  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Medicated Diet Recipe Book
Traditional Chinese Medicine Medicated Diet Recipe Book Cindy Cheng D.Ac. D.CHM D.TCMP Anita Siu D.Ac. D.CHM D.TCMP Jessica Rea D.Ac. Yuki Minesaki D.Ac. Caroline Prodoehl D.Ac. Preface Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a school of medicine that originated in China thousands of years ago. It consists of a very comprehensive system of diagnosis, differentiation and treatment based on theories deeply rooted in Chinese culture and philosophy. TCM takes a holistic approach to both the understanding and treatment of the human body. This means that everything in the universe is interconnected and mutually affects each other to varying degrees. Similarly, TCM treatments don’t focus on the condition of the patient’s body alone. They take into account such environmental factors as the patient’s lifestyle and diet. As such, a large part of the efficacy of TCM is due to the suggested lifestyle changes that not only prolong the effects of the treatment, but also improves the overall health of the patients and prevents them from having relapses and/or contracting other diseases. Dietary therapy or medicated diet is perhaps the most effective and most commonly suggested by TCM practitioners. As the name suggests, medicated diet involves treating and preventing diseases by making changes in one’s diet. A TCM practitioner will suggest certain foods to eat while other foods to avoid based on each individual’s body condition. In addition, Chinese medicinal herbs are often incorporated into the daily diet to further enhance the effect of the dietary changes. This recipe book is a compilation of over 100 recipes that incorporate certain foods and herbs to treat and prevent a multitude of diseases.

And can you believe in all that time, this is my very first cookbook? In the next few pages, you’ll see the Top 10 most viewed recipes that can be found on my Focus:Snap:Eat food blog. Coincidentally, many are Chinese favorites from my youth growing up in Honolulu, which makes me wonder if I’m getting a lot of page hits from China? ;-) Whoever is reading my recipes, I thank you for your interest and hope you enjoy this collection of readers’ choices. Cheers, Ben 1 Hainanese Chicken Rice 2 I don’t think there’s a better dish to celebrate Hainanese Chicken Rice the pure chicken-ness of a good chicken Makes 4 servings than Hainanese chicken rice. Ingredients: If you’re not familiar with this dish, it’s 1 whole organic or free-range chicken (about 3 to 3.5 lbs.) extremely popular in Southeast Asia. In fact, 2 cups jasmine rice 1 English cucumber even though it was created in Hainan — an 2 to 4 stalks of green onion island province in Southern China — it was fresh ginger root adopted by other nearby Asian countries 4 cloves garlic 1 shallot and became so popular in Singapore that 1 star anise (optional) it’s considered the national dish.

  • Mary's Refreshing Summer Melon Soup
Summer Melon Soup By SSND Wellness Nurse Mary Tellis-Nayak Food as Medicine In the first soup article published in May, I spoke of the many reasons soup is good for you. Before we go into the recipe I have this season for a lovely summer soup, I would like you to consider “Food as Medicine.” I would like to offer an article, “Five ways to use food as medicine” from the Chopra Center, that explains how to start a preventive approach to your health using food. Begin by considering the importance of food and its potential for healing. The article references Ayurvedic Medicine which is an ancient form of healing used in India which precedes our current Allopathic Medicine by centuries. Perhaps there is something to be learned from other “Medical Models” which can augment and supplement the way we approach our health and wellness today. Nutritional facts for melons Like all fruit, melons help protect vision. Studies have shown that eating at least three servings of fruit – such as the cantaloupe and watermelon in this recipe - per day, may lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration by over 35%! Cantaloupe and watermelon are also heart-healthy, thanks to their high concentrations of the vital antioxidants, vitamins A and C. Consider the consumption of vitamin C-rich foods – one cup of cantaloupe has 112% of the Daily Required Value one cup of watermelon has 24% This is associated with a decreased risk of death from all causes, including heart disease and stroke. Foods rich in vitamin A - help prevent free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the bloodstream, where it can lead to heart attack or stroke.
