To analyse in detail the pollination food web of the phrygana, the vegetation and the pollinator fauna of a phryganic ecosystem near Athens has been continuously monitored during a period of fifty months, April, 1983 - May, 1987 (Petanidou, 1991). The study site, at Dafni, approx. 10 km W of the centre of Athens, was a 30 ha part of the Diomedes Botanical Garden of the University of Athens; see Petanidou & Ellis (submitted) for more details. The number of pollinator species amounted to 666, which is the highest pollinator alpha diversity recorded so far for any ecosystem. A large proportion of the fauna (262 species) consisted of bees. This underlines the uniqueness and high conservation value of the phrygana as such. Two species, viz. the Symphyta Macrophya teutona and Tenthredo zona are new to the fauna of Greece (P.

Hochschule Rhein-Waal Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences Faculty of Communication and Environment Biodiversity changes in vegetation and insects following the creation of a wildflower strip A Case Study Bachelor Thesis by Johanna Marquardt Hochschule Rhein-Waal Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences Faculty of Communication and Environment Biodiversity changes in vegetation and insects following the creation of a wildflower strip A Case Study A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree of Bachelor of Science In Environment and Energy by Johanna Marquardt Matriculation Number: 23048 Supervised by Prof. Dr. Daniela Lud Prof. Dr. Petra Blitgen-Heinecke Submission Date: 22.02.2021 Abstract With the Global Climate Change, the loss of biodiversity is one of the most current and biggest crises of today and the future. The loss i.e., the decrease of biodiversity, does not only have negative effects on vegetation and animals, but also on humans. If nature is doing well, people are doing well. In order to counteract the loss, this bachelor thesis attempts to increase plant and insect biodiversity at a specific location with insect-friendly seed mixtures and by measuring the change using comparison areas. Accordingly, the two research questions were addressed: (1) "How does plant-biodiversity change in the backyard and front yard on the seed mixture plot compared to plant-biodiversity in the backyard and front yard next to the seed mixture plot?" and (2) "How does insect-biodiversity change in the backyard and front yard on the seed mixture plot compared to insect-biodiversity in the backyard and front yard next to the seed mixture plot?" To answer these research questions and to obtain more suitable data, a wildflower strip was established in the backyard and one in the front yard, each with an adjacent reference field, to ensure equal environmental conditions and to detect changes in flora and fauna.

Fourteen species are recorded the first time for the province. The analyses of 23,420 data records from 2,684 sampling locations revealed a total of 691 Heteroptera species for the province of Styria, which is 76 % of the species known to occur in Austria. Within Austria, eight species are currently known only from Styria. 68 % of the species are considered of least concern including eleven not evaluated non-indigenous species. This means that 32 % are considered endangered to various degrees: 34 species (5 %) are considered “regionally extinct”, most of them are xerothermophilic species of open lands. 30 species (4 %) are considered “critically endangered”, 46 species (7 %) “endangered”, and 56 species (8 %) “vulnerable”. 64 species (9 %) were considered “data deficient” due to unclear taxonomy or lack of data. Percentages of red list species are particularly high in bogs and wetlands, wet and dry extensive grasslands, and running waters due to habitat loss, degradation and isolation.

In the biotopes examined 118 species of terrestrial Heteroptera have been found up to now, which offered a rather good picture of the biogeography of the zone. Most species are very widespread (Palaearctic, Eurosibiric, Euromediterraneo-turanic, Euromediterranean and Mediterranean species). Especially interesting are the Eurosibiric species typical of cold climates, which in Sicily have found a suitable refuge on the Nebrodi, at the higher levels, and the more tipically Mediterranean species: these two groups characterize the hemiptero-fauna of the Nebrodi. Among the Eurosibiric species Ceratocombus coleoptratus Zeit, is particularly interesting since it represents the first record in Sicily of a member of the family Ceratocombidae. • New Records of Terrestrial Bugs from the Maltese Islands with an Updated List of Maltese Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera)
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by OAR@UM BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2010) Vol. 3 : 19-39 New records of terrestrial bugs from the Maltese Islands with an updated list of Maltese Heteroptera (Insecta: Hemiptera) David CUESTA SEGURA1, Manuel BAENA RUÍZ2 & David MIFSUD3 ABSTRACT. Thirty-four species of Heteroptera were found from the Maltese islands during a sampling period of a week in April of 2009. Of these, seven represent new records for this territory and include the seed bugs Artheneis foveolata, Emblethis duplicatus, Engistus boops boops and Oxycarenus hyalinipennis and the plant bugs Megalodactylus macularubra, Mimocoris sp. and Phytocoris sp. The integration of the records from the last Catalogue of Maltese Heteroptera, the Catalogue of the Heteroptera of the Palaeartic Region and the present data raised the heteroptera known from the Maltese islands to 223 species accommodated in 161 genera and 26 families. KEY WORDS. Malta, true bugs, new records, updated list. INTRODUCTION Probably the earliest mention of Maltese Heteroptera was due to DALLAS (1852), who recorded four species from Malta, as clearly indicated in Schembri’s catalogue of Maltese Heteroptera (1993) which includes most citations relevant to Maltese Heteroptera. The number of Heteroptera species for Malta increased slowly, and more than a hundred years later, TAMANINI (1966) recorded 67 species belonging to 16 families. DE LUCCA (1969) added some further species and RIEGER (1986) provided information on 35 additional new records for Malta. SCHEMBRI (1993) also described the major Maltese habitat types and provided additional new records, listing a total of 209 taxa (refer to discussion) accommodated in 23 families.
