Ah me! how hard a thing it is to say What was this forest savage, rough, and stern, Which in the very thought renews the fear. So bitter is it, death is little more; But of the good to treat, which there I found, Speak will I of the other things I saw there. I cannot well repeat how there I entered, So full was I of slumber at the moment In which I had abandoned the true way. But after I had reached a mountain’s foot, 3 At that point where the valley terminated, 4 Which had with consternation pierced my heart, Upward I looked, and I beheld its shoulders 1The action of the poem begins on Good Friday of the year 1300, at which time Dante, who was born in 1265, had reached the middle of the Scriptual threescore years and ten. It ends on the first Sunday after Easter, making in all ten days. 2The dark forest of human life, with its passions, vices, and perplexities of all kinds; politically the state of Florence with its fractions Guelf and Ghibelline. 3Bunyan, in his Pilgrim’s Progress, which is a kind of Divine Comedy in prose, says: “I beheld then that they all went on till they came to the foot of the hill Difficulty... But the narrow way lay right up the hill, and the name of the going up the side of the hill is called Difficulty... They went then till they came to the Delectable Mountains, which mountains belong to the Lord of that hill of which we have spoken before.” 4Bunyan, Pilgrim’s Progress – “But now in this valley of Humiliation poor Christian was hard put to it; for he had gone but a little way before he spied a foul fiend coming over the field to meet him; his name is Apollyon. Then did Christian begin to be afraid, and to cast in his mind whether to go back or stand his ground. ...Now at the end of this valley was another, called the valley of the Shadow of Death; and Christian must needs go through it, because the way to the Celestial City lay through the midst of it.” 1 2 http://www.paskvil.com/ Vested already with that planet’s rays 5 Which leadeth others right by every road. And never moved she from before my face, Nay, rather did impede so much my way, That many times I to return had turned. 11 The time was the beginning of the morning, And up the sun was mounting with those stars 12 That with him were, what time the Love Divine 5The sun, with all its symbolical meanings. This is the morning of Good Friday. In the Ptolemaic system the sun was one of the planets. 6The deep mountain tarn of his heart, dark with its own depth, and the shadows hanging over it. 7Jeremiah ii. 6: “That led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt.” In his note upon this passage Mr. Wright quotes Spenser’s lines, Faerie Queene, I. v. 31, – “there creature never passed That back returned without heavenly grace.” 8Climbing the hillside slowly, so that he rests longest on the foot that is lowest. 9Jeremiah v. 6: “Wherefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, a wolf of the evening shall spoil them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: every one that goeth out thence shall be torn in pieces.” 10Wordly Pleasure; and politically Florence, with its factions of Bianchi and Neri. 11Pi`uvolte volto. A poet was I, and I sang that just Son of Anchises, who came forth from Troy, After that Ilion the superb was burned But thou, why goest thou back to such annoyance? Why climb’st thou not the Mount Delectable Which is the source and cause of every joy?” Now, art thou that Virgilius and that fountain 19 16Dante as a Ghibelline and Imperialist is in opposition to the Guelfs, Pope Boniface VIII., and the King of France, Philip the Fair, and is banished from Florence, out of the sunshine, and into “the dry wind that blows from dolorous poverty.” Cato speaks of the “silent moon” in De Re Rustica, XXIV., Evehito luna silenti; and XL., Vites inseri luna silenti. Also Pliny, XVI. 39, has Silens luna; and Milton, in Samson Agonistes, “Silent as the moon.” 17The long neglect of classic studies in Italy before Dante’s time.

The film is divided into three sections: “Public” opens with a wide aerial shot of The Museum of Modern Art’s Sculpture Garden and visitors walking about; “Party,” filmed in the basement of Judson Memorial Church, features the artists Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Robert Rauschenberg, and Steve Paxton dancing the twist and other social dances; and “Private” shows the dancer Judith Dunn warming up and rehearsing in her loft studio, accompanied by an atonal vocal score. The three “dances” encompass the range of movement employed by the artists, musicians, and choreographers associated with Judson Dance Theater. With its overlaid exposures, calibrated framing, and pairing of distinct actions, Friedman’s film captures the group’s feverish spirit. WORKSHOPS In the late 1950s and early 1960s, three educational sites were formative for the group of artists who would go on to establish Judson Dance Theater. Through inexpensive workshops and composition classes, these artists explored and developed new approaches to art making that emphasized mutual aid and art’s relationship to its surroundings. The choreographer Anna Halprin used improvisation and simple tasks to encourage her students “to deal with ourselves as people, not dancers.” Her classes took place at her home outside San Francisco, on her Dance Deck, an open-air wood platform surrounded by redwood trees that she prompted her students to use as inspiration. In New York, near Judson Memorial Church, the ballet dancer James Waring taught a class in composition that brought together different elements of a theatrical performance, much like a collage.

To the men of t<Hiay the half-century just passed seems to be one of the most wonderful eras in the world's history. Men of former generations have had this same feeling as they looked back over the events of their age. Writing of the first fifty years of the thirteenth century, Matthew Paris, a contemporary, says: "All these remarkable and strange events, the like of which have never been seen or heard of, nor are found in any writings of our fathers in times past, occurred during this last half-century." In this list of wonderful events, not a single invention or mechan­ ical discovery is adduced, and from the realm of nature only a few portents are mentioned. But, for all that, those fifty years do constitute a remarkable period. It was still the age of the Crusades, whose energies were, however, fast waning. It was the age of Francis d'Assisi and Dom­ inic, and the rise of the Mendicant Orders. It was the age of some of the greater Schoolmen. It was the age of Inno­ cent II!., whose eminence no occupant of the papal chair has ever surpassed, and few have equaled. It was the age of Runnymede and the Great Charter. Much of what I write here is found in chronicles of the day, and the information presented is to the best of my knowledge true, but I have taken some liberties, in accordance with the wants of my discourse. The different and various accounts of the short and undistinguished life of Conradin of Sicily agree on very little, save for the bare facts of his case. Was he held in a palace, as one modern historian asserts, or the same stinking dungeon as his Uncle Manfred’s family? Did he sleep at night beside his beloved in an opulent bed of silk and cherry wood, or on a pile of straw listening to the cries and screams of Beatrice, Manfred’s only daughter? We will never know. What is the value, anyway, of one singular life, of a footnote to the vast encyclopedia of history? Should we care about Conradin, about his love for Frederick of Baden, his unjust and cruel death at the hands of Anjou?     2 The Muse “former poets,” and the problem of the past Past and Present in Archaic Greek Poetry “old” and “new” in pindar In this chapter, I consider the ways in which epinician poetry regards and represents the past. The past plays a complicated role in this genre. It is of great significance for the epinician project: contempo- rary athletic victories recall and invite comparison with the deeds of heroes from the distant past. But the primary and immediate function of epinician poetry is to praise contemporaries—men of the present. Because of this, a tension is set up between past and present as epinician themes. In epinician poetry, a besetting concern is that the past should not eclipse the present. Epinician poetry repeatedly emphasizes a focus on the present as part of its formal program. In Nemean 4, the poet says that typically, victors are praised in their own day, and by their peers. The poet declines to celebrate the victor’s dead uncle, a former victor at the Isthmus, because, he says, the victor’s grandfather is better qualified to do so. “For some belong to one generation, others to another; but each person hopes to speak best of what he himself has encountered” (91–92). Pindar’s odes also contain many internal references to the here- and-now aspect of epinician performance. The poet urges that it is necessary to celebrate “today” [σα µερν, O. 6.28; P. 4.1–2], and prom- ises a song “right now” [νυν , O. 11.11].
