Proceedings of the United States National Museum SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION • WASHINGTON, D.C. Volume 112 I960 Number 3431 LACE-BUG GENERA OF THE WORLD (HEMIPTERA: TINGIDAE) « By Carl J. Drake and Florence A. Ruhoff Introduction A treatise of the generic names of the family Tingidae from a global standpoint embodies problems similar to those frequently encountered in corresponding studies in other animal groups. The more im- portant criteria, including such basic desiderata as fixation of type species, synonyms, priority, and dates of technical publications implicate questions concomitant with recent trends toward the clarification and stabilization of zoological nomenclature. Zoogeography, predicated and authenticated on the generic level by the distribution of genera and species, is portrayed here by means of tables, charts, and maps of the tingifauna of the world. This visual pattern of distribution helps one to form a more vivid concept of the family and its hierarchic levels of subfamilies and genera. To a limited extent the data indicate distributional concentrations and probable centers of evolution and dispersal paths of genera. The phylogenetic relationship of genera is not discussed. The present treatise recognizes 216 genera (plus 79 synonyms, homonyms, and emendations) of the Tingidae of the world and gives 1 Research for this paper was supported In part by the National Science Foundation, grant No. 4095. 2 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 112 the figure of 1,767 as the approximate number of species now recog- nized. These figures, collated with similar categories in Lethierry and Severin (1896), show that there has been an increase of many genera and hundreds of species of Tingidae during the past three- quarters of a century.

  • Area 3 Habitat Assessments and Pollinator Surveys October
Inspiring change for Important Invertebrate Areas in the UK Area 3 habitat assessments and pollinator surveys 11th September 2014 Susan Thompson - Grants & Trusts Officer October 2016 (Updated April 2017) Jamie Robins Saving the small things that run the planet Executive Summary Buglife Services were commissioned by Kier Group Ltd in July 2016 to undertake a series of baseline habitat surveys within the Area 3 network, to identify sites where improvements for pollinators could be implemented. These results were then used to identify ten sites with the highest potential and deliverability, using a ranking exercise, in addition to a Kier owned depot. Buglife Services undertook more detailed habitat assessments and pollinator surveys during brief site visits in August 2016. Of the 11 sites surveyed, a total of 104 pollinator species were recorded. This comprised 18 Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), 33 Hoverflies, 18 other Diptera (true flies), 14 bees, 6 other hymenoptera and 11 other minor pollinators (e.g. true bugs and beetles). A further 38 incidental (non-pollinator) species were also recorded. These results and habitat assessments were used to provide management suggestions to enhance the value of these sites for pollinators. Where possible suggestions aimed to benefit key species recorded during site surveys, such as the Chalk hill blue butterfly (Polyommatus coridon), the Section 41 priority species Straw belle moth (Aspitates gilvaria) and the scarce (Nb) wasp Microdynerus exilis. Finally, recommendations for future survey and monitoring were provided, aiming to inform Kier of the progression of habitat improvements for pollinators and advise future management. Introduction There has been a growing interest in managing road verges and other transport features more sensitively for biodiversity.

Among the factors that cause biodiversity loss, human activity in the sensitive ecosystem of forests can be easily monitored. The research carried out during 2016 focused on the study of Heteroptera, superfamily Pentatomoidea fauna in the Baneasa forest, where the natural environment was modified by human intervention through both recreational activity and constructions, insect collection being made by mowing with the entomological net, determining the structure of the systematic groups of the Heteroptera identified in the Baneasa forest, and a characterization of the zoogeographical origin of the species. In the Baneasa forest, the area hardly affected by the human activity, but less researched in terms of Heteroptera fauna, 52 species of Pentatomoidea were found, in our opinion 12 seem to originate from Manchurian refuge Usuric subcenter, 37 of the Mediterranean arboreal refuge, 2 come from the Caucasian arboreal refuge and one species could originate from the eremial Aralo-Caspic refuge (Turanic). Key words: Heteroptera-Pentatomoidea, biodiversity, forest Băneasa Rezumat. Printre factorii ce determină pierderi în cadrul biodiversitatii, activitatea omului

  • ARTHROPODA Subphylum Hexapoda Protura, Springtails, Diplura, and Insects
NINE Phylum ARTHROPODA SUBPHYLUM HEXAPODA Protura, springtails, Diplura, and insects ROD P. MACFARLANE, PETER A. MADDISON, IAN G. ANDREW, JOCELYN A. BERRY, PETER M. JOHNS, ROBERT J. B. TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).
