Trafficking Materials and Maria Rentetzi Gendered Experimental Practices Chapter 6 The Aftermath of the Cambridge-Vienna Controversy: Radioactivity and Politics in Vienna in the 1930s Consequences of the Cambridge-Vienna episode ranged from the entrance of other 1 research centers into the field as the study of the atomic nucleus became a promising area of scientific investigation to the development of new experimental methods. As Jeff Hughes describes, three key groups turned to the study of atomic nucleus. Gerhard Hoffman and his student Heinz Pose studied artificial disintegration at the Physics Institute of the University of Halle using a polonium source sent by Meyer.1 In Paris, Maurice de Broglie turned his well-equipped laboratory for x-ray research into a center for radioactivity studies and Madame Curie started to accumulate polonium for research on artificial disintegration. The need to replace the scintillation counters with a more reliable technique also 2 led to the extensive use of the cloud chamber in Cambridge.2 Simultaneously, the development of electric counting methods for measuring alpha particles in Rutherford's laboratory secured quantitative investigations and prompted Stetter and Schmidt from the Vienna Institute to focus on the valve amplifier technique.3 Essential for the work in both the Cambridge and the Vienna laboratories was the use of polonium as a strong source of alpha particles for those methods as an alternative to the scintillation technique. Besides serving as a place for scientific production, the laboratory was definitely 3 also a space for work where tasks were labeled as skilled and unskilled and positions were divided to those paid monthly and those supported by grant money or by research fellowships. -

The frst dissertation in chemistry was approved in 1902. In the following years, only one or two women were annually enrolled, while the number of male students of chemistry continuously fuctuated around 22. Whereas four women completed their doctorate in the frst year of WWI, six followed in 1917, and ten more in 1919. Strikingly, in that year the number of female students even exceeded that of male colleagues. Margarethe Furcht, the daughter of a Jewish stockbroker, was the frst female chemist with a doctoral degree certifcate in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her paper “Über die Veresterung von Sulfosäuren…”, which she published in 1902 together with her academic supervisor Rudolf Wegscheider, was one of the frst scientifc chemical publications of women in Austria. However, of all female graduates, only a small number worked as chemists within the next two decades. After the occupation of Austria by German Troops in March 1938, seven of the Jewish women managed to emigrate, four were murdered in the Holocaust. Given the importance of this period within the landscape of European scientifc history, we here aim to provide the frst comprehensive overview of the history of women studying chemistry at the University of Vienna. -

A third Guareschi reaction, the so-called “Guareschi 1897 reaction”, is one of the most unusual reactions in organic chemistry, involving the radical-mediated paradoxical aerobic generation of hydro- carbons in near-neutral water solution. A discussion of the mechanism of this amazing reaction, the only metal-free process that generates hydrocarbons, and the implications of the approach in biology and geosciences mirrors the multifaceted scientific person- ality of the discoverer. Thus, Guareschi’s eclectic range of activities spans a surprising variety of topics, overcoming the bound- aries of the traditional partition of chemistry into organic, inorganic, and analytical branches and systematically crosses the divide between pure and applied science as well as between the history of chemistry and the personal contributions to its development. -

The weather is getting more miserable every day and I must really summon up all my strength so as not to become totally melancholic; I need not mention how much our correspondence helps me with this. […]¹ Envelope in the hand With these words, written in 1878, 17-year-old Mathilde Schey (1861‒1940) begins one of her of Mathilde to Marie, at many letters to her cousin Marie Perugia, the future Mrs Leopold de Rothschild (1862‒1937). It the Schloss Wimsbach. ral 000/924/17 was at the end of September; the summer vacation of the Schey family in their villa near Vienna was reaching its end; the autumnal weather darkened Mathilde’s mood. But almost daily contact through letters with her cousin Marie contributed to raising her spirit. This intense practice of writing, fostered during childhood, was both the expression and the product of the bourgeois culture that the two girls were surrounded by. Part of this culture, and part of the lifestyle of the German educated middle classes, was ongoing private correspondence that went well beyond the mere exchange of information. In the nineteenth century, the composing and receiving of letters was part ‘of the good form of social life’.² The regular exchange of letters 35 between relatives, friends and acquaintances was therefore customary for the members of the Above German bourgeoisie. Writing letters was part of daily life. -

Reiter* Karl Przibram is one of the pioneers of early solid state physics in the field of the inter- dependence of coloration effects and luminescence in solids (crystals, minerals) induced by radiation. In 1921 Przibram discovered the effect of radio-photoluminescence, the light- stimulated phosphorescence in activated crystals induced by gamma rays. In 1926 Przibram was the first to use the term, Farbzentrum (color center, F-center), and in 1923 he advanced the view of atomic centers as carriers of coloration. Being a pupil of Ludwig Boltzmann and Franz S. Exner, he dedicated his early work to condensation and conductivity phenomena in gases and Brownian motion. Under the influence of Stefan Meyer, he began his lifelong interest in mineralogy, setting up his own research group at the Vienna Radium Institute, which pioneered investigations on thermoluminescence and gave a first description of glow curves. Being of Jewish descent, Przibram had to leave Austria after the Nazis took power; he found shelter in Belgium and returned to Austria in 1946 as professor for experimental physics at the University of Vienna. This paper is a first attempt to give an overview of the cultural and scientific background of Przibram’s life and science in context of the cultural and political developments from 1900 to 1950 in Austria. SCHEFBECK Abstract: When, in the second half of the 191*1 Century, oceanography emerged as a scientific discipline of its own, most of the seafaring nations of the time sent out expeditions to oceanographically investigate the sea. The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy did likewise, but instead of organizing another circumnavigation to collect various data from various oceans, the systematic investigation of a defined region of the oceans was chosen as the appropriate approach. On 11 April 1889 the zoologist Franz STEINDACHNER, the geologist Franz Ritter von HAUER, and the meteorologist Julius HANN submitted a proposal for expeditions to the Eastem Mediterranean to the Viennese Academy of Sciences, and the Academy set up the "Commission for the Exploration of the Eastem Mediterranean", later "Commission for Oceanographic Research"; members of this so-called "Deep-Sea Com mission" included the zoologist Carl CLAUS and the geologist Eduard SUEß. The Academy of Sciences provided the scientific programme and equipment for these deep-sea expedi tions, the navy, under its scientifically minded commander-in-chief, Admiral STERNECK, supplied the ship and crew, and the Museum of Natural History delegated scientists from its staff and took care of the large collections. The navy transport vessel "Pola" was outfitted with the latest oceanographic equipment using the expertise of Prince Albert of Monaco, Alexander AGASSIZ, and the Stazione Zoologica di Napoli. -

FLOW In 2013, the research directions at IST Austria expanded to include physics, studying – among other topics – fluid turbulence. Content Thus ‘flow’ has been chosen as theme for the 2013 annual report. At IST Austria the steady flow of ideas between researchers of different disciplines is stimulated by physical connections, such as the campus bridge, a meeting space between buildings.
