skemer, Teresinka Pereira, Khalid Rais, Claude Le Roy, Constantin M. Popa, Titu Popescu, Florin Vasiliu, Gheorghe Tomozei etc. Why then Florentin Smarandache does not enjoy a recognition on the measure of his gift and originality? Perhaps because of these human (re)sentiments we have talked about above? Or according to the new axiomatic principles (pro)claimed by postmodernists, the homologation and the consideration of the exceptional human mind’s values are not considered compulsory anymore, everyone having- virtually- the chance to be “caliph for one day”? Every one of these hypothesis, or both at the same time, or only parts of them, could be plausible. However, we think that the cause has to be searched for elsewhere. The postmodernism appears as a movement as large as the whole artistic and literary world’s sphere, as the postmodernity itself. However, many times has been avoided the fact that there is a dialectical relation between postmodernity and the level of civilization and culture of a country; and this relation remains identically available if the first term of relation would be replaced by postmodernism. When he has found out the possibility to transfer in literature the paradoxes from mathematics and daily life, Smarandache could have exclaimed as the antique wise: “Evrika!”. At the same time he surpassed the danger of artifice or of the “import” of ideas. Subsequently his original system acquires generality and internationally. It is so much clear the omission by some exegetes of this essential feature of paradoxism, the analysis being moved towards some collateral aspects regarding the artistic and speech means used. There is an unintentional practice, of course, but it leads to exaggerated assertions regarding the movement affinities with the avant-gardes from the first half of the XX-th century. 5 The existence and the struggle of contraries are stronger than ever in postmodernity. The paradoxism will find here a larger and more fertile field, keeping at a large degree its individuality, fact that encourages its ascent and expansion in a prolific and partly disappointed artistic world. Starting from these observations we tried to demonstrate in this work that the paradoxism is not in subordinate relation with the postmodernism but also it tends- from equal positions- to cover it.; at the same time, the postmodernism shows obvious tendencies to seize the “smarandachism”, in a reciprocity that reminds of the vessels communicating principle. In a separate chapter we proved- based on examples from Florentin Smarandache’s creations- that his writings could be “claimed” by postmodernism. But we also emphasized the features that distinguish the two movements. We insisted on the features which show paradoxism’s originality and, moreover, on the advantages that ensured its longevity. As a result of this society, the writer Smarandache is full of contradictions himself. His childish trust in people becomes, not just once, an unfair suspicion. Optimist, he builds with meticulousness and gift his pedestal, as a little pharaoh his pyramid, but often he falls into dark pessimistic moods, acutely living his supposed literary end (a mood detectable in many smarandachian creations). Atavistic roots pull him towards his native place from Balcesti- Valcea, while the States ...and the whole world are not enough for his flight. Modest nature, as all genuine human values, he is seized sometimes with an unmeasured vanity what makes him feeling the equal of every state leader, of every genius and even of the ... Creator himself! (see the poem Audience to God from the volume I am against myself). Prolific and prolix artist in many creations, he often succeeds to polish little gems in poetry, prose and theatre. Frankly and simply in expression, he becomes, not only once, picturesquely through a deliberate expressiveness, without avoiding (arghezian) the “hard” words, the “mould flowers” of spoken language etc. A genuine Fernando Pessoa of Romanians, the founder of paradoxism represents, in fact, through his contradictory personality, the first source of the paradoxism. I. SOARE The basic thesis of the paradoxism: Every thing/ phenomenon/ idea has a meaning and 6 a non-meaning in a contradictory harmony. The essence of the paradoxism: a) The NonSense has a Sense: (and reciprocally) b) The Sense has a NonSense. The motto of the paradoxism: All is possible, the impossible too! The symbol of the paradoxism: A spiral - optic illusion or vicious circle. The subsequent development of the paradoxism: To generalize the literature in scientific spaces ( Lobacevski, Riemann, Banach etc.), n-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces too. Paradoxism’s delimitation from other avant-gardes: ♦ paradoxism has a significance while dadaism, lettrism, the absurd movement do not; ♦ paradoxism especially reveals the contradictions, the antinomies, the anti- theses, antagonism, nonconformism, the paradoxes in other words of anything ( in literature, art, science), while futurism, cubism, abstractism and all other avant-gardes do not. Fl. Sm. 7 Paradoxology and Paradoxism At the beginning of 1980’s, a well-known playwright and man of theatre, the Frenchman Jacques Sarthou from Theatre de l’Ile de France, receiving from Florentin Smarandache the “Manifeste non-conformiste pour un nouveau movement litter ire, le Paradoxisme”, was so enthusiastic at the reading of the new movement’s programme, that claimed the author “le plus grand poete du xx-eme siecle”. “Bravo pour votre genie et votre courage!” ended the Frenchman his letter of answer towards the new founder, with a fair play and frankness that reduced, partly at least, the injustices perpetrated against the Romanians in the previous decades by his fellows countryman and by foreigners regarding the (un)knowledgement of some Romanian priorities. Approximately a decade later, the Romanian Ion Rotaru (well-meaning and friend with the paradoxist from Arizona, otherwise!), was near to eliminate the new literary movement, considering it ”a lamentable ariergardism”1) and its adherents ” some polite people, that’s all! ”2). Another Romanian writer, the lamented poet Gheorghe Tomozei, estimated the paradoxist programme formed by Smarandache as a” prodigy... a folly in a new edition and, eventually, a whim programme without programmes that, thank God, he does not follow”3). It should retain that Labis’s exegete expressed here his distrust only in the paradoxist movement and not in the poetic gift of its founder, whom he really appreciated: ”Florentin Smarandache is the name that I write and utter perhaps with the deepest emotion in my mind; after Nichita

Emil Giurca’s cultural activity, because about him we are talking about, is a significant “brick” from the wall which was created along with the vast process of clarifying the literary and spiritual Romanian literature and culture. Creator of literature, respected educator, he was in the same time an important fighter for national ideal but also a great entertainer, a cultural advisor to generations of writers from the interwar and postwar period. As many researchers of the aesthetic values observed, it seems that in any literature are important writers, widely recognized from the valuable point of view “as others who fall slightly below, but on different places in the hierarchy of values, enriching and diversifying artistic landscape from their period of time”1. Originally poet from his homeland, as Dumitru Micu noticed in “Romanian Literary History”, he became later the national poet of the whole national space, Emil Giurca cannot easily be integrated in any current or cannot be said that he belongs to any literary school and “if he installed in the classical formula, adopted by traditionalists (as Ion Barbu, a Paul Valery writer), he did it of course, because this formula and only it suited to his sensibility”2, Dumitru Micu said. Each poem in consistent with the requirements of the art is organize by an act of inner balance, a sense of the extent of composition; this is what we call Emil Giurca’s modernism.

    The Paradoxist Distich Theory (Fore/word and Back/word) The Fourth Paradoxist Manifesto by Florentin Smarandache (1998) The PARADOXIST DISTICH consists of two verses, antithetic to each other, but which together amalgamate in a whole defining (or making connection with) the title. Commonly, the second verse negates the first, containing therefore an antonymic/antagonistic notion/collocation or opposite idea. The making of the distich: - Take a dictionary of phrases and linguistic expressions, proverbs, sayings, teachings, aphorisms, riddles, adages, maxims, quips, or famous sayings of well- known personalities, and contradict them without pity, shear them! - Or take a dictionary of antonyms, and another of synonyms and joggle with contradictory notions/collocation/phrases - homogenizing heterogenic elements; choose also an adequate title and you enter in Paradoxism. The School of Paradoxist Literature, which evolved around 1980s, continues through these bi-verses closed in a new lyric exact formula, but with an opening to essence. For this kind of procedural poems one can elaborate mathematical algorithms and implement them in a computer: but, it is preferable a machine with … soul! Characteristics: The whole paradoxist distich should be as a geometric unitary parabola, hyperbola, ellipse at the borders between art, philosophy, rebus, and mathematics – which exist in complementariness; and to contain: - Antitheses, antinomies, antagonisms, antiphrases, paraphrases, contrary metaphors, polarizations; - paradoxes at the semantic level: ideate, social, political, theological, linguistic, psychological, philosophical, and even scientific; exactly this paradox provides the savory to the whole; from here the beauty of the writing, the flavor of the small metaphor fluttering its twined wings; - pseudo-paradoxes here and there; - preposterous character, against an obsolete academism and behind the times traditionalism (Al.

    The Revolutionary Force of the Periphery: The Levant, Nostalgia, and World Literature Delia Ungureanu University of Bucharest and Harvard University abstract: The December 1989 Revolution that overthrew the Communist regime brought Romanian literature back on the international literary market and dramat- ically changed the conditions for production and circulation. However, there was a lively circulation of foreign literature through translation into Romanian well before 1989. Here I will argue that Mircea Cărtărescu’s two major texts written in the late 1980s — the verse epic Levantul (The Levant) and the poetic novelNostalgia — can be seen as works of world literature through their intertextual dialogue, even though they were created with no expectation that they would ever circulate through translation beyond national borders. With their intertextual rewriting in an ironic and parodic manner, Cărtărescu’s works have been presented abroad as landmarks of Romanian postmodernism, but this essay argues that Cărtărescu’s manner of rewriting is closer to the nostalgic, serious, and constructive rewriting found in radically modernist texts. Cărtărescu’s The Levant and Nostalgia illustrate Pascale Casanova’s point that the revo- lutionizing of literary practices comes from the periphery of the literary field. This was doubly so during a politically controlled period that allowed Cărtărescu to choose his intertexts in the absence of any strategic hierarchy that would please the center and free from any expectation of gaining recognition from

    Relations between Modern Mathematics and Poetry: Czesław Miłosz; Zbigniew Herbert; Ion Barbu/Dan Barbilian by Loveday Jane Anastasia Kempthorne A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2015 Abstract This doctoral thesis is an examination of the relationship between poetry and mathematics, centred on three twentieth-century case studies: the Polish poets Czesław Miłosz (1911-2004) and Zbigniew Herbert (1924-1998), and the Romanian mathematician and poet Dan Barbilian/Ion Barbu (1895-1961). Part One of the thesis is a review of current scholarly literature, divided into two chapters. The first chapter looks at the nature of mathematics, outlining its historical developments and describing some major mathematical concepts as they pertain to the later case studies. This entails a focus on non-Euclidean geometries, modern algebra, and the foundations of mathematics in Europe; the nature of mathematical truth and language; and the modern historical evolution of mathematical schools in Poland and Romania. The second chapter examines some existing attempts to bring together mathematics and poetry, drawing on literature and science as an academic field; the role of the imagination and invention in the languages of both poetics and mathematics; the interest in mathematics among certain Symbolist poets, notably Mallarmé; and the experimental work of the French groups of mathematicians and mathematician-poets, Bourbaki and Oulipo. The role of metaphor is examined in particular. Part Two of the thesis is the case studies. The first presents the ethical and moral stance of Czesław Miłosz, investigating his attitudes towards classical and later relativistic science, in the light of the Nazi occupation and the Marxist regimes in Poland, and how these are reflected in his poetry.

De bună seamă: se poate urma o cale sau alta – una în pofida celeilalte, efect al veninului binarității disjunctive –, însă, dimpotrivă, elanul și forța de intelecție numai întreolaltă deschid și veghează orizonturi în cunoașterea veritabilă. Drumul în cauză învăluie, deopotrivă, chiar dacă anevoie uneori, și „fânul razelor” înșelătoare, și – Ion Barbu o știa exemplar – soarele geruit. Se înțelege de la sine, așadar, că orice propensiune cognitivă demnă de numele său se cuvine plasată pe orbita acestei înalte conexiuni transgresiv-integratoare; altfel, rămâne, cel mult, „vis [...] schilod”. Este – și, în ordine, nu este – cazul Colocviului de literatura română al studenților Facultății de Litere, Istorie și Teologie de la Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara, manifestare a cărei ediție inaugurală s-a desfășurat în mai 2011, sub dublă zodie: Barbu-Blaga 50 . I-au urmat Caragiale 100 , în 2012, Nichita Stănescu 30 , în 2013, iar în acest an lucrările îi vor fi consacrate lui Fundoianu-Fondane 70 . Trebuie spus răspicat că, în ciuda oricărei aparențe, manifestarea a rămas în permanență – și va rămâne – străină festivismelor facile, reperele tematice (aniversări/ comemorări) nefiind decât pretexte pentru exercițiul critic. Conceput inițial ca propedeutică la întâlnirile naționale de profil, colocviul s-a dovedit în scurt timp mult mai mult decât atât: prima ediție deja a însemnat spațiul de germinație al unei autentice, necesare agorale în care spiritele studențești de elită să interacționeze și să se afirme ca atare.
