Gattung Brachycoleus F , 1858

251 CHROMOSOME NUMBERS OF SOME NORTH AMERICAN MIRIDS (HETEROPTERA: MIRIDAE) A. E. AKINGBOHUNGBE Department of Plant Science University of Ife lie-Ife, Nigeria Data are presented on the chromosome numbers (2n) of some eighty species of Miridae. The new information is combined with existing data on some Palearctic and Ethiopian species and discussed. From it, it is suggested that continued reference to 2n - 32A + X + Y as basic mirid karyotype should be avoided and that contrary to earlier suggestions, agmatoploidy rather than poly- ploidy is a more probable mechanism of numerical chromosomal change. Introduction Leston (1957) and Southwood and Leston (1959) gave an account of the available information on chromosome numbers in the Miridae. These works pro- vided the first indication that the subfamilies may show some modalities that might be useful in phylogenetic analysis in the family. Kumar (1971) also gave an ac- count of the karyotype in some six West African cocoa bryocorines. In the present paper, data will be provided on 80 North American mirids, raising to about 131, the number of mirids for which the chromosome numbers are known. Materials and Methods Adult males were collected during the summer of 1970-1972 in Wisconsin and dissected soon after in 0.6% saline solution. The dissected testes were preserved in 3 parts isopropanol: 1 part glacial acetic acid and stored in a referigerator until ready for squashing. Testis squashes were made using Belling's iron-acetocarmine tech- nique as reviewed by Smith (1943) and slides were ringed with either Bennett's zut or Sanford's rubber cement. -

A Super‐Network Approach to the Complexity of Nature: Crossing Scale and Habitat Borders
A super‐network approach to the complexity of nature: Crossing scale and habitat borders M. Sc. Thesis by Lea Kromann‐Gallop Institute of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Ny Munkegade 114, DK‐8000 Aarhus C, Denmark July 2011 For correspondence: e‐mail [email protected]/[email protected] TABLE OF CONTENT Report: 2 Title: A super-network approach to the complexity of nature: Crossing scale and habitat borders Abstract: 2 Keywords: 2 Introduction: 3 Material and Methods: 7 Results: 18 Discussion: 31 Conclusion: 42 Acknowledgements: 43 References: 43 Appendix 1: 47 Manuscript to article: Annex 1 Title: An ecological super-network: Structure, linkage, constraints and robustness. 1 Abstract: In most ecological network studies there is a focus on just one interaction type within one kind of habitat when studying the stability, robustness, build up and break down of a system in nature. Studying one interaction networks dose not give a thorough understanding of how real systems in nature are constructed. To come closer to a more comprehensive understanding of a real world system the network study in this report is scaled up to a super network including three bipartite networks (plant- pollinator, plant-herbivore and plant-pathogen networks). Furthermore, the network is crossing a habitat border to illustrate that networks span different habitats. The study was done in Moesgaard Have in Denmark with a total of 697 interactions between plants and their interaction partners. The super network was analysed for a list of network parameters including nestedness and degree distribution. It was analysed for modularity and the turnover rates of species and their links between plots were calculated. -

Faunistic research of true bugs (Heteroptera) in the Kokořínsko Protected Landsape Area (PLA) received only little attention in the past (data on only 22 species were published). Here, we summarize both published and comprehensive recent faunistic data on the true bugs occurring in the PLA. The heteropteran fauna of the PLA Kokořínsko now comprises 305 species (35.6% of species occurring in the Czech Republic) and is characterized by the occurrence of rare species living in well preserved xerothermic or wetland habitats. The observed species richness is slightly higher than that of similarly studied protected areas in the Czech Republic. Twenty one species (6.9% of recorded species richness) is included in the Redlist of the Czech Heteroptera and those species prefer habitats already protected in natural reserves. ▒ Key words: faunistics, Heteroptera, Czech Republic, Bohemia, true bugs, nature conservation 267 BOHEMIA CENTRALIS 27 Úvod a historie výzkumu Přestože více či méně systematický faunistický výzkum ploštic v Čechách započal už v 70.
