251 CHROMOSOME NUMBERS OF SOME NORTH AMERICAN MIRIDS (HETEROPTERA: MIRIDAE) A. E. AKINGBOHUNGBE Department of Plant Science University of Ife lie-Ife, Nigeria Data are presented on the chromosome numbers (2n) of some eighty species of Miridae. The new information is combined with existing data on some Palearctic and Ethiopian species and discussed. From it, it is suggested that continued reference to 2n - 32A + X + Y as basic mirid karyotype should be avoided and that contrary to earlier suggestions, agmatoploidy rather than poly- ploidy is a more probable mechanism of numerical chromosomal change. Introduction Leston (1957) and Southwood and Leston (1959) gave an account of the available information on chromosome numbers in the Miridae. These works pro- vided the first indication that the subfamilies may show some modalities that might be useful in phylogenetic analysis in the family. Kumar (1971) also gave an ac- count of the karyotype in some six West African cocoa bryocorines. In the present paper, data will be provided on 80 North American mirids, raising to about 131, the number of mirids for which the chromosome numbers are known. Materials and Methods Adult males were collected during the summer of 1970-1972 in Wisconsin and dissected soon after in 0.6% saline solution. The dissected testes were preserved in 3 parts isopropanol: 1 part glacial acetic acid and stored in a referigerator until ready for squashing. Testis squashes were made using Belling's iron-acetocarmine tech- nique as reviewed by Smith (1943) and slides were ringed with either Bennett's zut or Sanford's rubber cement. -

Specimens of this species were collected in the years 2009-2018 at several sites located in three zoogeographic regions: Mazowiecka Lowland, Trzebnickie Hills and Wielkopolsko- Kujawska Lowland. In addition, new sites for 9 other species of Deraeocorinae are given. Identifying features of Deraeocoris flavilinea (A. COSTA, 1862) as well as information on distribution of Bothynotus pilosus (BOHEMAN, 1852) are discussed. Key words: biodiversity, distribution, faunistics, new records, plant bugs, true bugs. By its rarity in the Catalan fauna, the mirid Deraeocoris (D.) schach (Fabricius, 1781) and the pentatomid Sciocoris (N.) maculatus Fieber, 1851 are interesting species. Plus being rare species, the mirid Macrotylus (A.) solitarius (Meyer-Dür, 1843) and the pentatomid Sciocoris (S.) umbrinus (Wolff, 1804) are new records for the Natural Park. The mirids Alloetomus germanicus Wagner, 1939 and Amblytylus brevicollis Fieber, 1858, and the pentatomid Eysarcoris aeneus (Scopoli, 1763) are new contributions for the Park checklist. The Heteropteran richness of Can Coll suggests them as study group for the environmental education goals of this School of Nature. To analyse in detail the pollination food web of the phrygana, the vegetation and the pollinator fauna of a phryganic ecosystem near Athens has been continuously monitored during a period of fifty months, April, 1983 - May, 1987 (Petanidou, 1991). The study site, at Dafni, approx. 10 km W of the centre of Athens, was a 30 ha part of the Diomedes Botanical Garden of the University of Athens; see Petanidou & Ellis (submitted) for more details. The number of pollinator species amounted to 666, which is the highest pollinator alpha diversity recorded so far for any ecosystem. A large proportion of the fauna (262 species) consisted of bees. Managed systems harvested at intermediate time-scales have advantages over annual short-cycled systems in maintaining top-down control of insect herbivores, and the flexible harvest regimes in these systems provide opportunities for habitat management that can stabi- lize predator–prey population dynamics across harvests – resulting in reduced risk of pest outbreaks. 2. In a large-scale field experiment, we explored whether retaining refuges, that is preserving parts of the stand to reduce predator mortality, could reduce the risk of pest insect outbreaks in willow short-rotation coppice. Population densities of three omnivorous predator species and three outbreaking herbivorous leaf beetle species were monitored over four years after coppice (stem harvest) in eight stands with refuges (treatment) and eight stands without refuges (control). Predation pressure was estimated in years three and four. 3. Contrary to our predictions, leaf beetle densities were higher in stands with refuges and predator densities were higher in stands without refuges. Leaf beetle egg mortality increased with total predator density, but did not differ between stands with and without refuges. 4. These unexpected results can be attributed to interactions between dispersal and patch age. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The newly discovered plant bug Perissobasis heroni is described from specimens collected in Campos Altos city, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, on coffee (Coffea arabica). It was found with a rich arthropod fauna associated with coffee foliage. A diagnosis, description, photographs of the adult male, and selected structures and illustrations of male genitalia are provided to facilitate recognition. A key to species of Perissobasis is also included. Key words: Coffea arabica crop, Miridae, Predator, Brazil, Perissobasis Introduction The monotypic genus Perissobasis was described by Reuter (1892) to include the species P. aurora Reuter, type species of the genus, collected by M. F. Simon from Venezuela (Carvalho 1982). This Neotropical genus now contains nine species, seven of them occurring in South America, with only two found in Central America: P. aurora Reuter recorded from Costa Rica and P. panamensis Carvalho from Panama (Schuh 1995). Carvalho (1982) reviewed the literature, diagnosed the genus, and provided a key for the species. -
