Twenty years ago in 1999, TASCHEN published its first monumental art book: Helmut Newton’s SUMO. It came out on the market in the exceptionally large format of 70 x 50 cm, with a large print run, all personally signed by the photographer, and was delivered with a metal stand designed by Philippe Starck. Later, a copy of SUMO that had been signed by numerous celebrities at a charity auction would become the most expensive book of the 20th century. Ten years ago in 2009, the Helmut Newton Foundation staged an unusual yet compelling exhibition dedicated to this legendary publication: all 464 pages of the book hung framed on the wall, side by side, in three rows one above the other. Exhibition visitors were literally able to see everything at once. This made it possible for them to draw immediate comparisons between more than 400 iconic images by Helmut Newton, from the genres of fashion, portraiture, and nudes in black-and-white and colour. -

Opening on Saturday, June 29, 2013, this is the first exhibition of Helmut Newton’s work outside of gallery shows in Los Angeles, his long-time winter residence. Images from Newton’s first three books – White Women, Sleepless Nights and Big Nudes – will be on view through September 8, 2013. The exhibition was originally organized by Manfred Heiting for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. “Helmut Newton is one of the most powerful and influential photographers of the past century – the place where art and fashion and subversion and aspiration all collide. If Newton’s work was controversial, I believe it’s because he expressed the contradictions within all of us, and particularly within the women he photographed so beautifully: empowerment mixed with vulnerability, sensuality tempered by depravity. Newton deepened our understanding of changing gender roles, of the ways in which beauty creates its own kind of power and corruption. On top of that, his compositions were brilliantly precise, cinematic in their scope and in their storytelling,” says Wallis Annenberg, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation. The 100-plus photographs were made specifically for the exhibition and are large-scale— some reaching six feet in size. -

FOREIGN INFLUENCES IN AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHY 1930-80 A lecture delivered at APSCON, Canberra Robert Deane, Honorary Researcher Department of Photography National Gallery of Australia 10TH OCTOBER 2000 Given the time at our disposal it is possible only to skim the surface of this challenging topic, looking at a selected range of areas and trying to assess their impact on Australian photography at its widest ambit. Film, photographic publications, exhibitions, photographers both immigrant and emigrant, and world politics all have their part to play in this examination. It is perhaps useful to set out some caveats before commencing on this topic. As an undergraduate student of Cypriot archaeology many years ago, I learned, through the none- too quiet insistence of Professor James Stewart, that the inhabitants of Cyprus did not go to bed one night in Early Bronze I and awake the next morning to find it was Early Bronze II. Indeed he insisted that, apart from the odd cataclysmic earthquake, artistic styles have never changed abruptly in either place or time anywhere. I was, and remain, a dutiful student and thus do not subscribe to any notion that there was any orderly progression in photography from Pre-Raphaelites through Pictorialists etc to whatever post-modern “ism” is the “in” thing with critics today. Photographers, it seems to me, are not only constantly seeking to break new ground in the way they perceive and present the world but they are constantly revisiting the styles, techniques and processes of the past to assist them in that challenge. If one sought a simple example for this, those of you who visit the National Gallery will be able to compare Dupain’s superb Madonna-like portrait from New Guinea made during the war with the great iconic Sunbather made some years earlier. -

Modelling Affective Labour: On Terry Richardson’s Photography Benjamin Halligan Abstract: Photographer Terry Richardson works in a digital aesthetic vernacular that looks more to underground hardcore pornography of yesteryear than traditions associated with the institutionalisation of erotica, as associated with Playboy. And yet his images, in Kibosh and Terryworld, anticipate the contemporary public recalibration of ideas of intimacy as associated with Social Media, tally with contested ideas of the sexualisation of female empowerment as associated with contested elements of Third Wave Feminism, and can be read as a contemporary phase of Antonio Negri’s theory of art and immaterial labour in their evidencing of the affective labour on the part of the photographer himself. This critical commentary, the first such academic writing on Richardson, explores his work in these contexts, and considers Richardson’s return to the figure (over abstraction) as evidencing and exploring of the nature of work, and the nascent eroticisation of working relations, under Western neoliberal regimes.
