Chapter30 Two JERUSALEM 1948 The Growth of the Western Communities, 1917-19481 Rochelle Davis ntroduction I When the British occupied Jerusalem at the end of 1917, they found a city wasted by the hardships and deprivations of World War I. When they left the city in the spring of 1948, they relinquished what had become a vibrant and cosmopolitan city to be ravaged and divided in the 1948 war over Palestine. This chapter will address the social, physical, economic, and demographic transformations taking place in the intervening thirty years. A realistic and complex assessment of the British role in the growth of the city would consider how the British administration and regulations shaped the development of a city in which there were vastly different interests, desires, goals, wealth, languages, and living styles. However, the majority of scholarly work focuses on British achievements in providing a stable and substantial water supply to the city, the sanitation network, road work, etc., or alternatively, the changes brought to the city by the European Jewish immigrants. But to focus entirely on how these improvements molded the city is unfortunate. The indigenous members of the Jerusalem community were active and creative participants in the changes and developments going on around them, contributing greatly to their own lives and futures. It is how Arab, Greek, and Armenian Jerusalemites lived their lives and the environments they created in the New City that will be the focus of this chapter.2 With this view in mind, this chapter will attempt to elucidate some of the socio- economic features that characterized life in twentieth-century Arab Jerusalem the different suburbs of the New City, education, and social life, among other thingsto try and create a picture of living in this cosmopolitan and rapidly growing city. -

It consists of a note on the sources and seven chapters. The first chapter is a biographical review of al-Hakim's person. It introduces a history of his birth, childhood, succession to the Caliphate, his education and private life and it examines the contradiction in the sources concerning his character. Chapter II discusses the problems which al-Hakim inherited from the previous rule and examines their impact on the political life of his State. Chapter III introduces the administration of the internal affairs of the State. -

SMARANDACHE a Syrian gentleman, warriorpoet, Muslim amir, and fāris (488–584/1095–1188)—described variously as uignorancesaMa Iofbn the Munq FrankishIdh language in his Kitab al-iʿtibar (The Book of Learning (knight)—professes by Example), when recounting one of his childhood memories. Born to the Arab dynasty of the Banu Munqidh, who ruled the castle and hinterland of Shayzar on the Aṣi (or Orontes) River, Usama had grown up in close proximity to the Frankish Principality of Antioch. In the decade following the First Crusade (488–492/1095–1099), the Banu Munqidh and their Frankish neighbours engaged begun his military training. Recalling that time decades later, he remembers that in periodic raids and skirmishes. By that time, Usama was a youth and might have Tancred, the Christian ruler of Antioch (d. 506/1112), had granted a guarantee unfortunate young cavalier was actually heading into a trap that cost him his right of safe-conduct to a skilled horseman from Shayzar, a man named Hasanun. (The Ifranjī eye, but he had trusted in Tancred’s good will.) An impressive amount of recent critical work has dealt with the philosophic element in Voltaire's tragedies. His plays have been labelled a theatre of involvement and a theatre of ideas; they have been examined from the standpoint of propaganda and as tragedyl. However,the focus of such studies has been primarily on Voltaire's message or on the meaning ofthe plays, rather than on the dramatic structure he created to convey his philosophic concerns. E-ISSN 2281-4612 Academic Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies Vol 2 No 3 ISSN 2281-3993 MCSER Publishing, Rome-Italy November 2013 Goethe and his Encounter with Voltaire in Moments of Islamic and Orientalist Discourse Edvin Cami University “Aleksandër Moisiu”, Durrës E-mail: [email protected] Doi:10.5901/ajis.2013.v2n3p547 Abstract Goethe’s views on the Orient and Islam constitute a very interesting phenomenon in the context of the Western society of 18th and 19th centuries. While Goethe also was part of the anticlericalism established with the Enlightenment, other than Voltaire, rather than exerting any criticism to religion in itself, he tries to track and recognize the common roots and values of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Especially in his poetical work West-östlicher Divan (West-eastern Divan), and through his concept of Weltliteratur, he shows a completely different imagology of the Orient compared to the Western society of his time. Introduction: Goethe and his “Encounter” with Voltaire The “encounter” of Goethe with Voltaire occurred in a literary reality, as the former translated into German the latter’s abovementioned dramatic work Le fanatisme ou Mahomet le prophète. Goethe’s surprisingly positive opinion on Islam was a well known reality to many even in his time, including the duke Carl August, who commissioned him to translate Voltaire’s work. The duke was conscious that Goethe – whom he jovially called “Meccanus” due to the poet’s sympathy for Islam and the Orient – had to work “against his own nature” for the translation of Le fanatisme. -

ABD AL-RAHMAN JAMI: “NAQSHBANDI SUFI, PERSIAN POET A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Farah Fatima Golparvaran Shadchehr, M.A. The Ohio State University 2008 Approved by Professor Stephen Dale, Advisor Professor Dick Davis Professor Joseph Zeidan ____________________ Advisor Graduate Program in History Copyright by Farah Shadchehr 2008 ABSTRACT The era of the Timurids, the dynasty that ruled Transoxiana, Iran, and Afghanistan from 1370 to 1506 had a profound cultural and artistic impact on the history of Central Asia, the Ottoman Empire, and Mughal India in the early modern era. While Timurid fine art such as miniature painting has been extensively studied, the literary production of the era has not been fully explored. Abd al-Rahman Jami (817/1414- 898/1492), the most renowned poet of the Timurids, is among those Timurid poets who have not been methodically studied in Iran and the West. Although, Jami was recognized by his contemporaries as a major authority in several disciplines, such as science, philosophy, astronomy, music, art, and most important of all poetry, he has yet not been entirely acknowledged in the post Timurid era. This dissertation highlights the significant contribution of Jami, the great poet and Sufi thinker of the fifteenth century, who is regarded as the last great classical poet of Persian literature. It discusses his influence on Persian literature, his central role in the Naqshbandi Order, and his input in clarifying Ibn Arabi's thought. Jami spent most of his life in Herat, the main center for artistic ability and aptitude in the fifteenth century; the city where Jami grew up, studied, flourished and produced a variety of prose and poetry.
