THE AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S WEEKLY – JUNE 2005 71 “He left magnificently,” says June Newton of her husband, Helmut, the internationally celebrated – and controversial – photographer who died in January last year after crashing his car into a retaining wall outside the landmark Hollywood hotel, Chateau Marmont. “He lived a marvellous life and he went out magnificently ... he didn’t hit anybody, he didn’t take me with him, he just went out all alone – in usual Newton style.” We are standing in the driveway of this impossibly Spanish boyfriend, Ricardo, and Helmut had asked romantic replica French chateau and June is recreating June what byline she intended adopting. Helmut Newton’s was the one the public came to know more about – the product of prosperous German Jewish parents who fled the Nazis before the outbreak of World War II and ended up in an Australian internment camp in 1940 for two-and-a-half years, before being drafted into the Australian army. Born in Berlin in 1920, he had been a sickly and fearful child, spoilt rotten by his mother, who often dressed him up in girls’ clothes and never discouraged him from the belief that everyone else’s needs were less important than his own. By his own admission, he was “insufferable”, but “cute”. By the time he was 13, he had developed a sleek but powerful swimmer’s body and a lurid imagination. He was besotted with photography and obsessed by sex. By the time he arrived in Australia in 1940 as a 20-year- old, he’d spent much of the previous two years as a self- described “gigolo” for an older woman in Singapore. Helmut was, of course, to become – in the words of American Vogue – “fashion’s infamous provocateur”. He pushed all the boundaries, broke all the taboos. Nothing was beyond his bold imaginings – Amazonian women wearing chains And they are very unique, because not to my knowledge and dog collars, models in has anyone ever photographed their spouse or lover on “I have become more wheelchairs and neck braces, the death bed.” aggressive and assertive women with saddles on Not only that, but somehow she also thought to cut their backs ... “I had found out earlier that I did not function well in the studio, that my imagination needed the reality of the outdoors.” Helmut Hemut Newton Forty-five photographs, three boxes, one portfolio: the selection of images entitled Private Property forms an anthology of works by the famous fashion and portrait photographer Hemut Newton. The works brought together under this title were shot between 1972 and Newton 1983 and reflect a sense of style distinctive to the development of fashion photography in the decades to follow. The three boxes contain fifteen photographs each and the Suites are numbered I, II, and III. Newton’s emphasis in this portfolio lies on his areas of interest during his most productive years, a rich assortment of fashion and portrait photography Private Property addressing eroticism, elegance, luxury and—most elementarily—his legendarily fierce and hard-edged women. Helmut Newton, born in 1920 as Helmut Neustädter, the son of a Jewish factory owner, Maude Joanna Hürlimann grew up in the Schöneberg district of Berlin. After an apprenticeship in the studio of the German portrait and fashion photographer Else Simon, also known as Yva, Newton had to leave Germany in 1938 and fled from emerging National Socialism and the extensive powers of the Nazi regime.1 Newton reached Singapore via China, with little money and only two cameras in his luggage. After a two years’ stay, he emigrated to Australia, where he stayed for several years and met his future wife June Browne, professionally known as June Brunell and later—as a photographer—as Alice Springs.

10/12/2015 Is Terry Richardson an Artist or a Predator? The Cut nymag.com/thecut/ June 15, 2014 8:00 p.m. Is Terry Richardson an Artist or a Predator? By Benjamin Wallace Photo: Cass Bird/New York Magazine Terry Richardson, displaced from his old photography studio on the Bowery by a highend fitness chain, was at his new space, an unadorned floorthrough loft down the street. Wood floor, tin ceiling, brick walls interrupted by white swaths of Sheetrock. Four employees sat working quietly on Macs. Pandora was tuned to Elvis Presley Radio. “It’s insane, the internet,” Richardson was saying. “Totally craziness. Like a little cancer. People can just do whatever they want, say whatever they want, be totally anonymous. It’s totally out of control.” He was sitting on a couch near the windows, wearing the getup that has made him the most physically recognizable photographer working today: widow’s peak, friendly muttonchops, oversize black plastic glasses, Converse sneakers, jeans, untucked plaid shirt, necklace with a cross, Star of David, and Narcotics Anonymous medallion. It was late April. The day was cool, so he’d added a hoodie. All that was missing was the toothy smile and thumbsup gesture present in most pictures of him. Four days earlier, an English model named Emma Appleton had tweeted a screenshot of what appeared to be a Facebook message from Richardson: “if I can fuck you i will book you in ny for a.shoot for Vogue.” The message was clearly an i mpersonation (Richardson does not have a personal Facebook account, and he hadn’t worked for American Vogue in four years), and another photographer might have ignored the incident.

Twenty years ago in 1999, TASCHEN published its first monumental art book: Helmut Newton’s SUMO. It came out on the market in the exceptionally large format of 70 x 50 cm, with a large print run, all personally signed by the photographer, and was delivered with a metal stand designed by Philippe Starck. Later, a copy of SUMO that had been signed by numerous celebrities at a charity auction would become the most expensive book of the 20th century. Ten years ago in 2009, the Helmut Newton Foundation staged an unusual yet compelling exhibition dedicated to this legendary publication: all 464 pages of the book hung framed on the wall, side by side, in three rows one above the other. Exhibition visitors were literally able to see everything at once. This made it possible for them to draw immediate comparisons between more than 400 iconic images by Helmut Newton, from the genres of fashion, portraiture, and nudes in black-and-white and colour.

Tightening Their Belts: UEEN Fashion Firms Cut Back To Get Lean and Mean By WWD Staff The fashion industry has suddenly gone on a serious diet. Plunging stock markets, a recession and a complete conk-out of the consumer spending engine that fueled the growth in the U.S. economy for more than a decade have fashion retailers and manufacturers taking a hard look at their organizations and cutting back wherever they can. With few signs of economic hope until at least late 2009, if not 2010, firms are moving to batten down the hatches and prepare for the worst. As a result, fashion companies are looking at every expense they can to determine whether it’s justified. Town cars? Out. First-class air travel? Out. Expensive hotels in luxe foreign lands? Out. Staff Christmas parties? In most cases, out. See Apparel, Page10 PHOTO BY KYLE ERICKSEN; MODEL: HOLLAND STEVENS/MAJOR; HAIR BY RYAN TANIGUCHI; MAKEUP BY MIZU FOR SUSAN PRICE; STYLED BY BOBBI
