I heard about how a group of ministers and a salesman’s organization were holding conventions in the same hotel, and the catering department had to work at top speed serving dinners to both. The salesmen were having spiked watermelon for dessert. But the chef discovered that it was being served to the ministers by mistake. “Quick!” he commanded a waiter. “Bring it back!” The waiter returned, reporting that it was too late. The ministers were already eating the liquor-spiced treat. “Do they like it?” asked the chef. “Don’t know,” replied the waiter, “but they’re putting the seeds in their pockets” (Quoted Magazine). Ministry can be wearisome enough that one might turn to such things to dull the pain, but the high mark of ministry is in following in our Lord’s footsteps. They were not, for example, interested in theology or historiography alone, but also in aesthetics.1 In other words, their focus was not directed solely on simply presenting information, but also on how the material was presented literarily. Authors would utilize many techniques in their writing such as repetition, chiasms, and typology to connect stories, to emphasize themes, and to flesh out nuanced truths. This paper will argue that Luke, in the Book of Acts, implements the aesthetic technique of allusion and typology to enrich his narrative. More specifically, this paper will seek to demonstrate Luke’s portrayal of Paul as the anti-Jonah in Acts.

    The story of Prophet Dawud (alayhi salaam) Dawud (as) defeats Jalut The story of Prophet Dawud (as) follows the story of Musa (as). From the story of Prophet Musa (as) we learned how the Banu Israel escaped from Egypt, and were left wandering in the desert around Palestine. Dawud (as) was of the people of Banu Israel. When he was still very young, he joined the army of Banu Israel who were planning to fight the people of Jerusalem so that they could enter the holy land and live there. At that time, the people of Jerusalem were a strong and battle-hardened group of people called the Philistines. The Banu Israel were scared of fighting the Philistines; they had only a few hundred soldiers on their side and the Philistine army had thousands. The leader of the Philistine army was a huge and fiercely strong man called Jalut, or Goliath. The Banu Israel were terrified when they saw Jalut’s strength and size. But Dawud (as) was incredibly brave, even though he was still so young. He stepped forward and said “I will fight Jalut.” The leader of the army said, “You are too young.” He was reluctant to let Dawud (as) fight Jalut and asked his soldiers if anyone else would volunteer. When no one else stepped forward, the leader finally agreed to let Dawud (as) fight Jalut. When Jalut saw Dawud (as) come towards him, he exclaimed “I will not fight such a young and weak boy.” Dawud (as) had no sword or spear, not even a shield.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BOOK OF JONAH BOTTOM LINE INTRODUCTION THIS BOOK CONTAINS THE BIGGEST FISH STORY OF ALL TIME. BUT IT ISN’T WHAT YOU THINK IT IS. Almost everyone has heard the story of the huge sea creature that swallowed Jonah, and about Jonah’s pitiful prayer for deliverance while inside its stomach (ch. 1-2). But the real fish story takes place in chapter 3. To understand this, consider an event that would transpire some seven centuries later in northern Israel: “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him” (Mt. 4:18-20). In this passage Jesus taught that the “fish” God is looking to catch are sinful men, and the real “fishermen” are soul winners.
